에릭 휘태커(Eric Whitacre)의 <다섯 개의 히브리 사랑노래>(Five Hebrew Love Songs) 지휘법에 관한 연구

Abstract

현대음악은 표현기법이나 기보법에 있어 작곡가에 따라 매우 다양한 양상을 보여준다. 이러한 경향은 합창음악에 있어서도 크게 다르지 않아 한 무리의 작곡가에 따라 특정 음악사조를 따르는 경향이 있기보다는 작곡가 개개인에 따른 독특한 음악적 성격이 개개의 작품을 통해 나타나곤 한다. 따라서 현대 작품을 연주하기 위해서는 다른 시대에 비해 더욱더 그 작곡가 개인의 작곡 성향과 세부적인 음악적 표현 방법들을 파악하고 분석할 필요가 있다. 더군다나 합창 음악을 연주하기 위해서는 가사의 강세와 딕션, 가사의 내용, 가사와 음악과의 관계, 반주부의 악기사용, 악기의 연주법 등의 그 작품을 구성하는 중요한 요소들을 세밀히 파악, 연구하여 실제 연주에 적용 시킬 수 있어야 한다. 이와 더불어 악곡의 짜임새 및 화성을 분석하며 가사의 발음과 다이내믹 등의 적절한 표현법에 대한 이해가 바탕이 될 때 비로소 올바른 연주를 위한 충실한 준비가 이루어진다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 20세기 이후 세계 각국에서는 다양하고 새로운 합창음악들이 작곡가마다의 독특한 여러 스타일로 작곡, 연주되고 있다. 각 나라마다의 작품의 스타일을 특별히 규정지을 수 없는 가운데 현재 미국의 작곡가이자 합창 지휘자인 에릭 휘태커(Eric Whitacre, b.1970-)의 작품은, 그 작품의 우수성이나 빈번한 연주로 인한 대중적 인지도에 비해 연구가 거의 없다는 점에 비추어 볼 때, 충분한 연구의 가치가 있으며 이로 인해 휘태커의 합창 작품이 보다 효율적으로 해석, 연주되는 발판이 마련될 수 있을 것이다. 휘태커는 ‘휘태커 화음’(Whitacre-chord)이라는 애칭을 가진 팬다이아토닉 화음을 여러 성부에 나누는 방법을 그의 작곡 어법으로 택했으며 가사에 따라 적절하게 성부를 배치하고 그에 알맞은 화성을 사용함으로써 가사와 음악이 밀접한 관계를 갖고 진행되는 그만의 독특한 작곡어법을 확립하였다. 그의 다양한 합창 작품 중에서 특별히 <다섯 개의 히브리 사랑 노래>(Five Hebrew Love Songs)는 다음의 특징들로 인해 연주자들의 주목을 끌기에 부족함이 없다. 이 곡은 총 다섯 곡의 모음으로 구성되어 있는데 미국 작곡가에 의해 쓰여 진 곡임에도 불구하고 그 가사는 히브리 어로 쓰여 진 사랑 시이다. 각각의 노래는 잦은 변박과 가사 그리기(word painting), 시간에 따른 기보(time notation), 나레이션(narration), 의성어, 우연성의 음(Aleatoric music), 톤 클러스터(tone clusters) 등의 현대적인 표현법과 기보법으로 작곡되었다. 본 논문에서는 현대 합창 음악의 다양성과 현대 합창 음악에 많이 사용되는 표현, 비전통적인 기보법 등을 살펴봄으로써 그에 따른 효율적인 연주를 도모하고자 하였다. 그 실례를 위해 현재 미국의 가장 대중적인 합창 음악작곡가의 한사람인 에릭 휘태커의 <다섯 개의 히브리 사랑 노래>를 택하여 가사와 음악의 두 가지 측면으로 나누어 분석하였다. 가사적 측면에서는 히브리어 가사의 딕션과 강세, 가사에 따른 아티큘레이션을 파악하고 음악적 측면에서는 독특한 리듬과 변박에 따른 곡의 구성과 각 악보에 나타나는 현대 음악 특유의 표현과 기보를 분석하여 가사와 음악의 관련성을 살펴보고 그에 따른 지휘법을 연구하였다.;Contemporary music shows various compositional expression and notation according to individual composer. Therefore the composer's musical characteristics turn out his the most important musical characteristics than the musical trend even in choral music. The analysis of the musical expression such as the text of the song, the relationship between the text and the sound figure, the usage of the accompaniment instruments, is required to perform effectively the comtemporary music. In addition, understanding of the particular compositional techniques of the composer such as the musical structure, harmony, diction, and dynamics are required for the successful nowadays performance. In the 20th century, there has been a variety of choral music written on many different styles. Works by Eric Whitacre, one of the most outstanding composer and choral conductor in the United States, are good examples popularized by modern choral audience. However, a serious study regarding his works has seldom been researched. In this sense, this starting study regarding one of the major compositions by Whitacre will accelerate more study helpful for better understanding to prepare for performance. Eric Whitacre has never been musically educated in his youth. His primary musical study started only when he was a choral member and composition major as a college student. After further graduate study at Julliard, he prolifically wrote choral compositions and accordingly received a fame as a choral composer. Nowadays, he tried to communicate with audience through new technology such as internet and media. Among his compositions, the 'Five Hebrew Love Songs', a collection of five songs written on Hebrew poems, will be examined in this research. Frequent changes of meters, word-painting, time notation, narration, onomatopoeic word, aleatory music, and tone clusters appeared in the five songs show his own compositional description of modern idiom of contemporary musical expression and notation. In this research, a variety of the special expression in modern choral music and non-traditional notation will be discussed. ‘Five Hebrew Love Songs' is selected to understand contemporary musical expression and notation, the characteristics of the songs, their structure, contents of the text, Hebrew diction from ‘Five Hebrew Love Songs' are dicussed in detail to understand appropriated conducting techniques to prepare choral performance effectively.
