수제(手製) 메탈패브릭을 이용한 섬유디자인

Abstract

21세기의 디자인은 빠른 속도의 변화와 함께 기존의 틀을 깨는 다양한 시도나 여러 요소의 융합 등을 통해 새로운 것을 끊임없이 추구하고 있으며, 고부가가치(高附加價値)의 창출과 더불어 차별화된 경향으로 나타난다. 단지 생산만을 위한 디자인에서 벗어나 생산에서 소비를 이끄는 조력자의 역할로서, 소비자의 필요뿐만 아니라 감성을 만족시키는 대중적인 트렌드(trend)를 이끌어 내기도 하고 순수예술과의 만남 등의 다양한 문화적 영역으로 확대되는 것이 특징이다. 현대의 다양한 문화영역 가운데 국가를 대표하는 음식문화는 그 국가의 자연적인 배경의 영향을 기본으로 하여 그 민족이 거쳐 온 사회·문화적인 영향을 통해 형성된다. 한국음식 역시 단순히 먹기 위한 것 이전에 우리나라의 역사·전통·철학이 깃든 또 하나의 문화이며 현대사회의 다양한 분야에서 트렌드로써도 그 가치를 인정받고 있으나, 현대 섬유디자인의 주제로서는 아직 개발 단계에 있다. 본 연구는 섬유디자인의 분야에서 거의 다루어지지 않았던 한국음식을 주제로 그 조형적 가치와 주제로서의 개발 가능성을 탐구하기 위한 연구에서 비롯되었으며, 연구과정 중 한국음식인 냉면의 디자인연구를 통해 금속 와이어(wire)를 이용한 ‘수제(手製) 메탈패브릭’을 제작하게 되었다. 작품의 주요소재인 와이어는 강도와 내구성이 뛰어나고 빛에 의한 광택과 반사광으로 인해 특유의 주목성을 갖으며 과학기술의 발달로 다양한 굵기와 색상의 제품으로 개발되었다. 본 연구자는 머리카락보다도 얇고 미세한 굵기의 와이어를 하나의 섬유로 보고, 금속특유의 차갑고 기계적인 특성을 비제직(Non-Woven)개념의 섬유표현기법인 알긴산비닐(alginate foil)과 머신스티치(machine stitch)를 이용하여 부드러운 패브릭으로 변화시키고자 하였다. 작품의 표현에 있어서는 연구자의 독특한 조형세계를 추상적으로 표현하는 것에 초점을 두었으며, 제작된 수제 메탈패브릭을 이용한 다기능(多技能)적 아이템으로 작품을 완성하였다. 본 연구의 내용 및 연구방법은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국음식의 문화적 특징과 조형적 특징을 조사하고, 다양한 시각적요소와 국내외의 인지도를 갖춘 냉면과 비빔밥을 선정하여 조형적 특징을 구체적으로 탐구하였다. 둘째, 추상미술의 개념과 음식을 주제로 한 다양한 국내외 작품사례를 알아보고, 작품제작을 위해 주재료인 와이어와 주된 표현기법인 머신스티치 등을 조사하였다. 셋째, 냉면과 비빔밥의 조형성연구 및 작품계획표를 중심으로 디자인연구를 실시하였다. 와이어와 알긴산 비닐을 이용한 메탈패브릭의 개발을 중심으로, 리버스 아플리케(reverse applique)의 입체적 표현과 믹스드미디어(mixed media) 아플리케·플리츠(pleats)를 응용한 독자적인 표현기법을 연구하였다. 넷째, 작품의 디자인 스케치와 샘플 제작 및 수정·보완을 통한 결과물로, 냉면을 주제로 한 메탈패브릭 작품 6점과 비빔밥을 주제로 한 다기능 액세서리 10점을 제작하였다. 이러한 연구과정을 통하여 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국음식은 다채로운 색상과 함께 세부 모양·전체적 형태·질감 등의 조형적 특징과 개인의 추억이나 대중적인 공감대 형성 등의 감성적 특징을 갖는다. 또한 한국음식을 비롯한 다양한 종류의 음식은 디자인요소로써 무한한 가치를 가지고 있으므로, 음식을 주제로 한 섬유디자인은 계속적으로 연구·개발되어야 할 과제이다. 둘째, 독자적인 표현기법을 통해 완성된 메탈패브릭은, 시간과 노력을 요하는 수작업을 통해 대량생산이 아닌 최고의 퀄리티(quality)로 직결되는 수공예의 가치를 지닌다. 셋째, 한국음식 특유의 ‘감성적 특징’과 수제 메탈패브릭의 ‘예술적 특징’, 사용자의 의사반영이 가능한 ‘기능적 특징’이 결합된 본 연구의 결과물은 ‘21세기 디자인의 특징을 살린 고부가가치의 섬유디자인개발’이라는 목표에 적합한 연구였다.;21st century's design is changing at a fast pace and seek new things constantly through various attempts and blended components. It is representing the differentiated tendency as well as the creation of higher value-added. As a supporter, not just to design for production but to pull the consumption from the production, it is distinguished by the extension to various culture area such as the meeting of the pure arts and the others and the leading to the customer satisfied popular trend. Among the various cultural field in modern, nation representing food culture is created based on the effects of nation's natural background by the social and cultural effects that the people in the nation undergo. Korean food is also not just for eating but for another culture that contains the history, tradition and the philosophy in Korea. Also, it is recognized as the trend in various field in modern society but the modern textile design is awaiting to be developed. Korean food had been hardly used in the field of textile design but is used as the subject in this study. It was originated in the study that was searching for the possibility of development as the formative value and the subject. During such study, 'handmade metal fabric' was made using metal wire through the design development of Naengmyun. The wire, the main material in such work, has a great strength and durability. Moreover, it is developed as different kinds of thickened and colored products with the development of scientific technology. Having the gloss by the lights and the reflected light is receiving attention by people. The researcher saw such wire with a hair-like minuscule thickness as a textile and tried to change it to a soft fabric using Alginate foil which is the textile representing technique of non-woven and the machine stitch from the cold and mechanic characteristic. For the expression of work, abstractive expression of the inimitable formative world was focused and completed the work with the multi-functional item using handmade metal fabric. The followings are the findings and the methods. Firstly, researched for the cultural and formative characteristic of Korean food and chose Naeng-Myun and Bibimbab which has the various visual elements and the national/international name-recognition. Secondly, researched for the concepts of abstract art and the national/international examples focused on food. Also researched on the main material for production, wire, and the expression technique which is machine stitch. Thirdly, design development was done around the plasticity of Naeng-myun and Bibimbab and working-planner. Centering around the development of metal fabric using the wire and Alginated-foil, three-dimensional expression of reverse applique and independent expression technique using application of mixed media applique and pleats was researched. Fourthly, as the results through the design sketch of work, sample making, modification, complements, the 6 points for the metal fabric work on Naeng-myun theme and the 10 points for the multi-functional accessory on Bibimbab theme were produced. The followings are the results from such research processes. Firstly, with the colorful Korean food has formative characteristic such as the detailed shape, overall form, texture etc and emotional formation such as individual memories, popular notice formation and etc. Also, different kinds of Food including Korean food has unlimited value as design components and so the textile design on food should be studied/developed constantly. Secondly, the completed metal-fabric through the independent expressing techniques has the handcrafted value with the time and effort needed handmade which is not a mass production but the best quality. Thirdly, the result of this study combining the Korean food's special 'emotional characteristic' and 'artistic characteristic' of the handmade metal fabric, user's will reflecting 'functional characteristic' was the suitable research for the goal of 'Higher value-added textile design development with characteristic of design in the 21st century.
