Leonard Bernstein의 가곡 <La Bonne Cuisine>과 <Two Love Songs>에 관한 연구

Abstract

레너드 번스타인은 미국을 대표하는 지휘자이자 작곡가, 대중에게 음악을 가르치고 전파하는 음악 해설가이자 교육가, 피아니스트였다. 번스타인은 심포니, 뮤지컬, 발레극, 오페라, 가곡, 기악곡 합창곡 등의 다양한 장르의 작품들을 작곡하였으며, 작곡가로써 번스타인의 성공은 그의 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 <웨스트 사이드 스토리>(West Side Story)를 통해 이루어졌다. 번스타인은 누구에게나 쉽게 다가갈 수 있는 절충적이고 감성적인 음악을 추구하였다. 그래서 그는 미국의 대중적인 어법과 20세기에 성행하던 음악적 기법을 적절히 혼합하여 대중적이면서도 독창적인 가치를 지니는 작품을 작곡하였다. 화성은 빈번한 전조와 비화성음, 반음계 등을 사용하였지만 곡의 맥락 안에서 크게 두드러지는 요소는 아니다. 대중 어법으로는 재즈의 싱코페이션을 자주 사용하였으며, 말하기 리듬에 맞춘 잦은 변박이 특징적이다. 또한 리듬과 화성을 토대로 하여 불규칙하지만 간단하면서도 감성적인 선율을 만들어 낸다. 이렇게 만들어진 선율의 대조와 반복, 변형을 통해 그의 작품은 유기적으로 연결되어진 구조를 갖는다. 국내에 번스타인의 성악 음악은 대중음악인 뮤지컬 <웨스트 사이드 스토리>의 상연과 영화화를 통해 알려지기 시작하였다. 그의 오페라 작품은 상연이 거의 이루어 지지 않고 있으나 최근 들어 콜로라투라 성악가들에 의해 오페레타 <캔디드>(Candide) 중 퀘네공드의 아리아 “화려하고 즐겁게”(Glitter and Be Gay)가 관심을 가지고 연주되기 시작했다. 그의 가곡 중에서는 연가곡 <나는 음악이 싫어요!>(I Hate Music!)만이 연주, 연구되어 지고 있다. 필자는 이를 토대로 번스타인의 가곡에 대한 연구가 더 필요하다고 느꼈으며, <나는 음악이 싫어요!> 다음으로 번스타인의 재치와 음악성을 살펴 볼 수 있는 그의 가곡 작품 <맛있는 요리>(La Bonne Cuisine)와 <두 개의 사랑 노래>(Two Love Songs)의 분석을 통해 번스타인의 음악적 특징을 살펴보았다. 1941년부터 1957년까지 번스타인이 가장 활발한 작곡 활동을 보였던 시기의 작품인, 네 개의 프랑스 요리법을 사용하여 작곡한 <맛있는 요리>와 번역되어진 릴케의 두 개의 시를 사용한 <두 개의 사랑 노래>에서는 그의 음악적 특징이 충분히 드러나고 있다. 두 작품 모두 가사의 진행에 맞추어 다양한 리듬, 도약음과 순차음으로 이루어진 선율들을 통해 음악이 진행되며, 이러한 선율들의 변형과 확대를 통해 작품들이 진행되어진다. 번스타인은 음악적 진행에 따라 불협화음과 비화성음들은 적절히 배치하였고, 그로 인한 소리적 불편함은 반복적인 사용을 통해 해결하였다. <맛있는 요리>는 요리의 진행에 걸리는 시간적 흐름에 따른 박자와 템포, 조성의 변화를 통해 실제로 요리가 진행되는 것 같은 극적인 효과를 가지며, <두 개의 사랑 노래>는 요리법 보단 분명한 감성과 운율을 지닌 시에 따른 극적인 선율, 또는 내면의 이야기를 낭독하는 듯한 선율을 창조하여, 보다 서정적이고 예술적인 면모를 보여주고 있다.;Bernstein was a U.S.―representing conductor, composer, music commentator, and pianist. His debut as a conductor is known to be a memorable event in the 20th musical history in the U.S., indicating that his sudden debut was successful. The famous Broadway musical West Side Story shows his great success as a composer. Bernstein pursued the eclectic and emotional style of music which is easy for anyone to approach. He combined the popular expression with the musical techniques that was popular at the time in order to create both unique and popular music. Though the harmony is not a remarkable element in his music, he uses transition, discord, and a chromatic scale frequently. In terms of the popular expressions, his music is characterized by the frequent usage of syncopation and a rhythmical change along with the speaking beat. A combination of the unique rhythm and harmony makes an irregular, simple, but emotional melody, which comprises the organic musical construction through antistrophe, repetition, and variation. Bernstein's vocal music started to be known to the public through the musical West Side Story. His operas has seldom been performed until recently, when some coloratura started to perform the aria Glitter Be and Gay from the operetta Candide. Among his song cycle, I Hate Music is the only one that has been studied and performed. Under the need to study further of the lied by Bernstein, in this thesis the analysis was done to La Bonne Cuisine and Two Love Songs, which are published and considered relatively easy to perform, so as to explore the characteristics of the music by Bernstein, The musical characteristics of Bernstein is well shown in La Bonne Cuisine, which employs the four French cuisines composed from 1941 to 1957, and Two Love Songs, which is based on the poem by Rilke. Using diversified rhythms and unique melody, Bernstein breaks down the music in accordance to the lyrical progress and uses antistrophe, couplet, variation, and extension. La Bonne Cuisine has a dramatic effect as if cooking is taking place as the music progresses, while Two Love Songs reveals the artistic feature through the emotional and rhythmical poem.
