Literary Translation Project: The Sea and the Butterfly

Abstract

본 논문은 문학사상사의 2003년도 제 27회 이상문학상 수상작인 김인숙의 “바다와 나비”를 영어로 번역하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이와 함께 본 논문은 문학번역에 대한 이론을 고찰하고 실제 작품을 영어로 번역하는 과정에서 발생한 다수의 번역상의 난점을 해결하는 과정을 보여주고자 한다. 한국문학은 풍부한 문화적 자산과 문학적 우수성에도 불구하고, 해외 무대에서 충분히 평가받고 있지 못한 실정이다. 다행히 최근 들어 한국문학 번역의 중요성에 대한 인식이 높아지면서 정부를 비롯한 민간 차원에서의 번역활동이 점차 활성화 되고 있다. 특히 고전문학, 현대 소설, 시, 희곡 등을 비롯한 다양한 장르에서 번역 시도가 이루어지고 있다는 점은 주목할 만 하다. 그러나 아직 번역 과정 자체에 대한 연구와 논의는 미미한 상태이다. 한국문학 번역이 양적인 면뿐만 아니라 질적인 면으로도 성장하기 위해서는 한국문학 번역의 특수성에 대한 좀더 심도 있는 논의가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 따라서 본 논문은 국내에서 가장 권위 있는 문학상 중의 하나인 이상문학상을 수상한 김인숙의 “바다와 나비”를 번역함으로써 우리 문학의 우수성을 영어권 지역에 알리는데 기여하고, 한글 소설이 영어로 번역되는 과정에서 발생하는 다양한 번역상의 문제들을 사례별로 고찰함으로써 한국문학 번역에 있어 하나의 대안이 되는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 본 논문의 전반부에서는 “바다와 나비”를 번역하는데 있어서 적용된 문학번역 이론을 개괄하고, 실제 번역 과정에서 발생한 번역상의 난점들을 해결하기 위한 방법론을 언어적 차원과 문화적 차원으로 나누어 분석한다. 또한 논문의 후반부에는 이러한 문학번역 방법론이 실제로 어떻게 적용되었는지 비교해볼 수 있도록 번역 전문을 싣는다.;Literary translation is the only way that most readers can gain access to fascinating and important literary works outside of their own culture. Thus, good literary translation is not only helpful but also necessary. The translation of Korean literature into English is now expected to see a gradual increase in demand. However, more attention needs to be given to the actual process of translation for the full potential of translating Korean literature to be realized. This M.A. thesis aims to complete a literary translation as well as examine the methodology and strategies that informed the actual translation process in a theoretical essay. The translation itself is an attempt to translate a prize-winning Korean novella, In-sook Kim’s “Badawa Nabi,” into English text and, at the same time, to retain the unique cultural characteristics of the Korean text. The theoretical essay surveys the literary translation methodology that informed and shaped this translation project and then explores strategies for solving various difficulties encountered in the translation process. In particular, the essay discusses the uniqueness of literary translation in relation to the two traditional poles of translation—literal and free translation. Then the translating strategies are examined on two levels: the linguistic and cultural. On the linguistic level, the essay first pays attention to equivalence of meaning and equivalent effect on readers of the source and target text. On the cultural level, the discussion focuses on how to recreate the salient cultural elements in the source text as vividly as possible in the translating process while minimizing the disruption of the reading flow.
