Abstract
The rapid growth of information technology and the radical paradigm shift to knowledge-based society has brought a lot of changes to the learning environment. Especially, due to the advantage of web networks in learning environments, the teaching and learning strategies based on social constructivism have become popular. Among the many strategies, WBCL(Web-Based Collaborative Learning) is one of the most common type of web-based learning systems. WBCL is defined as a set of processes, that help members of a small group share, search and generate information together with some web resources in order to accomplish a specific common learning goal or outcomes. Despite the several strengths of the WBCL system, it is not necessarily effective for every learner. The effects of the WBCL can differ depending on each individual's traits. For this reason, many previous studies have investigated the effects of learner's traits on learning outcomes. Especially, non-ability traits, such as personality, motivational traits, and learning styles, have been recently identified as determinants of learning. However, these previous researches have only focused on learning outcomes, not learning process. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate the effects of personality traits and self-efficacy as learner's traits on interactions, achievement and satisfaction. By reflecting on such study objectives, the detailed study questions to be answered in this study are as follows: 1. Do learner's traits (personality traits, self-efficacy), interactions(send/receive task-oriented massages, send/receive relationship-oriented massages) and outcomes (achievement, satisfaction) correlate to within in WBCL? 2. Do the learner's interactions (send/receive task-oriented massages, send/receive relationship-oriented massages) mediate a relationship between the learner's traits and achievement in WBCL? 3. Do the learner's interactions (send/receive task-oriented massages, send/receive relationship-oriented massages) mediate a relationship between the learner's traits and satisfaction in WBCL? The personality, self-efficacy, online learning interactions, achievement and satisfaction were measured for this study, aiming for the 52 students who took an online course in 'A' University located in Seoul. The tools that were used in conducting the experiment are WBCL environments, BFI(Big Five Inventory), Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire(MSLQ) for self-efficacy, interaction analysis tools(Veerman & Veldhuis-Diermanse's message classification tool(2001) and SNA(social network analysis)), achievement scores and learning satisfaction questionnaire(Shin, 2003). The data were analyzed by multiple correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The findings of this study are as follows: First, as a result of the correlation analysis, it has been proved that the correlation exists among learner's traits, interactions and outcomes in WBCL. In particular, conscientiousness, self-efficacy, frequency of sending and receiving relationship-oriented messages, and sending task-oriented messages show significant correlation with achievement. Moreover, self-efficacy and sending relationship-oriented messages show a significant correlation with satisfaction. Second, self-efficacy has an effect on achievement(β=.35, p<.05) and the frequency of sending and receiving relationship-oriented messages(β=.30, p<.05; β=.31, p<.05), and sending task-oriented messages(β=.29, p<.05). Thus, the hierarchical regression is conducted to identify that learner's interaction variables mediate the relationship between leaner's traits and achievement. As a result, sending and receiving relationship-oriented messages and sending task-oriented messages mediate learner's self-efficacy and achievement. Also, the result shows that Agreeableness(β=-.27, p<.05) is a negatively significant predictor variable of achievement. Third, self-efficacy has an effect on satisfaction(β=.31, p<.05) and the frequency of sending and receiving relationship-oriented messages(β=.30, p<.05; β=.31, p<.05), and sending task-oriented messages(β=.29, p<.05). Thus the study was conducted the hierarchical regression to identify that the interaction variables mediate the relationship between self-efficacy and satisfaction, but learner's interaction variables could not mediate between these variables. These results can imply that learner traits and interactions influence on achievement at a statistically significant level in WBCL. Especially, some types of learners' interactions mediated between self-efficacy and achievement. Furthermore, agreeableness was a negatively significant predictor variables of achievement, and conscientiousness were negative predictor of satisfaction. In conclusion, the WBCL system should be designed to accommodate different personality and motivational traits to promote greater interactions between learners. The results propose several suggestions and directions for the future research related to learner traits, interactions, and learning outcomes in WBCL. First, the result of this study shows that agreeableness and conscientiousness are negative predictors of learning outcomes, and which is a different result from previous studies. More evidence is needed to establish the relationship among these variables, such as learners' personality traits, self-efficacy, interactions, achievement and satisfaction. Second, this study cannot conduct collective analysis on learner's interaction and outcomes. However, the research of collective traits and actions may be required to get additional or external information that cannot be observed through private traits and behaviors in WBCL. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct group analysis like networks of team interactions, group efficacy or collective outcomes. Third, the focus of this research was on female learners. However, gender has an effect on the qualitative level of interaction and attitude toward cooperating. Accordingly, additional research will need to be conducted to determine the extent of the findings in order to apply to other learning settings or types.
