음양오행을 현대적 디자인 모티브로 해석한 공간연출용 패브릭

Abstract

산업과 소비자 환경의 트렌드로 유비쿼터스라 불리 우는 정보통신 네트워크가 익숙하게 자리를 잡으면서 간단한 터치와 스크린으로 환경을 통제하는 등의 편리한 생활을 추구하는 경향이 강해지고 있다. 이에 이런 환경 속에서 살고 소비자들의 니즈를 충족시키기 위해 새로운 트렌드를 제시하는 디자인 환경 또한 그에 맞춰 빠르게 변화하고 있다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 ‘편리함’ ‘신속성’ 등의 현대사회에서 주류를 이루고 있는 소비자 트렌드와는 역행하는 감성주의 트렌드의 등장과 확산에 대해 주목하고자 한다. 도시에서의 삶을 포기할 수 없는 현대인들이 자연적인 요소들을 가미해 정신적 해방감을 느끼고자, 도시(In City)에서 느낄 수 있는 자연(Out Nature)이라는 여유로운 삶을 강조하는 라이프스타일을 추구하고 있는데. 이것이 바로 새로운 트렌드로 자리 잡고 있는 ‘그린 노마드’이다. 편리함과 신속성을 위한 대량생산 사회라는 도시에서의 일탈을 통해 자연을 꿈꾸는 것이 아니라 일상의 서정성과 현재성으로 존재하는 자연에 대한 체험적 삶의 표현이라는 관점에서 접근한 이 새로운 트렌드의 등장에 주목할 필요가 있다. 일탈을 꿈꾸는 도시인은 더 이상 휴가와 여행만으로 만족할 수 없다. 도시이던 시골이던 내가 있는 그곳 그 장소가 어디이던 간에 내가 머무는 공간 그 자체에서 정신적인 해방감을 맛보아야 한다는 삶에 대한 질적 욕구가 강해지고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 그린 노마드 적인 성향을 가진 소비자들의 의식 변화에 맞춰 우리의 자연을 가장 효과적으로 표현 할 수 있도록 동양적인 사상의 근본인 음양오행을 기본으로 시각적인 접근방법을 연구하였다. 동양사상에서 자연은 음양오행을 근본으로 하고 있으므로 그 근원인 음양오행에 대해 조사하고 이 사상에 대한 인문학적 입장에서의 철학적 해석이 아닌 음양오행에서 분류해 놓은 세상 만물을 구성하는 5가지 요소인 오행 각각의 분류를 시각적인 조형표현으로 사용하여 작품제작과 연구의 기반으로 한다. 동양 사상의 근본이 되는 음양오행이란 모든 사물 현상이 서로 대립되는 속성을 가진 음과 양으로 이뤄져 있으며 상호조화를 이룬다는 동양철학으로 우주의 기초를 이루는 다섯 가지 물질인 오행, 즉 목(木), 화(火), 토(土), 금(金), 수(水)가 서로 어울려 만물이 조화를 이룬다는 것이다. 이 음양오행의 구성 요소 각각의 상징모티브와 구성 요소 고유의 특성을 현 시대에 맞는 디자인으로 재해석한다. 이를 도시 주거자의 공간 안에 자연의 본질적인 것, 순수한 가치를 찾을 수 있는 조형적인 공간연출용 패브릭으로 디자인을 한다. 특히, 이번 연구의 목적은 공간연출에 있어 직물 특유의 특성을 활용해 공간 연출에 있어 부수적인 요소가 아닌 공간을 구성하는 조형요소로서 주도적인 역할을 할 수 있는 패브릭 제품을 제작하는 것을 목적으로 한다.;In today’s world, information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities. The simultaneous usage of many computational devices and systems allows people access vast amount of information just at their finger tips effortlessly. In accordance to this ubiquitous computing environment, design concept with new trends is also introduced incessantly in order to seek better ways to satisfy the needs of today’s demanding consumers. Rather than focusing on the current design development, which is underlined with speed and convenience of the present society, this paper is like to emphasize on the introduction and growth of the emotionalism trend in modern design milieu. With the rapid urbanization, people are longing more and more to escape from the stressful in-city lifestyle back into the nature that is perceived to be peaceful and healthy. However, it is not easy to just relocate the constitutional habitats. Hence the attempt to introduce the peacefulness and liveliness of the nature into the contemporary urban life, rather than seeking simple exit from the city, is emerged as a new trend. In other words, this emerging trend, which is also known as ‘Green Nomad,’ improves the quality of urban lifestyle by bring-in the nature rather than going into the nature. In relation to this new movement of ‘Green Nomad’ lifestyle, this paper illustrates the visual approach with the oriental concept of Yin-Yang five elements. Yin-Yang five elements are known as the source of the oriental ideology. Due to the purpose of this paper, the concept will not be interpreted from the philosophical standpoint of the humanism. Rather each element of the Yin-Yang five elements will be studied and approached individually in the process of visualizing the figurative expression of the idea. According to the concept, Yin-Yang describes how polar or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other in turn. In addition, interactions and relationships between Yin-Yang system can be further explained using the five elements, namely Fire (火), Earth(土), Metal (金), Water (水), and Trees (木). Elements and symbolic motives of Yin-Yang five elements will be revisited and redesigned through the eyes of the current perspective. By means of the reinterpretation of the concept, fundamentals and values of nature is sublimated into modern figurative design using fabrics. There are three main study points in this paper First, the paper addresses not only the effect of current environment-friendly trend but also continuously changing consumers’ perceptions on the product design. Furthermore, the findings of current and future trend in product design are expressed in relation to Yin-Yang five elements concept. The concept will be articulated in terms of primary color point and basic motives of the art work. Second, the paper illustrates colorations, directions, and emblems that can represent the motive icon of the Yin-Yang five elements. In addition, various materials and methods are applied in order to reshape the concept into not only more simplified but also more modernized design. Laser cutting, digital textile print, needle felt, and stitch techniques are introduced as the expression methods. Using the methods described, ten fabrics with five themes will be produced. Third, further research direction of the production process for figurative fabrics is suggested. It also recommends possible developments for the space decoration fabric using the Yin-Yang five elements concept. In the process of studying modernized interpretation of Yin-Yang five elements as the symbolic motive for the space decoration fabric, three conclusions are extracted. First, it is not preferable for people to simply return to the pure naturalism by sacrificing the gains of urbanization. They rather prefer to bring in the peacefulness and liveliness of the nature on top of modern lifestyle. Second, with the reinterpretation of the Yin-Yang five elements into modern design concept, fundamentals and values of nature can be expressed into figurative fabric design. As a result, fabrics with oriental motive could be expressed using various materials and forms which are not necessarily bounded certain conventional materials, patterns and colors. Furthermore, directions for further study in the field are learned. At last, sophisticated fabric product was resulted from the combination of mass producing mechanic process and classy handcrafting methods. This illustrates how the application of the several different methods in articulation of the space decoration fabric is possible.
