In the twenty-first century, development of the nation's cultural elements and designing of high value-added products are being demanded as a part of the national enterprise. To achieve this end, the people engaging in creative and imaginative activities are confronted with the task of developing elements of our nation's traditional culture and creating a new culture by combining them with modern design. Also in the field of fashion, efforts are required for the integration of the Korean traditional motifs into modern costumes design and for their progress and inheritance. Traditional Korean drama mask is a formative image through which the traditional life of the olden days may be glimpsed. Diverse emotional aspects of the commoners depicted on these masks such as joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure renders the masks motifs worthy of integration into costumes. Furthermore, the fact that the Korean drama masks and costumes share a common significance in the respect that the former was used to hide one's face just as the latter was handed down through time as a means to conceal one's body provides another cause for this attempt to integrate these masks into costumes. Korean embroidery, utilized as a means to express the motif of traditional Korean drama mask, features three-dimensional spatiality achieved by the combination of individual floss to form facets and exclusivity imbued by the gradation effect of colors and sheen, qualities that allow the makers to display their intentions and expressional methods with a great degree of freedom. We hereby intend to generate a creative fashion design by embroidering costumes with a simplified motif of the formative quality of traditional Korean drama masks in a repetitive arrangement or intersection. This research intends to integrate humorous expressions and formative images of Korean drama masks, which offers a peek at the traditional Korean beauty and ideas, into costume design by utilizing various techniques of Korean embroidery, thereby ultimately aiming to articulate the harmony between our country's traditional sense of beauty and its modern counterpart. This research was first performed by establishing the concept and history of traditional Korean drama masks through literature reviews. Also the Hahoe Byulsingut (a shamanistic ritual performed at Hahoe village in Andong) Mask Dance, from which originated the traditional Korean drama masks, was studied for its plot and the six characters which appear according to each themes presented in the play. Based upon these characters, we examined the regional characteristics of traditional Korean masks and the aspects of development for the characters which became progressively transfigured in accordance to the said characteristics. Through this we were able to deduce the 8 persons employed in the making of the play. In addition, previous examples of integrating traditional Korean drama masks into costumes and design products were collectively analyzed for diverse methods to apply the masks in design expressions. Furthermore, Korean embroidery techniques were reviewed to examine the definition, characteristics, and history of Korean embroidery, through which we could gain an insight into the tradition of Korean embroidery. The types and techniques of Korean embroidery were also investigated to establish a theory on the expression techniques in order to eliminate any difficulties that might be presented for the expression of traditional Korean drama masks through embroidery techniques in producing actual works. The previous cases of Korean embroidery utilized in modern fashion designs were studied as well in order to seek ways to apply Korean embroidery. Upon the basis of the theoretical backgrounds discussed above, 8 pieces of costumes that make use of the characteristics of traditional Korean drama masks and the decorative expression techniques of modern embroidery were actually produced. The following conclusions were reached through this process: Firstly, the eight characters Chui-bal-li, Hal-mi (old woman), Om-joong (poxed monk), Meok-joong (black monk), No-seung (old monk), So-moo (little female-shaman), Mal-thuk-gi, and yangban (traditional aristocrat of dynastic Korea), which assume ritualistic, ceremonial, and satiric characteristics according to the themes of traditional Korean drama masks, were used as motifs in costumes to design concise patterns to produce costumes with modern images that are leavened with the traditional sense of beauty. Secondly, the characteristic personalities of the traditional Korean drama masks were magnified, and the traditional images were captured from humorous facial expressions that convey laughter, anger, inarticulacy, and sadness. These images were expressed in designs with the eyes, the nose, and the mouth as the centerpieces. This rendering process of motifs from humorous and satirical images depicting our ancestors' various emotions enable a creative design effect to be produced. Thirdly, to utilize and to imbue exclusiveness to the sense of spontaneous popularity found in traditional Korean drama masks in costume designs, Korean embroidery techniques were applied. Of these, the ja-ryeon-su technique (similar to long and short stitch in Western embroidery) was used and was found to be especially effective in expressing three-dimensional structures through the gradation of colors, which is achieved through the overall blending of individual floss. Fixation of special vinyl floss through jing-geum-su technique (similar to coating stitch in Western embroidery) endowed a sense of depth equivalent to the thickness of the floss on the fabric. Yi-eum-su technique (similar to outline stitch in Western embroidery) was used to express the eyebrows and wrinkles on the masks, while techniques such as pyeong-su , sasun pyeong-su (similar to satin stitch in Western embroidery), jeom-su (similar to running stitch in Western embroidery), sal-al-su (similar to seed stitch in Western embroidery), guk-hwa-su (similar to lazy daizy application stitch in Western embroidery), and ban-gwan-su (similar to running application stitch in Western embroidery)were used to describe the skin texture of the masks, deriving a new modelling effect. Fourthly, in order to effectively express the bumpy three-dimensional feeling displayed by the traditional Korean drama masks, viscose rayon, specialized vinyl floss, and specialized glittering floss of varying thickness were used. Especially, viscose rayon is superior to silk in its diversity of colors and sheen despite being thicker than the latter. It also enables a more effective expression of the exclusiveness of hand embroidery in the works. Lastly, this research was limited by the small number of available previous studies to be used as literature materials. Also, previous cases in which traditional Korean drama masks were applied in costume designs were rare. Therefore, it is our wish that the artistic and traditional values of traditional Korean drama masks and the artistry which Korean embroidery techniques are capable of expressing will be integrated into modern costume design in various ways to enable a more progressed research in the future.-
