Abstract

세자르 프랑크(César Auguste Franck, 1822-1890)는 뛰어난 오르가니스트이자 신실한 종교음악가이며, 훌륭한 스승인 동시에 작곡가였다. 하지만 그는 다른 많은 작곡가들과 달리 만년에 이르러서야 그의 작품들이 인정을 받았다. 당시 유럽은 독일을 중심으로 한 낭만주의 시기로 문학을 비롯한 음악 등에서 화려함을 표현하려는 시도가 이루어지던 반면, 프랑크가 음악을 배웠던 프랑스는 프랑스 혁명을 거치며 화려함과 웅장함 보다는 자유와 평등을 주제로 한 것들이 주류를 이루고 있었다. 이러한 시대적ㆍ사회적 환경 속에서도 그는 고전적인 음악을 장려하고 프랑스만의 음악을 추구하려 하였다. 그리고 그의 이런 노력은 그를 프랑스 근대 음악 발전의 선구자로서 우리들에게 인식되어지게 하였다. 그는 그의 곡에서 고전적인 양식을 바탕으로 변화하기 쉬운 화성이나 급작스러운 전조를 사용하고, 구성상의 자유로운 시도에 있어서는 낭만주의적인 반음계적 요소를 도입하고 순환형식을 사용하고 있다. 이러한 고전적인 방식과 낭만주의적 방식을 음악 속에서 조화시키는 것은 프랑크 특유의 독자적인 양식으로 그는 이를 더욱 발전시켜 악곡을 일관성 있게 통일시켜 갔다. 이러한 프랑크만의 독특하고 다양한 작곡기법들이 잘 나타나 있는 곡은 그의 대표작이며, 유일한 바이올린을 위한 소나타인 <Violin Sonata in A Major>가 있다. 이 곡은 전체 4악장으로 구성되어 있으며, 각 악장의 주제는 3개의 순환동기를 통해 유기적으로 반복ㆍ결합, 그리고 변형되어지면서 각 악장 간에 통일감을 주고 있다. 반면, 조성구조는 단순한 5도 구조가 아닌 3도 관계조의 형태를 취하여 낭만주의 작품다운 색체적인 화성과 과감한 전조가 사용되고 있다. 그렇기에 본 논문에서는 <Violin Sonata in A Major>를 각 악장별로 그 구조와 특성들에 대하여 분석하고 프랑크의 생애를 살펴봄으로써 이와 같은 낭만주의와 고전주의의 기법을 결합한 프랑크의 독특한 음악적 특징들을 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 이를 통해 프랑크 작품관은 물론 <Violin Sonata in A Major>를 이해하는데 도움을 주고자 한다.;In addition to being a composer, César Auguste Franck was an excellent organist, sincere religious musician, and a good mentor. However, unlike many other composers, his work was not fully recognized until his later years, partially due to his historical surroundings. While other parts of Europe glorified in German Romanticism’s fancy, splendid expression in literature and music, France’s focus was primarily on liberty and equality following the French Revolution. Franck is a pioneer of the modern French music, influencing future generations by promoting classical, truly French music representative of his historical and social environment. Accordingly, his classical-based music displays flexible harmony and unexpected modulation. It introduces Romanticism in chromatic scales, and cyclical forms. He creates harmony between Romanticism and Classicism within music, developing his own original style while composing a consistent, uniform work. The Violin Sonata in A Major is his only sonata, which is a showpiece, symbolizing Franck’s original and unique composition style. This piece consists of four movements. Each movement fits together organically while maintaining three separate cyclical structures. In order to understand this work, I have dissected the foundation and characteristics of each movement of the Sonata, while considering Franck’s life, history, and unique musical traits.
