말러의 「어린이의 이상한 뿔피리」 작곡기법 연구

Abstract

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), the renowned Jewish-Austrian composer of the late-Romantic period, achieved historical height in classical symphonic works and lieder. It is also known that the composer Mahler also had been an avid reader of literature and poetry from early age. And one of Mahler's all time favorites was Des Knaben Wunderhorn anthology, Achim von Arnim (1781-1831) and Clemens Brentano's (1778-1842) collection of German folk-poetry from the early Romantic era. The humorous, innocent and fairytale-like text was also full of sober realism, tragedy and gloom. It captured the attention of young Mahler, and inspired him to write songs based on this anthology for 14 years. Most of them were first written in piano accompaniment, and later rearranged for orchestra. And it is this Wunderhorn Lieder for voice and piano, which was chosen as the subject of this study. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the musical elements Mahler used to compose his Wunderhorn Lieder. In order to achieve the objective, the following efforts have been made in this research: A brief outline of Mahler's life was given; his musical style in the vocal works was explicated; the historical background of Des Knaben Wunderhorn anthology and Mahler's relationship with the work was explored; and musical analysis of five of his Wunderhorn songs - "Verlorne Muh", "Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht?", "Das irdische Leben", "Rheinlegendchen", "Wo die schonen Trompeten blasen"- was conducted. It was found that Mahler used a highly individualized combination of various musical elements such as the following: alteration of the song texts; melody descriptive of the lyrics; element of contrast, conflict, and tension; frequent changes in dynamics; modulation; alteration of the major and minor modes; repetition of motivic passage with continuous modification; chromatic scale; altered chords and dissonant chords; landler rhythm and folk music; and military music. It was Mahler's creative and skillful employment of such combination of musical means, which contributed to the making of the unique, brilliantly sophisticated, and pleasure-giving German lieder of supreme status.;구스타프 말러 (Gustav Mahler, 1860-1911) 는 독일 후기 낭만주의를 대표하는 오스트리아 국적의 유대계 작곡가이자 지휘자이다. 그의 교향곡과 오케스트라 가곡은 음악적 성숙도와 영감에 있어 낭만 음악의 최정점을 보여주고 있다. 말러는 우리 시대의 청중들로부터 가장 사랑받는 작곡가 중 한 사람이며, 그의 음악은 연주자들로부터 각광받는 레퍼토리로 자리잡아왔다. 음악가 말러는 문학과 시에 심취한 독서가이기도 했는데, 특히 어려서부터 아힘 폰 아르님 (Achim von Arnim, 1781-1831) 과 클레멘스 브렌타노 (Clemens Brentano 1778-1842) 가 수집한 독일 민요시들로 이루어진「어린이의 이상한 뿔피리 Des Knaben Wunderhorn」시집에 매료되었다고 한다. 유머러스하고, 순진하며, 동화 같은 성격과 더불어, 현실적이며 비극과 슬픔의 요소 또한 포함하는 양면성을 지닌 이 시들로부터 영감을 얻은 말러는 14년 동안「이상한 어린이의 뿔피리」의 시에 24개의 가곡을 작곡하게 된다. 뿔피리 가곡이라 불리는 이 작품들은 두 곡을 제외하고는 말러 초기 가곡에 속하는데, 대부분의 곡들이 처음에는 피아노 반주로 작곡되었고, 후에 오케스트라 반주로 편곡되었다. 그중 5곡인「헛수고 Verlorne Muh」, 「누가 이 노래를 지었을까? Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht?」, 「이 세상살이 Das irdische Leben」, 「라인의 전설 Rheinlegendchen」, 「아름다운 트럼펫 소리 울리는 곳 Wo die schonen Trompeten blasen 」역시 피아노 반주로 먼저 작곡되었고, 후에 오케스트라 가곡으로 편곡되어 「10곡의 뿔피리 가곡집 10 Wunderhorn Lieder」에 속하게 되는데, 이는 여성 연주자에게 적합한 레퍼토리로 간주되는 곡들이기도 하다. 비록 오케스트라 가곡이 더 알려져 있기는 하지만, 본 논문에서는 피아노 반주 버전이 곡의 구성을 더욱 간결, 명료하며 집약적으로 보여주는 장점을 감안하여 이를 연구대상으로 설정하게 되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 말러가 「어린이의 이상한 뿔피리」가곡집을 작곡하는데 사용한 작곡기법을 고찰하기 위함이다. 이를 위해 다음과 같은 내용의 연구를 진행하였다. 첫 번째 부분에서는, 말러의 성장과정과 작곡가와 지휘자로써의 삶, 그의 시기별 가곡과 음악적 특징을 정리하였다. 두 번째 부분에서는, 뿔피리 가곡집의 개요와 말러가 피아노 반주로 작곡한 뿔피리 가곡 중 여성 연주자에게 적합한 5곡의 가곡의 음악분석을 통하여 말러가 이 가곡집에서 사용한 작곡기법들을 자세히 살펴보았다. 이러한 연구 결과, 말러는 다음과 같은 여러 가지의 다양한 작곡기법들 -가사의 변형 및 수정, 가사를 충실히 따르는 선율, 대조와 대비, 갈등과 긴장감의 요소, 넓은 범위의 잦은 셈여림 변화, 전조, 장조와 단조의 대비, 반음계, 변화화음과 불협화음, 렌틀러 리듬, 군대음악의 차용- 을 자신만의 고유한 배합으로 사용하여 음악적으로 독창적이며, 순수하면서도 매우 지적인「어린이의 이상한 뿔피리」가곡집이란 걸작을 탄생시킬 수 있었다는 사실을 발견했다. 아무쪼록 이 논문이 말러의「어린이의 이상한 뿔피리」가곡에 대한 이해를 높이고, 이를 연주하는 분들의 해석과 연주에 도움이 되었으면 하는 바램이다.
