Abstract
This study is an analysis of Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach, and a research about Suites transcribed for Viola. Johann Sebastian Bach(1685–1750) was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist whose ecclesiastical and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. The Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach are some of the most performed and recognized solo compositions ever written for cello. They were most likely composed during the period 1717–1723, when Bach served as a Kapellmeister in Köthen. Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach are consist of 6 Suite. This research is mainly about a feature and structure of each Suite. The Suites for Solo Cello were not widely known before the 1900s, and for a long time it was generally thought that the pieces were intended to be etudes. However, Pablo Casals began studying them. after discovering Grützmacher's edition in a thrift shop in Barcelona, Spain at age 13, Although he would later perform the works publicly, it was not until 1925 when he was 48 that he agreed to record the pieces, He becoming the first to record all six suites. Their popularity soared soon after, and Casals' original recording is still widely respected today. The violist, Lillian Fuchs, played Suites for Solo Cello by viola for the first time. Till then, viola did not get much attention as a solo instrument. Thanks to the pioneers like Lillian Fuchs, William Primrose viola become a successful solo instrument. So in this thesis I tried to find out about the great performer, and composer Lillian Fuchs. The Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach are in six movements each, and have the following structure and order of movements. Prelude - Allemande - Courante - Sarabande - Galanteries (Minuets for Suites 1 and 2, Bourrees for 3 and 4, Gavottes for 5 and 6) - Gigue. In This study I compared the versions edited by Johann Peter Kellner and the others like Watson Forbes, Milton Katims, Samuel Lifschey.
