Play is a critical component of preschool children's development. Children with autism spectrum disorders have poor play skills, specially spontaneous symbolic play, which greatly affects their social inclusion. Reciprocal Imitation Training(RIT) is a naturalistic behavioral technique to be designed to reciprocal imitation of play action between adult and child. This intervention has been shown to increase symbolic play actions. This procedure includes contingent imitation, linguistic mapping, allowing child's choice of stimuli, direct reinforcement, modelling, play scaffolding instruction, using natural consequence, and direct prompting of the correct response. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of symbolic play intervention strategy incorporating Reciprocal Imitation Training on spontaneous symbolic play and peer interaction of young children with autism spectrum disorders at inclusive play setting. Multiple baseline design across subjects is used to analyze the intervention effects in this study. Participants were three children with autism spectrum disorders and nine typically developing peers aged 5 and 7 years. All children with autism spectrum disorder rarely exhibited spontaneous symbolic play and peer interaction before RIT intervention. This study conducted baseline, RIT intervention and inclusive play with peers, generalization, and maintenance. All sessions is videotaped. During baseline period, the inclusive play session was implemented in free symbolic play situations without intervention. In processing intervention, RIT intervention was implemented 3 or 4 times a week in the context of ongoing symbolic play interaction between researcher and child. Before each intervention, observation sessions were implemented for data collection at inclusive play setting. After the intervention was over, generalization effects to novel play partners were evaluated in inclusive play setting as the baseline condition. After four weeks from the ending of intervention were completed, maintenance effects were evaluated in same setting as the baseline condition. 10-second partial-interval recording was used to measure spontaneous symbolic play and peer interaction for 10 minutes in inclusive playtime according to the definition of targets. And the percentages of occurrence were obtained. The results of this study were as follows: First, after symbolic play training using RIT, all of the children made notable increases in spontaneous symbolic play actions. Especially, 2 participants with autism spectrum disorder produced dramatic gains in spontaneous symbolic play actions at levels similar to that of peer-norm. All of the children generalized their spontaneous symbolic play actions to new play partners. And this increases were maintained when intervention was withdrawn. Second, after symbolic play training using RIT, all of the children produced meaningful increases in peer interactions. All of the children generalized their peer interactions to new play partners. And this increases were maintained when intervention was withdrawn. The findings show that RIT intervention was effective in increasing spontaneous symbolic play and peer interactions of the children with autism spectrum disorder. Improving the play skills of young children with autism spectrum disorders is very important for the successful inclusion. This study suggests RIT is successful intervention technique in promoting spontaneous symbolic play behavior of the children with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, peer interactions can be improved through RIT play intervention. The implication of RIT intervention to increase spontaneous symbolic play and peer interactions of the children with autism spectrum disorders is also discussed.;놀이는 유아의 생활 자체로서 주변 세계에 대한 학습과 사회화의 기본 수단이다.
