조디 피콜트「쌍둥이 별」을 통해 바라본 무용창작작품 <너에게 나를 보내다>에 관한 연구

Abstract

오늘날 예술작품은 타 장르와 융합하여 새로운 표현수단을 만들면서 장르간의 영역이 확장되고 다양한 형태의 공연이 창조되고 있다. 무용에 있어서도 타 장르와의 접목은 움직임 표현에 시각적인 도움을 주고 작품의 이미지를 효과적으로 전달하는데 기여하고 있다. 그 중에서도 문학의 수용은 안무에 있어 원작이 갖는 형태와 의미를 새롭게 재해석하는 창의적 소재와 동기부여의 촉매 역할을 하고 있다. 본 연구는 조디 피콜트의 소설『쌍둥이 별 (My Sister's Keeper)』을 바탕으로 안무되어진 무용 창작 작품 <너에게 나를 보내다 (2009)>에 관한 연구로서, 소설에서 다루어지고 있는 일곱 명의 인물 중 사라(엄마)와 안나(딸)의 대립적인 상황에 주목하고 이를 움직임으로 다루었다. 피콜트는 자신의 소설에서 윤리적이고 사회적인 문제를 소재로 하여 그 안에서 인간관계의 복잡함과 허약함을 견고하게 포착해 낸다.『쌍둥이 별』역시 윤리와 모성, 법, 그리고 사랑과 가족에 대한 이야기로 구성되어 있으며, 이 중 엄마와 딸이 갖는 갈등과 선택이라는 혼란스러운 상황을 무용으로 작품화 시켜 그 원인이 되고 있는 맞춤아기에 대한 사회적, 윤리적 문제의 논란을 전달하고자 하였다. 또한 한 공간 내에서 두 인물의 서로 다른 심리적인 면을 전달하기 위해 영상 매체를 사용하여 무대 위의 무용수와 영상 속 무용수의 이미지를 연결시켜 관객에게 작품의 주제를 효과적으로 전달하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 창작 작품 <너에게 나를 보내다>의 각 장면을 무대 구성 및 장면, 무용수의 이동경로와 움직임, 그리고 영상의 사용과 이미지로 나누어 연구하였다. 각 장면마다 보여지는 안무적 특징을 종합적으로 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 1장에서는 안나가 언니를 위해 희생하지만, 이것은 외부적인 강압에 의해 이루어진 것으로 안나의 불안한 심리 상태를 표현하였다. 이를 위해 움직임의 공간을 상수 뒤쪽에서 앞쪽으로 제한시키고, 동작에 있어서도 낮은 상태의 움직임과 손가락, 팔, 상체만을 집중적으로 다루었으며 무용수의 시선 역시 제한시켰다. 또한 안나가 언니의 치료 목적을 위해 유전자 조작으로 세상에 태어나게 된 것을 연출하고자 여러 조각들이 모여서 사람의 형체를 만드는 이미지를 영상을 통해 보여주었다. 둘째, 2장은 안나와 사라와의 갈등이 시작되는 부분으로서, 서로의 대립되는 상황을 연출하고자 공간 설정에 있어서 상수에는 영상을 위치시키고, 하수에는 무용수를 위치시켰다. 직선적인 경로의 삼각형 구도로부터 안나의 날카롭고 강한 부정의 심리상태를 표현하였는데 작품이 전개됨에 따라 움직임의 범위는 점점 확대되며 다양해지고, 빠른 템포의 동작에 강한 엑센트를 주면서 긴장감을 고조시켰다. 영상 사용에 있어서도 이전과 같은 이미지에 색의 변화, 화면의 분할 및 증가, 회전, 속도 변화의 효과를 주어 무대 위의 무용수와 영상 속 이미지의 대립적이고 강한 느낌을 한 공간에서 표현하였으며, 반복적인 이미지에 효과만을 달리한 영상으로 관객의 시선이 분산되는 문제점을 줄이고자 하였다. 마지막으로 3장은 이전까지의 움직임과 영상, 그리고 음악으로부터 최고조로 끌어올렸던 분위기에서 벗어나 무대 위의 무용수 움직임과 영상의 이미지를 간결화 하였다. 영상까지의 짧은 사선의 길 위에서 무용수의 느낌으로 마지막을 장식하여 작품에서 말하고자 하는 윤리적 문제에 대한 논쟁을 관객에게 던지고자 하였다. 이와 같이 소설의 텍스트를 소재로 하여 안무되어진 무용 창작 작품 <너에게 나를 보내다>는 각 장면에서 표현하고자 하는 내용을 무대의 구성과 움직임, 영상의 이미지로 나누어 각 장의 전개방식을 통하여 작품을 완성하였으며, 이로부터 윤리적으로 문제가 되고 있는 맞춤아기에 대한 사회적 이슈의 옳고 그름의 판단을 나누는 논의의 장을 마련하고자 하였다.;Today, art works is fused with other genres to create a new expression means while genre has been expanded over the area; various types of performances are being created. Even combining with other genres in dances gives a visual help to movement expression and support to deliver the image of the work effectively. Among them, the acceptance of literature in the original choreography plays as a catalyst in creative material to reinterpret the form of original work and the meaning and motivate. This research is about creative dance works <I am sending myself to you> which is designed based on 『My sister’s Keeper』 by Jodi Picoult and it carried out the movement focusing on conflict situation in between Sarah(mother) and Anna(daughter) in the seven characters. Picoult grasps complexity and weakness in human relationship with ethical and social issue in his novel.『My sister’s Keeper』 also consists of ethics, motherhood, law and a story about love and family, it conveys controversy about social and ethical issues on ‘Designer Baby’ which is causative by describing conflict and choice with dance in between mother and daughter in a confused situation. Moreover visual medium is used to convey the psychological side of two characters on the same stage and connects one in the stage and the other in the video image to show the topic effectively to audience. To achieve it, I researched by dividing each scene in <I am send myself to you>- stage configuration of each scene and scene, dancer’s path and movement, and video image usage and image Choreography features per each scene is shown as follows. Firstly, in act 1, Anna sacrifices for her sister but express her unstable psychological state because of external coercion. To do this, The space of motion is limited from behind of the upper part to lower part, the motion is also limited to low movement, and concentrated on finger, arms and upper body movements, and also dancer’s sight is limited. To show Anna’s birth back ground which was planned with alteration of genes for her sister’s treatment, an video image which was forming with several pieces gathered into a human body was shown. Secondly, in act 2, conflict between Anna and Sarah starts. Video image is placed at the upper part to feature the conflict situation and dancer at the lower part. Anna’s sharp and strong negative psychological state is expressed from a triangle composition of a straight path. As the story developing, the range of movement is extended, gave a strong accent with fast-paced action and the tension was escalated. She gives an effect in using video with the color change of the video image as before, the screen split and increase, rotation, and speed change. She expresses oppositive and strong feelings of dancers on the stage and the video image. She also tries to reduce the audience's attention distributed by differentiating effect on repeated video image. Finally, in Act 3, the mood is broken away from the peak with the previous movement and video, and music, and dancer’s movements and video image become concise. She finished with the dancer’s feeling on the short line to give the impression about ethical issues which were intended to show to the audience. Thus, the creative dance work: <I am sending myself to you> with text of the novel material, accomplished by dividing each intended expression context into scene composition, movement and video image though deployment. It tried to make a chance to think about discrimination of right and wrong of social issues about ‘Designer baby’ which has been ethical issue.
