Abstract
Pansori was designated as important intangible cultural asset No. 5 on December 24, 1964, and later on November 7, 2003, it was selected as UNESCO "Mankind Oral Literature and World Intangible Masterpiece Heritage". Now, Pansori is our proud cultural asset shared not only among Korean people but also throughout the world. Pansori "Heungboga" is said to be of the most Korean style because its story seldom borrowed Chinese old stories or poems, while having rich descriptions and expressions of commoners' grief and pleasure. This study reviews "Poverty Taryeong" of "Heungboga" or one of the 5 model Pansoris, focusing on its musical contents. Despite various researches into Pansori from diverse perspectives, few preceding studies have focused on "Poverty Taryeong" or core of "Heungboga". Since the story of "Poverty Taryeong" was plotted to be pathetic, it is sad enough to "have the audience close to tears". "Poverty Taryeong" is sung by Heungbo or his wife who candidly expresses their poverty-stricken life. This study focuses on "Poverty Taryeong" to analyze its musical contents. For an objective analysis, it would not be sufficient to review a certain school of Pansori or a certain master singer's. Thus, this study divides Pansori into Eastern and Western schools and samples each three master singers representing their schools. Then, stories and melodies are analyzed comparatively among master singers and between schools. To this end, the researcher sampled the discs containing 6 master singers: Song Man-gap, Lee Hwajungsun and Park Cho-wol (II) for Eastern school and Lim Bang-wool, Park Cho-wol (I) and Park Dong-jin for Western school. Thus, their stories and melodies were sampled for the comparative analysis. First of all, the stories were all divided into 8 parts: Part I (lament of poverty 1), Part II (wish for a fortune), Part III (description of poverty), Part IV (lament of poverty 2), Part V (Heungbo's wife's Taryeong for suicide), Part VI (Heungbo Stops His Wife), Part VII (Heungbo's Taryeong for suicide) and Part VIII (Heungbo's Wife Stops Heungbo). The results of comparatively analyzing the stories can be summarized as follows; First, the stories are different between Eastern and Western schools. All three Eastern school master singers' stories consist of 3 or 4 parts out of 8 ones, while those Western school master singers' stories consist of 6 or 7 parts. In case of Eastern school, the story sung by Song Man-gap who was first to publish his disc prevails, while that by Lim Bang-wool prevails in case of Western school. Song Man-gap published his disc 40 years earlier than Lim Bang-wool. Thus, while Song Man-gap's story has prevailed in the Eastern school, Lim Bang-wool's story has been added up by Lee Hwajungsun, Park Rok-joo and Park Cho-wol. Second, unlike other master singers. Park Cho-wol published "Poverty Taryeong" twice; her "Poverty Taryeong 2" story is close to Eastern school's, while her "Poverty Taryeong 1" story is similar to Western school's. The results of comparatively analyzing the melodies of "Poverty Taryeong" can be summed up as follows; First, Song Man-gap, Lee Hwajungsun and Lim Bang-wool use rapid Jingyang (Semachi) rhythms, and Park Rok-joo uses Jungmori rhythms and Park Cho-wol and Park Dong-jin use the slow Jinyangjo. Second, all 6 master signers use Gyemyonjo, while tending to terminate each paragraph of story with the basic sound 'f' or 'c' sound just below the perfect 4 chords. Song Man-gap's melody is centered about 'f' sound but 'c' continuant at the climax. Lee Hwajungsun's melody is short, simple and shorter at climax than other master singers'. Park Rok-joo who uses Jungmori rhythms solely expresses the climax at the 5th rhythm, while terminating with 'f' or 'c' sound like Lim Bang-wool. Park Cho-wol's "Poverty Taryeong 2" which uses Jingyuemyon is characterized by 'c' continuant at the climax. Lim Bang-wool's melody is primarily terminated with 'f' or 'c', and Park Cho-wol's "Poverty Taryeong 1" using Jingyuemyon is terminated with 'c' or 'f', while expressing the climax with the perfect 4 chord upwards from 'c' to 'f' as in the 17th rhythm. Park Dong-jin's "Poverty Taryeong" features wide interval and outstanding climax. The 22nd rhythm is his climax, rising up to 'a flat'. As discussed above, "Poverty Taryeong" sung by the 6 master singers representing Eastern or Western school of Pansori differ in terms of Jinyang rhythm tempo. Namely, this study could infer about the changes of "Poverty Taryeong" over time by analyzing those master singers' characteristics. More diverse stories have been added up to "Poverty Taryeong", while it has been sung using more diverse techniques (Daru).
