Abstract
These days, there has been increasing the number of school which includes the classes instructors teach the subjects in English, which reflects the importance of English in Korea. Learning English for the academic purpose also has been considered necessary for those who want to study abroad. Like this, the significance of the ability for listening English is gradually strengthening (Flowerdew, 1994; Flowerdew & Milker, 1997). As many of the learners prefer to study in the English-speaking countries and the number of the lectures working in English in colleges are growing, it is essential for the field to be actively discussed. Not only to the students preparing to study abroad, but also to many other English learners with different purpose, listening section in Internet-based TOEFL has become one of the methods that measure academic English listening ability. The recent significant change in the listening section of Internet-based TOEFL is that note-taking is allowed, which heavily affects on the field of teaching English. Researches related to note-taking have been made in other countries since decades ago (DiVesta & Gray, 1972; Faber, Morris, & Liebeman, 2000). The results of the researches that learners who have experienced note-taking training outstand those who have not (Peck & Hannafin, 1983) make us expect a positive result of note-taking in Korea. However, we rarely have methodical studies about teaching note-taking strategies despite the momentous influence of it in Korea. The purpose of this research is to see how the note-taking influences on listening comprehension of college students comparing the effect of repeated listening. For this study, 63 college students from first year to fourth year in Ewha womans university in Seoul are gathered and divided into two groups which are note-taking and repeated listening groups. The note-taking group went through the 60-minutes-long class two times during the week of training period which taught them note-taking strategies, and there were pre-listening comprehension test and post-listening comprehension test to see how much their listening ability is improved. Based on the results of post-listening test, the effect of the three teaching styles defined by Dudley-Evans and Johns (1981) on listening comprehension while taking a note was analyzed. Moreover, the qualities of the students’ notes were analyzed based on the criteria named the Measure of Qualitative Analysis of note quality, which is determined by Dunkel (1988b) depending on the level of the students' listening abilities. Finally, the survey on note-taking to the note-taking group was conducted and the results was used for examining the tendency of the high level and low level students. The research results from the procedures explained above is as in the following. First, the high level students as well as the low level students in the repeated listening group showed the statistically meaningful improvement on listening comprehension. On the other hand, there was not statistically meaningful improvement of the high level students in note-taking group while the low level students of note-taking group showed the highest improvement. In other words, note-taking did not help the high level learners improve their listening comprehension. Second, there was not differences in comprehension of high and low level students affected by the differences of the three teaching styles under the both treatments of note-taking while listening and repeated listening. Although the statistically meaningful differences was not found, it could be seen that the results of the post-listening comprehension test show the big difference between the two levels when listening to the reading style lecture while the evenly improved scores was observed when listening to the communicative style lecture. Third, this research tried to the effect of note-taking and repeated listening on learners' performance of different types of questions on the listening test. While there were the statistically meaningful interactive effect between the two different treatments (note-taking and repeated listening) and question types on the low level students, there were not in case of high level students. Furthermore, the low level students in each group showed the similar average percentage of correct answers score in terms of main idea, speaker’s attitude or purpose, and detail-related questions. However, while the note-taking group showed the high percentage of correct answers, which is .74 in the implication type questions, the repeated listening group's percentage is .39, which is much lower than the one of note-taking group. This reflects that note-taking helps the low level learners imply better. Fourth, the result of analyzing the note quality depending on the three different teaching styles indicates that 'The total-number-of-words score' and 'The test-answerability score' were not influenced by the interaction between the students' levels and teaching styles. And they were not affected by each variable as well. This results are different from the claim that the total number of words is related to long-term memory, which Fisher and Harris(1974) and Norton(1981) found. They are also different results from the one that the more the total number of words, the better the learners' memories, which were found out by Aiken et al(1975). These differences seem to be caused by the reason that this research did not have the participants go through enough training on note-taking while listening. Another reason would be that the listening contents, which contained relatively difficult vocabulary dealt with the topics they had hardly listened to, thus, both of the two different level students were likely to have limit in the number of words they could take notes while listening. On the contrary, this study found that 'The information-units count' and 'The completeness score' were influenced by the interaction between the students' levels and the differences of the three teaching styles. This is the similar result that 'The information-units count' is positively related to memories of main ideas and details of listening in multiple-choice questions, which Dunkel (1988b) found. The results indicates that the higher 'The information-units count' and 'The completeness score, the higher students' listening comprehension. Finally, there were a survey to find the way to use note after listening and the way to take note while listening after the post-listening test with the note-taking group. The analyzed results show that the number of the high level students who responded that they used the more pictures, graphs or charts, or arrow were higher than the number of the low level students who did. However, the number of low level students responded that they use the note after the listening for understanding the lectures they had listened to were higher than the one of high level students. This reflects that the low level students hardly understand the lectures while they were listening to them, but they rather use note-taking they made after the lectures as another opportunity to understand the lectures. Moreover, the number of the low level students who positively answered to the survey question that asks if they used the note they took for answering the questions on the test was about twice as high as the number of the high level students who did. This can be explained that the high level students do not have to rely on the note to draw the memories regarding the lectures, rather they use their memory for answering the questions without note they made. This is also the related result with the one form the first research question that how note-taking and repeated listening affect on the high and low level students’ listening comprehension. The reason why the low level students in note-taking group showed the higher improved score than the other groups or levels would be related to the fact that the low level students actively used the note they took after the lecture or when they solve the problems for having another chance to understand the points in lecture which they could not catch up with at the same time while listening. Likewise, the reason the high level students in note-taking group didn't show improvement of listening comprehension can also be explained by their rarely using the note after listening. Based on the implication suggested above, we can recognize the fact that note-taking can be positively applied to the low level students while teaching listening for the academic purpose English. Especially, when they have to deal with implication question type, the effect is expected higher. In addition, the higher the number of the information units are and the completeness of the note is, the higher listeners’ comprehension becomes. Therefore, the systemic instruction to help leaners make more completed notes while listening will be needed.;영어는 오랫동안 자유로운 의사소통을 위한 세계어로서 그 중요성이 강조되어 왔다.
