시리얼 드라마의 서사 확장 원리 연구

Abstract

The appearance of the digital paradigm has influenced on the contents and forms of the work with media environment. At the turn of the year 2000, the USA TV drama has made sure of internet channels through digital file conversion technology and has built a new way that is different from the existing TV dramas with complicated narrative which including the properties of digital storytelling. The huge narrative of the USA TV drama excites season-system has became a new form of never ending story that has been reborn in the digital paradigm. This study has focused on the narrative of the USA TV drama which has built up the narrative with long-lasting suspense from one season to another. And then, this study has made the principle of narrative extension clear through the analysis of narrative structure and the classification is followed by narrative extension way. A serial drama has extended the narrative length horizontally through overlapping each episode and the narrative range vertically through separating each narrative paradigm. Especially, narrative paradigm which could be the criterion of narrative extension could be changed by different narrative components - character, event, background space. So, The types of serial drama is classified according to the narrative component which is strengthened preponderantly. The type of emphasizing on the event has extended the narrative vertically through the separation of a kernel and also has extended the narrative horizontally through the successive repetition of the kernels have same structure. The type of emphasizing on the character has extended the narrative vertically through the main character group could create more plentiful story and also has extended the narrative horizontally through the addition of main character group and complicated relationship among characters. The type of emphasizing on the background space has extended the narrative vertically through the exploration of the space that leads to character's action and the discovery of a closet space. This type has extended the narrative horizontally also through the addition of new background space that leads to character's action and the movement to the new space. Based on the discussion mentioned above, the narrative extension principle of serial drama is summarized as follows. First, each narrative component is emphasized its own peculiarity that make its possible to change the narrative component of another narrative combination. Second, narrative constitution is complicated. So it is possible to realize suspense which create the continuous tension. Third, narrative development is open to extend the channel could put a new narrative into the existing narrative. Such discussion provides meaningful implications for the development of Korean TV drama narrative structure that could be suitable for season system and the evolution of the narrative structure of old-media contents in the digital paradigm. TV drama secure the popularity of new media epoch through accepting the properties of digital in terms of narrative.;디지털 패러다임이 도래하면서 미디어 환경과 함께 콘텐츠의 내용과 형식에도 뚜렷한 변화가 일어났다. 2000년대에 들어서면서부터 케이블 방송과 인터넷 망을 통해 국내에서 급속도로 확산되고 있는 미국 드라마는 디지털 패러다임 아래 올드 미디어 콘텐츠의 내용과 형식의 변화 양상을 잘 보여준다. TV 방송 콘텐츠로서 미국 드라마는 외적으로는 디지털 파일 변환 기술을 통해 인터넷 채널을 확보하고, 내적으로는 ‘백과사전적’이고 ‘과정추론적’인 디지털 스토리텔링의 요소를 함축한 복잡하고 방대한 서사를 구축하며 기존 TV 드라마와 차별화된 양식을 탄생시켰다. 특히, 중장기 단위의 시즌 제도를 가능하게 만든 미국 드라마의 방대한 서사는 디지털 패러다임 속에서 재탄생한 네버엔딩스토리(Never Ending Story)의 새로운 양상으로 자리 잡았다. 이에 본 연구는 미국 드라마가 시즌을 거듭하면서 지속적으로 긴장감 있는 서사를 구축하는 미국 드라마 고유의 서사 구조에 주목하고 서사 확장 방식에 따른 유형 분류를 통해 궁극적으로 서사를 확장시키는 원리를 밝힌다. 우선, 드라마를 구성하는 각 에피소드와 시즌이 유기적으로 연결되는 시리얼 드라마의 서사 구조는 각 에피소드가 중첩되는 수평적 연속을 통해 서사 길이를 연장하고 독립적 서사 계열체로서 기능하는 에피소드의 수직적 확산을 통해 드라마 전체 서사를 확장한다. 특히, 시리얼 드라마의 수직적 확산에 있어서 서사를 구성하는 사건, 인물, 공간의 요소 중에서 어느 요소를 중점적으로 선택, 확대 시키느냐에 따라서 서사 확장의 기준이 되는 서사 계열체가 달라지고 이에 따라 시리얼 드라마의 서사 확장 유형을 나눌 수 있다. 사건을 중심으로 서사를 확장하는 유형의 시리얼 드라마는 단일 핵사건의 분화를 통해 서사의 수직적 확장이 일어나고, 유사한 구조의 핵사건이 연속적으로 반복되면서 서사의 수평적 확장이 일어난다. 인물을 중심으로 서사를 확장하는 유형의 시리얼 드라마는 이야기 생성의 잠재력이 풍부한 인물 집단을 주인공으로 내세우고, 개별 인물들의 이야기를 중심 사건과 연계시키는 방식을 통해 수직적 서사 확장이 일어난다. 이 유형에서 수평적 서사 확장은 주인공이 될 수 있는 인물 집단의 지속적인 추가와 인물 관계의 중첩을 통해 일어난다. 배경 공간을 중심으로 서사를 확장하는 유형의 시리얼 드라마에서는 배경 공간이 인물의 행위를 촉발하는 기제로 기능하며 행위 공간을 탐색하며 숨겨진 공간을 발견해나감에 따라 서사가 전개되며 수직적 확장이 일어난다. 이 유형에서 수평적 서사 확장은 인물에게 또 다른 행위를 촉발할 수 있는 잠재성을 가진 새로운 공간으로 이동하면서 일어난다. 이상의 유형 분류 과정을 바탕으로 각 유형에서 공통적으로 적용되는 시리얼 드라마의 서사 확장 원리를 알 수 있다. 첫 번째는 정형화되어 있지 않고 언제든지 또 다른 서사 조합의 구성 요소로 변모할 수 있는 서사 요소의 개별성이 강화된 것이다. 두 번째는 지속적인 긴장감을 형성하는 서스펜스가 구현될 수 있는 복잡한 서사 구성이다. 세 번째는 기존 서사에 또 다른 서사가 유입 될 수 있는 경로를 확대하는 개방적인 서사 전개 방식이다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 시리얼 드라마의 서사 구조 분석을 통해 서사 구조의 측면에서 디지털 스토리텔링의 속성을 함의하고 있는 시리얼 드라마의 서사 확장 원리를 밝히고자 했다. 이 같은 논의는 디지털 패러다임 속에서 올드 미디어 콘텐츠 진화 양상의 한 단면을 고찰하고 있다는 점과 시즌제 시스템에 적합한 국내 드라마 서사를 구성하는 데 있어서 전범(典範)이 될 수 있는 미국 시리얼 드라마의 서사 확장 구조와 원리를 밝히고 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 뉴미디어 시대의 다양한 대중문화예술 장르가 보여주는 각기 다른 방식의 서사적 변주 속에서 TV드라마 서사는 디지털의 속성을 수용하고 변하는 과정을 통해 뉴미디어 시대의 대중성을 확보하고 있다.
