존재와 언어의 추상화

Abstract

본 논문에서는‘존재란 무엇인가?'라는 인식론적 질문들과‘존재자'에 대한 사유를 통해 ‘존재'를 인식하는 과정을 바탕으로 나의 작품에 대한 연구를 시도한다. 존재에 관련된 끝없는 물음들은 실재와 허상의 경계를 모호하게 한다. 이에‘언어'라는 매개체를 통해 존재의 의미를 구체화 시키려 한다. 우리는 문자를 통해 의미를 인식하는 과정에서 언어가 가지고 있는 인식체계에 빠져 단어 그 자체의 근본적인 의미를 놓치는 경우가 있다. 그러나 단어의 뜻을 깊이 사유하게 되면 단어의 표면적 의미 너머 그의 함축적인 의미에 집중할 수 있도록 도와준다. 본 논문에서는 이처럼 예술이‘존재'를 사유하게 하는 역할을 담당하고 있음을 다양한 인문학적인 이론을 기초로 하여 살펴보고자 한다. 본론 첫 장의‘존재를 위한 물음'은 나에게 있어 예술을 하는 행위를 정당화시키는 출발점이다. 예술가로서 나의 존재에 대한 질문을 하며 답을 얻어가는 과정이 작업으로 드러난다. 작업과정 속에 마틴 하이데거(Martin Heidegger)의 존재론에 대해 이론적으로 고찰하고, 귄터 우커(Günther Uecker)의 존재를 인식하는 사유방식이 어떻게 예술로 표현되는지 연구하려 한다. 더 나아가 존재의 순환성 속에 보여 지는 존재와 부재의 관계를 펠릭스 곤잘레스-토레스(Felix Gonzales-Torres)의 작품을 빌어 설명하고자 한다. 이러한 연구들을 기반으로 궁극적으로는 나의 작품을 통해 존재를 사유하는 방식들을 살펴볼 것이다. 본론 두 번째 장의‘존재를 위한 인식'은 언어를 매개체로 존재를 인식하는 과정이다. 언어를‘존재의 집'이라고 정의한 하이데거가 내린 존재의 정의에 대해 논의해보고, 언어는‘세계를 비추는 거울'이라고 언급한 루트비히 비트겐슈타인(Ludwig Wittgenstein)의 철학을 참고하고자한다. 또한 언어를 통해 인식되는 존재를 표현한 조셉 코수TM(Joseph Kosuth)와 에드워드 루샤(Edward Ruscha)의 작품 속에서 살펴보고자 한다. 나의 작업은 존재를 드러내고자 문자를 해체시키고, 더 나아가 분절된 의미를 해석하며, 단어 그대로의 의미를 표현하려는 시도인 것이다. 나는 작업을 통해 단어가 가지고 있는 함축적인 의미들을 발견하며 언어와 존재의 관계를 새로운 관점에서 해석한다. 마지막으로 본론의 세 번째 장의‘존재를 위한 환기'에서는 존재에 대한 사유와 언어를 통해 해석되는 나의 작품들이 어떻게 존재의 의미를 부각시키는지 고찰해 볼 것이다. 우리가 만들어 낸 언어체계를 통해, 단편적인 문자 그대로의 의미만을 인식하는 것이 실재라 할 수 없기에 결국 작업을 통해 언어의 모호함을 드러내고 존재와 언어의 관계를 재조명한다. 나는 읽혀지는 단어의 표면적 의미너머 단어를 분절 단위로 해체시켜 가독성을 잃어버리는 과정을 통해 숨겨진 함축적인 의미에 집중하여 그 속에 존재하는 감정들을 유추한다. 단어의 감정을 시각화 시키는 과정은 사적인 영역 속으로 편입되는 개별적인 것이다. 이것은 언어의 추상화를 만들어 내며 그렇게 제작된 나의 작품에 나타난 이미지의 생성과정과 그 성격을 분석해 봄으로써 나의 작업에 대하여 조금 더 심도 있는 이해를 이끌어 내고자 한다. 또한 표면적인 단어의 인식을 넘어 단어 안에 내재된 감정을 이야기 하는 나의 작품이 감상자들에게 어떻게 해석되고 의미를 가질 수 있는지 그 소통의 접점을 찾아 탐구해 볼 것이다.;In this thesis, I study my works based on the process of understanding the “existence” through speculating about epistemological questions on “what is existence? and “being.” Endless questions related to existence blur the boundary between what is real and what is illusion. Hereupon I intend to embody the meaning of existence by making use of “language” as a medium. We often fail to identify the fundamental meaning of a word itself when we get trapped in the cognitive system of language while understanding the meaning of the word. However, deep thinking of the meaning of word helps us to understand what it actually implies beneath the surface. In this thesis, I will address how art plays the role of making us to think of “existence” based on various humanities theories. “Questions concerning existence” of the first chapter of this thesis is a starting point for me to justify myself for doing art. A process of acquiring answers while questioning about my existence as an artist becomes evident in my works. I will theoretically consider Martin Heidegger’s ontology in the work process and study how Günther Uecker’s way of understanding existence is expressed in art. In addition, I will explain the relationship between existence and absence that is shown in the circularity of being through the work of Felix Gonzales-Torres. Ultimately, based on aforementioned researches, I will be examining ways of thinking of existence through my works. “Understanding of existence” of the second chapter of this thesis is a process of understanding being through language. I will discuss the definition of existence which was defined by Heidegger who stated that “Language is the house of being,” and refer to the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein who saw language as “A mirror of the world.” I will also look at works of Joseph Kosuth and Edward Ruscha who expressed existence which is understood through language. My works are my attempts to break up a word to reveal existence, interpret segmented meaning and to express the meaning of the word as it is. I find implicit meanings of the word and interpret the relationship between language and existence through my works. Lastly in “a awakening for existence” of the third chapter of this thesis, I will contemplate how my works, that are interpreted through language and thinking about existence, bring meaning of existence into relief. Because cognizing fragmentary meaning of word as it is cannot be regarded as actual being through language systems created by us, I will reveal ambiguity of language and shed new light on the relationship between existence and language through my works. I break up a word beyond surface meaning of the word being read into a segmental unit, and infer emotions that exist inside them by losing legibility and focusing on hidden implicit meanings. Process of visualizing emotions of a word is an individual matter being incorporated into a private area. This makes language become abstract and by analyzing creation process of images revealed in my works and their characteristics, I intend to help you understand more of my works. I will also explore how my works, which tell emotions that lie under the surface word, are interpreted by and have meaning for appreciators of my works.
