타자와의 관계성을 나타낸 섬유조형 표현

Abstract

An individual living in a modern society creates relationships with others. The modern convenience in this society is evolving at a fast pace in order to accommodate the needs of the people, and the rational thinking which was formerly applied to the usage of material and commodities have already soaked into the domain of human relationships. People nowadays measure the personalities of people with material base and perceive others as means to an end. However, oblivious of the error of depersonalizing others, people talk about solitude and isolation that springs from incomplete relationships. "對面共話心隔千山" is a phrase from Seong-sim, <Myeong-sim Bo-gam>, which refers to the meaning that although people talk face to face, they remain far apart, as if there were numerous walls of mountains in between them. This refers to the distance between the minds of the people, the solitude and isolation which creates emptiness even amongst the people we consider to be close to. However, such isolation is felt by everyone. This research aims to find the reasons behind such distance, and with such question as a starting point, it is expressed in eight works. This research aimed to find the reasons behind such distance through current literature. By contemplating on the theme of ‘relationships with others’in western philosophy, I conclude that such distance is created by depersonalization of others. Also, by examining Martin Buber’s dialogue personalism, I found that there is an opportunity to perceive others as a human being, and also found ways for us to reconstruct relationship with others. To express the theme effectively, I examined the nature of gauze used in the work, and also examined the implications behind the materials. Also, as a way of creating the work, I examined casting and molding, and found examples of art work using this method. Through this, I found that casting and molding with various materials can serve as an infinite method in expressing art work. Eight works used three symbols - the head, the mountain, and the boat - in order to express the psychological distance and the perception of incomplete relationships. The work was derived from theoretical and methodological investigation of the topic. In the work, the head symbolizes the personal ego, while the mountain symbolizes the psychological distance between the people. The boat is a vessel for a person, symbolizing individual life in a metaphorical way. These three symbols are placed separately, or together, expressing incomplete relationship among people and the process of reflection regarding the reasons behind such incompleteness. While creating this work, I myself carefully reflected on my negative psychological experience and had the chance to investigate such notions. Through this process, I recognized that it was wrong to perceive others in such manner. Thus although this research started with a negative perception of the relationship with others, in the end it gave me the opportunity to understand others as human beings. With such opportunity, I was able to understand myself and the human being more profoundly, and I will continue my work in sculpture regarding the topic of human relationships.;현대 사회를 살아가는 개인은 내가 아닌 타인과 다양한 관계를 맺으며 살아간다. 이 사회에 존재하는 이기(利器)들은 사람들의 편리함을 위해 빠른 속도로 진화하고 있으며, 물질과 재화의 사용에 있어 합리성을 추구하는 사회 전반적인 사고의 흐름은 어느새 인간관계에도 침투해 버렸다. 사람들은 관계에 있어서도 상대의 인격적 가치에 대해 물질적인 잣대로 저울질하며, 타인을 하나의 도구와 이용의 수단으로 인식한다. 하지만 사람들은 타인을 한 인격체로 인식하지 않은 자신의 오류는 망각한 채 불완전한 관계로부터 오는 소외감, 고독감에 대해 말한다. ‘對面共話(대면공화)하되 心隔千山(심격천산)이라’ 이것은 명심보감 성심편에 나오는 구절로 사람과 사람이 얼굴을 맞대고 이야기를 하고 있지만, 마음속에는 산이 몇 겹이나 막혀 있는 것처럼 멀리 떨어져 있다는 뜻이다. 이것은 관계하는 사람들 사이에 생기는 심적 거리감, 소외감, 고독감을 말하는 것으로 본인도 친밀한 관계에 있다고 말하는 사람들과의 관계 속에서 때론 공허감을 느낀다. 하지만 이러한 심리적 경험은 비단 본인만이 겪는 현상은 아닐 것이다. 본 연구자는 ‘나’와 ‘너’ 사이에 왜 이러한 마음의 거리가 생기는지 그 원인에 대해 더 깊이 알고 싶었고, 이러한 물음은 본 연구의 출발점이 되어 8작품으로 표현되었다. 본 연구에서는 관계하지만 관계되어 있지 않은 것 같은 거리감의 근원에 대해 문헌을 통해 탐구하고자 한다. 서양 철학 속에서 나타나는 타자와의 관계에 대한 고찰을 통해 불완전한 인간관계의 원인이 상대에 대한 비인격적인 인식으로부터 비롯되는 것임을 알았다. 또한 마틴 부버의 대화적 인격주의 사상을 살펴봄으로써 타자를 인격적 존재로서 바라보는 재인식의 기회를 갖게 되었고, 보다 온전한 관계로의 회복을 위한 방법을 찾을 수 있었다. 효과적인 주제의 표현을 위해 작품제작에 사용한 거즈의 특성에 대해 알아보고, 소재가 내포하고 있는 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 작품제작의 기법으로 캐스팅과 몰딩의 의미와 재작과정에 대해 알아보고 이 기법이 사용 된 예술작품의 사례들을 연구하였다. 이를 통해 캐스팅과 몰딩은 작품 표현에 있어 다양한 재료로 무궁무진하게 활용하고 응용할 수 있음을 확인 할 수 있었다. 주제에 대한 이론적 탐구와 표현기법 연구를 통하여 제작된 8작품은 두상(頭相), 산(山), 배의 세 가지 상징물을 통해 타자와의 불완전한 관계성 그리고 그로 인한 심리적 거리감, 불완전한 관계에 대한 인식의 과정을 나타낸다. 작품에서 두상(頭相)은 개인적 자아를 상징하며, 산(山)은 사람들 사이의 심리적 거리를 의미한다. 또한 배는 한 인격체를 담는 그릇으로서 개인의 삶을 은유적으로 나타낸다. 이 세 가지 상징물은 단독적으로 또는 함께 배치되어 사람들 사이의 불완전한 관계성과 그 원인 그리고 이에 대한 성찰의 과정을 나타낸다. 본 연구자는 작품을 제작하면서 자신이 느끼는 부정적인 심리적 경험을 조심스레 들춰보고 연구함으로서 타자에 대한 나의 잘못된 인식에 대해 인정하게 되었다. 따라서 본 연구가 관계에 대한 부정적 인식으로부터 시작했지만 연구과정을 통해 타인에 대해 인격적인 존재로서 이해 할 수 있는 긍정적인 경험의 기회를 제공하였다. 본인은 이번 연구를 계기로 타인에 대한 존중을 바탕으로 스스로의 성찰과 동시에 자아와 인간 존재에 대한 이해를 더 깊이 할 것이며, 인격적 관계에 대해 끊임없이 탐구를 바탕으로 조형예술 활동을 이어 갈 것이다.
