존 윌리엄스(John Williams)의 테마음악 분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

With growing interest in the film industry nowadays, this thesis examines the role and effect of film scores. In the movie, film scores serve more than an ancillary function such as charging a dramatic suspension of a scene; they also have a significant influence on the market sales of movie. Among the various types of music, large-scaled symphonic sound-based film scores have been widely composed and used to date in the movie industry, and the integration of new genres into existing film scores has made it possible to broaden the audience pool, which used to be mainly comprised of a few admirers. As film scores, apart from pictures, have become an independent, profitable, and valuable product of culture industry, the importance of role and meaning that film scores convey in the movie has escalated as well. Thus, to better understand and produce high-quality film scores, it is vital to comprehend composer’s genuine intention behind scenes. To this end, I analyze the themes of the following films, <Catch Me If You Can>, <Memoirs of a Geisha>, and <Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban>, as a case study, the film scores of which are all composed by John Williams, a renowned American composer of many of the most famous film scores in Hollywood history. In doing so, I define his scoring style and discuss how the themes in the movie function in conveying the messages of the movie. For analysis, I discuss John Williams’ legacy in Hollywood and examine his musical style and background in light of his life and works. I also analyze how the characteristics of movie themes, such as structure and formality, vary in accordance with the characters, atmosphere, and corresponding scenes of the movie. Based on the foregoing analyses, I conclude that John Williams effectively delivers the message of movie by linking the motif of opening music to the entire scores as the story of movie develops or associating remarkable melodies by altering tone-relationships between themes. Put otherwise, John Williams reflects the inner state of characters in the movie based on the accurate knowledge of the motif of work, and deploys movie themes properly in accordance with the development of plots and circumstances of story.;본 논문에서는 현대사회에서 관심이 높아지고 있는 영화산업에 주목하고 그와 함께 성장해 온 영화음악에 초점을 두었다. 영화제작에 있어 음악의 역할과 효과는 단순히 영상을 보조하는 수단을 넘어서 영화의 파급효과에도 중요한 요인이 된다. 영화에 사용되는 음악의 종류는 다양하지만 영화음악 산업에서 대규모의 심포닉 사운드(Symphonic Sound)로 만들어진 영화음악은 영화의 발명이래로 오늘날까지 여전히 선호되고 있고, 좀 더 다양한 장르가 영화음악에 융화되어 소수의 관심대상이었던 영화음악이 보다 넓은 의미에서의 대중을 흡수하게 되었다. 결과적으로 영화음악이 영상과 개별적으로 분리되어서도 충분한 문화산업으로의 가치를 갖게 되면서 영화음악의 역할과 그 의미의 중요성에 대한 인식이 날로 더해가고 있다. 따라서 완성도 높은 영화음악이 제작되기 위해서는 영화에 등장하는 테마음악을 작곡함에 있어서, 작곡자의 작품의도와 영상과의 상관관계를 분석하는 연구가 필요하다고 보았다. 본 연구는 영화음악가 존 윌리엄스(John Williams, 1932∼)의 <캐치 미 이프 유 캔(Catch Me If You Can)>, <게이샤의 추억(Memoirs Of A Geisha)>, <해리포터와 아즈카반의 죄수(Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban)>의 테마음악을 분석하여 존 윌리엄스의 음악적 스타일을 분석해 보고, 영화의 스토리를 전달함에 있어서 테마음악이 어떠한 역할을 하는지 알아보고자 하였다. 연구방법으로는 할리우드에서의 존 윌리엄스의 위치를 알아보고 생애와 작품세계를 통해 음악적 배경과 스타일을 살펴보고자 하였다. 또한 영화의 전개에 따라 등장하는 인물 또는 분위기 중심의 요소를 중심으로 음악의 구성과 형식, 테마음악이 나오는 장면에 따른 음악적 특징을 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해서 존 윌리엄스의 테마음악은 전체 이야기가 진행될 때 오프닝 음악에서 나오는 모티브를 곡 전체에 연결하여 사용하거나 특징적인 선율을 테마음악 간의 음정관계의 변화를 통해 연관성을 부여함으로써 주제를 효과적으로 반영한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 다시 말해 정확한 작품의도에 입각하여 등장인물의 내면심리를 반영하고 무엇보다 이야기의 구조를 따라가면서 상황에 적절하게 전개한다는 결론에 도달할 수 있었다.
