자족(自足)을 주제로 한 일러스트레이션 표현 연구

Abstract

사람은 안정된 것을 선호한다. 불안정한 것보다 안정된 상태를 편하게 느끼며 이러한 상태를 추구한다. 이것은 우리의 마음에 관해서도 마찬가지이다. 행복, 평안 등으로 표현되는 이러한 마음 상태에 대해 사람들은 예전부터 그 본질에 대해 끊임없이 연구하고 평온한 상태의 삶을 갈망해왔다. 특히 행복과 마음의 평안에 대한 현대인들의 관심은 날로 뜨거워져 가고 이는 각종 사회 현상으로 증명되는 듯하다. 서점가에는 마음의 평안과 삶의 행복의 비결에 관한 책들이 쏟아져 나오고 베스트셀러를 차지하고 있으며 최근에는 각 나라의 행복지수가 발표되면서 사람들의 각별한 관심을 받고 있다. 이 결과를 놓고 사람들은 행복을 느끼게 하는 요소와 그 관련성을 분석하며 행복의 비결을 찾으려 하고 있다. 사람들의 이런 반응은 그만큼 그들의 현재의 삶이 행복하고 평안하지 못하며 불안한 상황 속에 놓여있음을 반증하는 것일 것이다. 그렇다면 우리들은 왜 이리도 편안하지 못하고 지치고 피곤한 마음을 가지고 살아가는 것일까. 편안하고 행복한 삶을 영위하기 위해 필요한 것은 무엇일까. 본 연구자는 이것을 자족이라고 생각하였다. 자족이 평안한 삶을 위한 모든 조건을 제공하는 것은 아니지만 그 기본이 된다고 생각했다. 자족은 현재의 자신의 상황에 만족하는 마음으로서 행복하고 안정된 삶을 살기 위한 중요한 요소라고 생각한다. 그림은 본질적으로 사람들과 커뮤니케이션을 하기 위한 목적을 가지는데, 본 연구자는 이러한 자족이라는 메시지를 사람들에게 전하고 싶어 그 내용을 일러스트레이션에 담게 되었다. 이를 시각적으로 나타내기에 적합한 표현 방법으로서 자족의 메시지가 내포하듯 최소한의 요소로 간결하고 함축적인 시각 이미지를 구현하기 위하여 먹을 주재료로 사용하고, 관념화된 형태가 사용되었다. 본론에서는 본인 작품의 의미 내용 즉 주제인 자족의 의미에 대해 서술하고, 본인 작품의 감성 내용, 즉 시각 표현 방식인 관념화된 형태에 대해 설명하였다. 주제를 설명하는 부분에서는 자족에 대하여 참고 문헌을 통해 일반적인 정의를 살펴보고, 본인의 생각을 바탕으로 하여 그 특성을 한 번 더 설명하였다. 자족의 구체적인 특성을 밝혀 본 연구자가 전달하고자 하는 메시지에 대한 이해를 높이고자 하였다. 시각 표현의 수단으로 사용된 관념화된 형태는 아직까지 확실히 정립된 이론이나 설명이 있는 분야는 아니다. 그래서 이제까지 나온 인지심리학 분야의 이론과 현재 진행되고 있는 시각 관념에 대한 결과를 정리하고 이에 대한 실제적인 사례 작품을 예로 들어 그 의미를 구체화하려 노력하였다. 그리고 관념화된 형태 이외에 본인 작품에 나타난 시각적 특징들을 묶어 설명하였다. 마지막으로 이러한 의미 내용과 감성 내용을 결과로 한 본인의 작품을 제작하여 그에 대한 의도와 시각 표현 방법을 전체적으로 설명하고 각 각의 개별적 작품에 대해 기법과 의미에 대해 설명하였다. 본 논문을 통하여 본인이 작업한 일러스트레이션의 의미와 방법적인 검토를 거쳐 앞으로 사람들에게 더욱 호소력 있고 의미 있는 일러스트레이션을 제작하는 발전의 계기로 삼고자 한다.;Pictures including their own stories are a means of communication between artists and viewers. Also, paintings having visual forms involve methods for drawing and coloring. The aim of this thesis is to describe the theme and the visual expression techniques of my illustration in which a story is comprised of a series of scenes drawn on eight papers. The main subject of my work is self-contentment that means an attitude toward accepting all given circumstances. In my view, people need to acknowledge who they are to live a creative and active life rather than to have the idea of self-abandonment and act passively in their surroundings. Thus, because self-contentment is a fundamental factor to achieve stability of mind, my illustration is designed to give viewers an opportunity to think about conditions of a worthy life. In terms of methods for visual expression, the concept of visual ideation is used in my illustration. Ideation that means the process of forming ideas in psychology has been applied to various fields. As human beings ideate in order to efficiently perceive and retain a great deal of formation in their memory, visual ideation is a way to simply memorize the attributes of perceived visual objects. As ideation has a typical symbol, visual ideation indicates visualized images in my illustration. A visual form is simplified as all of the detailed and additional matters are summarized according to the process of ideation to think efficiently. For this reason, a minimum number of elements are used in my illustration. Ideation is selected as a method for expression because it is appropriate to convey the meaning and contents of self-contentment in a simply way. My illustration drawn using ink blurring effects and graphical lines shows a contrast between natural and geometric factors as expression techniques. As images are blurred to smoothly connect a lot of works piled up and a darkening sky, it is implied that people should sleep at night in my illustration. However, because ink blurring effects do not bring tension, fun, and a clear theme to the picture, geometric shapes are added. The difference between a night sky and straight-sided or round figures gives visual amusement and helps improve message accuracy. The limitation of this study is to lack concrete expressions due to ideation, show vague visual images if texts are removed from my illustration, and insufficiently examine the meanings and characteristics of my thesis because of the absence of the preceding study on visual ideation. In my opinion, I need to attempt to make various forms of visual expression, and more researchers or illustrators should study visual ideation more deeply. My illustration would refresh viewers who get exhausted from their busy life and give a sense of stability.
