Abstract
This present study investigates the effects of listening support and proficiency level on Korean EFL learners’ listening comprehension with the three oral texts. The participants were 152 Korean university students who took five listening tests, including three main listening tests, which were based in this study. They were divided into two groups, an experimental group and a control group, and also two levels, a high proficiency level and a low proficiency level. There were three oral texts; a casual text, a semiformal text and a formal text. The listening supports were reading, listening and speaking activities. The findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows. There were no differences with the casual text regardless proficiency level and with or without listening support. However, there were significant differences with the semiformal text between groups and both high and low proficiency levels. The two levels in the experimental group outperformed them in the control group. With the formal text, which had most difficult features, the experimental group with listening support achieved better results than the control group without it. The high proficiency level in the experimental group outperformed that in the control group with the formal text, but the low proficiency level did not show meaningful differences with the same text. Within the experimental groups, overall, experimental group 1 scored the highest with all three oral texts regardless of the listening support type. The high level in the experimental group showed significant differences with both the casual text and the semiformal text, but not so with the formal text. Therefore, the relationship between listening support and oral text type cannot be strongly confirmed. However, the high proficiency level had the advantage of listening support over the low proficiency level. Learners assessed the difficulty of each text exactly, which, through analysis of their responses, indicated that reading and speaking supports were not relatively useful for listening comprehension tests. Based on the findings of the study, pedagogical and theoretical implications and recommendations for further study were presented.
