종이 조형의 폴딩 앤 컷팅 (Folding & Cutting) 기법을 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

종이는 인간이 생활하면서 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 재료로써 인간의 삶에 스며들어있어 거부감이 없을 뿐 아니라 형태 변형이 자유로워 타 재료에 비해 쉽게 다룰 수 있고, 가벼운 중량 등의 장점으로 종이를 이용한 조형은 현대에 이르러 그 미적, 경제적 응용가치가 인정되면서 새로운 조명을 받게 되었다. 현대 조형 예술의 새로운 표현 매재(媒材)로 종이가 새롭게 제시되고 있는 가운데 본 연구에서는 종이가 지니고 있는 성질과 특성을 이해하고 그 특징을 활용하여, 조형에 관한 다양한 실험과 개발을 통하여 독창적인 조형물로서의 가치를 발견하고, 이를 의상에 응용함으로써 조형 표현의 다각적인 방향을 모색하고자 한다. 더불어 현대 예술 활동 영역의 확대와 패션 디자인의 새로운 시각을 제시함으로써 조형적 재구성을 통한 패션 분야에서의 조형 소재로의 가능성을 보여주고자 함에 그 의의를 두고 있다. 본 연구는 종이조형 기법 중 폴딩(Folding) 기법과 컷팅(Cutting) 기법을 함께 이용하여 그로 인해 표현되는 독특한 형태의 기하하적 모티브를 발견하고, 이를 의상에 응용하여 독창적인 디자인을 표현하고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 내용 및 방법으로는 먼저 종이 조형의 정의와 특성을 정리하고, 종이 조형의 기원과 역사를 문헌고찰, 사진자료 수집, 전문자료 분석, 인터넷 검색 등을 통하여 서양과 동양으로 분류하여 살펴보았으며, 종이 조형의 다양한 기법과 종류를 현대 종이조형 작가들의 작품을 통해 분석하여 이와 관련된 참고 작품을 표집, 조사하였다. 더불어 폴딩 앤 컷팅 기법(Folding & Cutting)의 정의와 특징에 대해 살펴보고, 현대의 패션과 섬유 분야에서 응용된 사례를 컬렉션 분석을 통해 정리해보았다. 작품 제작에 있어서 먼저 종이를 이용하여 다양한 폴딩 앤 컷 기법을 실험해봄으로써 모티브를 제작하고, 이를 복식에 응용하여 총 8작품을 제작하였다. 작품 제작을 통해 본 연구 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 종이와 패브릭의 차이점을 극복하기 위한 방안으로 원단의 이면에 심지를 부착함으로써 원단을 접었을 때 그 효과가 종이와 흡사하게 표현되어 Folding & Cutting이 용이하게 이루어질 수 있었다. 둘째, 원단에 컷팅을 하면 일차적으로 납작한 형태의 공간이 부여되지만 폴딩을 통해 접어지면서 생긴 확장된 3차원의 공간이 생성됨으로써 요철에 의한 신축성이 함께 형성됨을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 폴딩 앤 컷팅 기법을 통한 다양한 기하학적 형태의 발견으로 다양한 입체적 표현이 가능하며, 이를 응용함으로써 소재에 공간감이 부여될 수 있었다. 넷째, 폴딩 앤 컷팅 기법을 통한 입체적 형태는 인체와 연관하여 독특하고 새로운 실루엣 창출을 가능케함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 종이가 지니고 있는 성질과 특성을 이해하고 활용하여, 종이조형의 기법에 관한 다양한 실험과 개발을 통해 패션분야에서의 응용과 활용 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 또한 종이조형의 대표적인 기법인 폴딩(Folding)과 컷팅(Cutting)기법을 함께 이용하여 그로 인해 표현되는 독특한 구조적 특징과 조형성을 의상으로 표현함으로써 조형 감각의 개발 및 창조적 표현 능력의 확대와 함께 조형적 의상을 위한 디자인 감각의 발전을 이루는데 새로운 가능성을 제시할 수 있었다.;Paper is the material that we can often find around us in our lives. Since it is deeply penetrated into our lives, we have no sense of refusal to it, and because it can transform freely, we can treat it more easily than any other material. Its another advantage is the lightness. The formation using paper is newly being highlighted these days as its aesthetic and economic value of application is recognized. In this situation that paper is newly being presented as a new expressive medium in modern formative art, this study understands and uses its characteristics and properties, discovers its value as an original sculpture through various experiments and development on its formation, and applies it to designing clothes in order to grope for its multilateral directions for formative expression. Moreover, this study has its significance in that it aims to show the possibility of paper as a formative material in the field of fashion through formative reconstruction by suggesting a new perspective of fashion design and the extension of modern art area. This study aims to use both folding and cutting techniques among the techniques for paper formation and discover the geometrical motives of unique forms expressed by it and apply it to design clothes to express original design. As the contents and methods of this research, first of all, this article deals with the definition and characteristics of paper formation and considers literatures about the origin and history of paper formation. This research examines it with the division of the West and the East by collecting image materials, analyzing specialized data, and searching for the web. And this study analyzes various techniques and kinds of paper formation with the works of modern paper formation artists and collects and examines reference works related to it. Moreover, this study examines the definition and characteristics of Folding & Cutting technique and arranges the cases applying it in the fields of modern fashion and fiber through collection analysis. In designing works, first, this study uses paper to test it for various Folding & Cutting techniques to produce motives and designs total 8 works applying it to costume design. Through designing the works, this paper has gained the following results. First, this study attaches padding cloth to the other side of fabric as a way to eliminate the difference between paper and fabric so that Folding & Cutting can be easily realized when the fabric is folded and the effect can be similar to that of paper. Second, it has been found that the cutting of fabric provides flat space primarily, but when the extended 3D space is generated through folding, it creates elasticity with the profiles. Third, with the discovery of various geometrical shapes through Folding & Cutting techniques, various cubic expressions can be done, and with this application, a sense of space can be provided to the material. Fourth, it has been learned that the cubic expression realized through Folding & Cutting techniques can create unique and original silhouettes associating with the human body. This study intends to understand and use various properties and features of paper through various experiments and development on paper formation to grope for methods to apply and utilize it in the fashion field. Moreover, as it uses both folding and cutting techniques and expresses unique structural features and formativity expressed by it to design clothes, this study has been able to extend the capacity of creative expression and develop a formative sense and also present new possibility to develop a sense of design for formative clothes.
