한국 비즈니스 환경에서의 영어 말하기 평가의 내용 선정에 대한 연구

Abstract

글로벌화된 비즈니스 사회에서 영어 의사소통 능력은 필수불가결한 요소가 되었으며 특히 영어로 업무를 많이 진행하게 되는 비즈니스 현장에서는 신입사원 채용, 해외 파견 및 교육 기회 제공 등의 중요한 결정을 할 때 영어 능력을 판단 요소로 활용하고 있다. 한국 대기업들은 인력 채용시 혹은 승진시 특정 기준 이상의 어학자격을 요구하고 있는데 불과 2년 전까지만 해도 주로 사용되었던 어학시험이 TOEIC 듣기와 읽기 시험이었던 반면 최근 활용되는 시험은 토익 말하기 시험과 오픽이다. 이러한 시험들이 중요한 결정을 하는 판단 요소 중 하나로 활용되고 있지만 과연 이러한 시험들이 실제 비즈니스 환경을 어느 정도 반영하고 있는지에 대한 연구는 아직 이뤄진 바가 없다. 따라서 본 연구는 현재 대기업에서 채택한 시험들이 비즈니스 현장을 어느 정도 반영하고 있는지를 알아보고 더 나아가서 향후 비즈니스 말하기 평가에 반영되어야 하는 내용들이 무엇들이 있는지를 알아보았다. 본 연구는 한국 대기업 종사자 100명을 대상으로 3회의 설문조사를 통해 비즈니스 말하기 평가에 대한 합의점을 도출하였다. 본 실험 연구를 통해 얻어진 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 토익 말하기 시험 및 오픽의 평가 내용이 실제 업무와 높은 연관성을 보여준다는 결과가 나타났다. 그러나 평가내용 중 업무와 연관성이 아주 떨어져 아주 낮은 연관성을 보여주는 항목들도 있어 토익 말하기 시험 및 오픽이 지속적으로 비즈니스 영어 말하기 능력을 평가하는 용도로 사용되기 위해서는 이러한 항목들은 제외되거나 기업 자체적으로 그 부분은 제외한 점수를 참고하는 등의 판단을 하는 것이 좋을 것이다. 둘째, 한국 비즈니스 현장에 알맞은 비즈니스 영어 말하기 시험에 포함되어야 하는 내용 관련해서는 너무 전문적인 분야나 영역에 한정된 사항이 아닌 비즈니스 환경에서 공통적으로 자주 일어나는 일을 실제 수험자가 해낼 수 있느냐 없느냐를 평가해야 한다는 의견에 합의점이 이뤄졌다. 전문가 집단이 원하는 비즈니스 영어 말하기 시험에 포함되어야 하는 내용은 어떤 한 분야에 너무 집중되지 않고 모든 비즈니스 환경에서 직급, 직무를 막론하고 수행하게 되는 업무에 대해 평가를 하는 것이며 전문가 집단의 판단으로는 그러한 기본적인 업무 수행이 가능하면 그 이상의 전문적인 업무는 익혀서 수행하면 충분히 가능하다고 보기 때문이다. 결론적으로 기업체는 기본적인 비즈니스 영어 말하기 실력 평가를 위해서는 현행 그대로 시험을 활용하되 지속적으로 실제 업무를 수행하는데 있어 필요로 하는 말하기 능력이 어떤 종류이며 또 어떠한 수준인지에 대한 별도의 연구를 하여 중요한 결정을 내릴 때 명확한 기준을 설정하고 이를 바탕으로 현재 활용하는 시험이 기업의 필요에 적절히 부합하는 시험제도인가를 검토해야 할 것이다. 본 연구를 통해 현재 한국 대기업에서 활용하는 토익 말하기 시험이나 오픽 시험이 본 연구를 통해 비즈니스 환경에 알맞은 시험이라고 판단되었지만 기본적인 의사소통에 대한 것을 평가하는 시험임으로 좀 더 전문적인 분야의 평가를 위해서는 기업 자체적으로 관련 분야의 영어면접을 실시하는 등의 추가적인 평가 도구 도입에 대한 판단이 필요할 것으로 보이며 향후에는 좀 더 세분화된 비즈니스 영어 평가 개발에 대한 연구가 이루어져 각 사업 영역 혹은 직무 영역별 습득해야 하는 영어 학습에 대한 방향제시가 이루어져야 할 것이다.;As the industry is becoming more and more globalized, English has become the communication medium of business area all around the world. Therefore, English communicative competence is considered an important factor when selecting new employees in a company since there are a lot of chances for them to encounter English used tasks in the workplace. Korean companies require certain scores of particular English tests as hiring and promotional qualifications. TOEIC used to be one of the most common such tests but recently a number of companies has changed the particular English tests to English speaking tests such as TOEIC speaking or OPIc. They made this shift due to communication skills being more important than receptive skills that the listening and reading comprehension tests used to measure. Also, the in-house English conversation test was found to be not quite reliable. Since TOEIC speaking or OPIc is used as criteria for important decisions, we could have doubts whether they are actually estimating English skills of the business people on the real workplace setting. For this purpose, this paper will study the relevance between the contents of the TOEIC speaking or OPIc and the English tasks that business people do in their real workplace settings. Then this paper will show the tasks that need to be assessed in order to successfully accomplish their English tasks that they do everyday in their business context. A three-round Delphi surveys were administered to 100 employees working in 5 Korean enterprises to obtain their opinions on the relevance between the tests and their English tasks and on the contents to be included in a Business English speaking test. About the relevance between the tests and their English tasks, results show that out of 35 items, 12 of them were over 4 out of 5 Likert scale at the second Delphi survey and 6 of them were over 4 at the third Delphi. Also, the high-rated items at the second were almost the same as the third one which shows a high consensus. Highly rated items are regarded as the tasks that business people use very often in their office. However, results of items like reading aloud or describing pictures which are the sections included in the TOEIC speaking tests were just above 1 scale out of 5, which means that those kinds of tasks were regarded unauthentic. In total, 21 items from 2nd Delphi and 20 items from 3rd Delphi showed average of over 3.0 scale which means that TOEIC speaking or OPIc is showing high relevance with the English tasks that business people perform. About the contents that need to be included in a Business English speaking test, several items were extracted from the open-question of the 1st Delphi survey and highly rated items that need to be included in a Business English speaking test were conducting meetings with foreign companies, doing conference calls with foreign subsidiaries or foreign companies, presentation on the progressing work in English, discussion on the current issues related to work, etc. Most of the highly rated items were not the tasks that a particular job area was doing and they were mainly common tasks that all the business people do regardless of their job area. This study concluded that the TOEIC speaking test and OPIc that the Korean enterprises are using are assessing the basic level of business speaking ability so it could be use as a 1st round assessment tool when selecting new employees or giving opportunities for the present employees. However, to make an important decision, this study suggests since there are so many varieties of English tasks that people need to perform regarding the company’s business area and their work position, the enterprises should make their own speaking test customized into their business and focusing on the tasks that their employees perform often.
