Abstract
Organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) have been attracting because they offer us diverse opportunities related to fabrication processes and applications toward next generation transistors. Especially, unconventional patterning is well known that one of the methods for fabricating low-cost OTFTs. In this study, two approaches are presented for fabrication printed OTFTs using unconventional patterning: electrode transfer and semiconductor single crystals patterning, respectively. First, electrode transfer via pressure-assisted printing method was described. Using the rigiflex trimethylolpropane propoxylate triacrylate (TPT) stamp instead of the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamp, it could be applicable to printing process so that the results' fidelity was enhanced, and the process time was reduced within five minutes by thermal treatment as well. That is, the cracking on the transferred pattern was not observed in comparison with conventional nanotransfer printing (nTP) that has remained a challenging problem caused by the PDMS stamp's intrinsic softness. Moreover, during fabricating the rigiflex TPT stamp from the PDMS mold, low molecular weight siloxane polymer was diffused-out from the PDMS mold onto the surface of the stamp, and it could be as a release layer between the deposited metal layer and the stamp. As a result, we could metal transfer with various patterns to the substrate without any deformations, especially crack-free pattern, and we could successfully fabricated OTFTs using transferred Au source/drain electrodes as well. Second, the preparation of semiconductor single crystals and its patterning were introduced. We obtained single crystals from dodecane with a high boiling point and slight solubility. That is, because dodecane has a relatively higher boiling point (216.2 ℃) than general solvents and linear carbon chains without benzene ring, it is a useful solvent for the growth of single crystals. As a result, single crystals prepared 2 wt % TIPS-pentacene in dodecane could be observed, and we confirmed its crystalline structure by X-ray diffraction (XRD) peak. Also, dodecane could be mixed with good solvents to enhance the solubility of TIPS-pentacene. Moreover, in order to reduce parasitic current paths, we conducted semiconductor patterning by surface modification in that PDMS thin layer as a hydrophobic surface was introduced, and then, UVO exposed to the hydrophobic surface through a mask to selective hydrophilic surface modification. We obtained the value of the mobility was as high as 0.4654 cm2/Vs prepared 5 wt% TIPS-pentacene containing dodecane:chlorobenzene, at the ratio of 3:1 (w/w), and on/off ratio were two orders of magnitude higher than spin-casting.
