쟝 기유(Jean Guillou)의 오르간 음악

Abstract

오르간 연주가로서 뿐 아니라 작곡가로서도 중요한 위치를 차지하는 쟝 기유는 젊은 나이에 작곡을 시작하여 그는 대단히 개인적이며 드라마틱한 표현법으로 뛰어난 음악세계를 구축하였다. 그가 작곡한 작품들은 현재까지 60개 이상으로 다수의 오르간곡, 협주곡, 관현악곡, 실내악곡, 극음악, 오라토리오 등 아주 다양하다. 그리고 여러 작곡가들의 관현악곡들을 그 자신만의 특유한 기법으로 오르간을 위해 오케스트라적인 효과를 최대한 살려 편곡했다. 그의 오르간 작품 대부분은 지나칠 만큼 기교적이고 무조음악의 특징이 잘 나타난다. 또 거친 선율, 정확성을 요하는 역동적인 리듬과 지나친듯한 오스티나토, 복합적으로 교차하는 리듬이 나타나는 것이 특징이다. 그리고 그의 오르간 작품들은 19세기말과 20세기 초의 프랑스 오르간 심포니의 전통적인 맥락을 훨씬 벗어나는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그 중 가장 자주 연주되는 대표적인 곡인 『Toccata op. 9』는, 20세기 초 프랑스 오르간 심포니에서 자주 사용된 장르로서의 토카타와는 여러 가지 면에서 다른 모습을 보인다. 이 곡은 주로 손건반(manual board)에서 주제가 강조되고, 주제를 구성하는 요소들이 자주 변형되어 나타나는데, 이것은 손건반이 빠르게 진행되는 전형적인 프랑스 토카타와는 다르다. 또한 프랑스 토카타는 일반적으로 페달(pedal board)주제에서 선율이 부각되는데, 이 곡에서는 페달에서 주제선율이 거의 나타나지 않고 후반부에 이르러서는 페달의 빠른 진행으로 높은 기교를 요한다. 곡 전체를 걸쳐 a# 음을 중심으로 한 증4도의 음정관계가 나타나며 기능 화성이 나타나지 않는 다양한 종지적 제스처를 사용함으로써 그의 오르간 작품에서 자주 볼 수 있는 무조적인 특징이 두드러진다. 쟝 기유는 오르간 제작자로서도 활동하고 있다. 그의 개성 넘치고 유려한 오르간 음악 세계와, 풍부하면서도 독특한 음색을 조합해내는 그의 뛰어난 능력이 그가 제작한 오르간들에 고스란히 담겨있다.;Jean Guillou(1930-) is one of the greatest musician of current century. He is a composer, a pianist, an organist and also an organ builder. Although he studied under Marcel Dupré(1886-1971), Maurice Duruflé(1902-1986) and Olivier Messiaen(1908-1992), he has created his own musical style which differs from those of his teachers'. When he began working as a musician, the french organ music was based on romantic and symphonic music of the 19th century. Later, it combined with impressionism and liberalism of the 20th century, and expressed modern sense. In particular, the impressionism in music, which was first started by Debussy, showed 'colorist': expressing deeply felt emotion rather than melody lines or strict form. This trend surely influenced on the french organ music. Jean Guillou himself was also influenced by the trend, and has composed many of his music based on both modern sense and his own taste. By then organ music had very limited boundaries, but he expended them and ushered people into the new age of organ music. He composes and is active in performances; and also works as an organ builder. As a composer, he has written numerous works for organ, as well as orchestral music, chamber music, drama music and oratorios. Among them, the most representative composition is 'Toccata op. 9'(1963) for organ. It has three themes, and unlike other toccatas its structure is similar to sonata form but overall structure is rondo. He has a worldwide reputation as a brilliant concert organist, and has had concerts in various countries, such as France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Austria and Korea. In addition, he has issued over 30 recordings for the EMI and other leading record companies label, and has been awarded several times, including 'Liszt Award' in 1982. Jean Guillou has been working as an organ builder. His engagement in organ building led to collaborations with several organ builders and the construction of instruments: the Kleuker organ which has been used at Centre Notre Dame des Neiges in l'Alpe d'Huez in France. In short, Jean Guillou is regarded as one of the greatest composer, organist and organ builder among his contemporaries, and deserves to be highly praised as a maestro.
