소통 불가의 현상과 작품을 통한 오해 유발의 가능성

Abstract

소통은 우리 사회에서 매우 긍정적인 의미로 수용되며 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화 등 다방면에 걸쳐 요구되는 개념 중 하나이다. 현대 미술의 흐름에 소통 개념의 개입과 확장이 지대한 영향을 미친 것 역시도 부정할 수 없는 사실이다. 그러나 소통의 실체가 무엇이며 그 범주를 어디까지로 보아야 할 것인지, 그리고 소통의 가능성에 대한 첨예한 인식과 반성은 실로 미약하다. 본 연구에서는 소통의 주체가 될 수 있는 하나의 개인으로서의 ‘나’를 설정한다. ‘나’는 나의 외부세계에 대하여 타자일 수밖에 없는 존재이며 나의 존재함은 그 자체만으로도 완전한 의미를 가진다. 내가 존재하는 이유는 나의 존재함 자체에 있는 것이지 타인에게 전달할 수 있는 내용이 내 안에 있기 때문이 아닌 것이다. 이는 인간이 가질 수밖에 없는 타자성의 숙명이다. 이러한 타자성은 우리가 가지게 되는 다양한 관계들 속에서도 작용하게 되며, 그 결과 우리는 소통 불가의 현상을 지속적으로 경험하게 된다. 이에 대하여 본 연구는 ‘나’라는 주체를 중심으로 나와 나의 심연, 나와 타인, 그리고 나와 총체적 외부세계의 관계에서 일어나는 소통 불가의 현상을 언어, 유사성, 오해의 코드를 통하여 설명하고 이를 전제로 작품을 전개한다. ‘나’의 타자성으로 인하여 소통이 불가한 현상은 작품과 관람자와의 관계에서도 적용된다. 때문에 본인의 작품에도 소통에 대한 믿음은 결여되어 있다. 작품은 모두 소통 불가의 전제 하에 놓이며 존재의 타자성에 보다 집중한다. 이를 위하여 소통의 매개 중 가장 지배적인 영향력을 가지는 언어라는 합의된 기호를 색과 빛, 음을 통하여 와해시키거나 사회적 합의에서 벗어난 새로운 기호로 탄생시키기도 한다. 또한 내용을 담은 음성을 중첩함으로서 언어의 의미를 모호하게 만들거나 개인의 심연에 기반을 둔 고독을 시각적, 청각적 세계로 치환하여 그 의미를 무심한 장면으로 만들기도 하며 서사가 잘려나간 한 장면만을 제시하기도 한다. 기호의 와해와 중첩, 그리고 시각적 은유와 같은 방법들은 작품의 언어적 개념을 숨기기 위한 장치이다. 이는 관람자가 작품의 언어적 개념을 수동적으로 이해하는 관람의 방식을 넘어서 그들의 존재에 근간을 두는 오해를 적극적으로 이끌어내기 위한 방법이기도 하다. 이는 소통 불가를 전제하고 오해를 인정하는 전제가 작품과 관람자가 ‘이해와 오해의 타협점’ 상에서 만나게 할 수 있다고 믿기 때문이다. 본 연구는 인간의 타자성에 의한 소통 불가의 현상을 인정하고 오해의 가능성을 긍정한다. 소통 불가의 현상을 바로 인지하고 이러한 전제 위에서 작품을 제시하는 것은 소통이라는 개념에 의하여 가려졌던 타자성, 그리고 그에 기반을 둔 관계의 새로운 국면을 보여줄 수 있다. 또한 실체와 범주가 불분명한 소통을 향한 외피적인 시도를 넘어서 자신의 타자성을 적극적으로 인지하는 주체들과 작품의 만남을 제안한다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.;Communication is accepted as a very positive meaning in our society, and it is one of the concepts required in many different fields, such as politics, economy, society and culture, etc. It's also an undeniable fact that intervention of the communication concept and its expansion has an immense influence on the stream of modern art. However, it still remain really weak what the substance of communication is, and to what extent of its category we have to define, and the degree of acute perception and reflection on the possibility of communication. This study set up 'I' which can be a principal agent in communication as an individual. 'I' am an existence who cannot but be an other person as to my external world, and my being itself has a perfect meaning. It's because the reason I exist lies in my being itself, not in the fact that the contents which can be delivered to others are in myself. This is a sort of fate of otherness which human beings are born to have. Such otherness comes to operate even in a variety of relationship with others, and as a result we are destined to continuously experience the phenomenon of incommunicability. As regards this, this study, centering on the main agent, the so-called 'I', aims at explaining 'I', my abyss, 'I' & others, and the phenomenon of incommunicability occurring from the relationship between 'I' and overall outside world through language, similarity and code of misunderstanding, on the premise of which, this study will develop an artwork. The phenomenon of incommunicability incurred due to the otherness of 'I' is also applied to the relationship between 'I'-created work and its viewers. Therefore, even this person's work lacks confidence in communication. All artworks exist under the premise of incommunicability, and they are more concentrated on the otherness of being. For this purpose, the agreed sign-so-called language having the most dominant influence among the vehicles of communication is collapsed through color, light and sound, or is created as a new sign coming off from social consensus. In addition, this author makes the linguistic meanings ambiguous by superimposing the voice containing contents, or makes the meanings thoughtless by transferring the solitude based on an individual's abyss to audio-visual world, or sometimes suggests only on scene off which the description of a work is torn. In short, the methods, such as collapse and superimposition of a sign, and visual metaphor are the devices for hiding the linguistic concept of a work. These methods are also used to aggressively draw the viewers' misunderstanding based on their being by going beyond the viewing method of passively understanding the linguistic concept of a work. It's because this author believes that the premise acknowledging misunderstanding on the premise of incommunicability could induce a work and viewers to meet with each other 'on the point of compromise between understanding and misunderstanding.' This study acknowledges the phenomenon of incommunicability due to humans' otherness and affirms the possibility of misunderstanding. Proper cognizance of the phenomenon of incommunicability and suggestion of works on such a premise can show the otherness hidden by the concept of communication and its foundational new phase of relationship. In addition, This study has its significance in that it suggests the meeting between the main agents, who are aggressively cognizant of their otherness, and a work by transcending the superficial attempt toward the communication whose true nature and category are uncertain.
