Abstract

Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) was an English-born composer whose activities extended from early to mid-20th century and was the representative musician who developed vocal music of the 20th century. He was so multitalented that he showed his distinguished musical talent in many kinds of music apart from vocal music, including opera. His musical style, using various patterns of the 20th century, reveals a compromising tendency and he devised his own unique musical language by harmonizing various musical patterns of traditional English music with the musical taste of English people. This thesis had as its aim finding out the generalized characteristics of his vocal music by studying the song-cycle [Winter Words] op. 52 out of his vocal works numbering almost 80. [Winter Words], a song-cycle using & poems by Thomas Hardy, uses free-styled melodies, frequent 4th interval relationships in wide compass and jumping tones, and recitativo style with declamatory style which seems to be due to the influence of Purcell. For chords, patterns of minor 2nd interval made by adding triads to the intervals of 3rd, 7th and 9th, or using added notes is encountered frequently. Although major and minor scales, and modes. pentatonic and wholetone scales are used, frequent use of accidentals and chromatic scales makes the tonality obscure. For the organization of each piece, rather than using many new patterns, one or two phrases are maintained and developed, becoming an important characteristic. The writer studied the generalized characteristics of his vocal music through analysis of [Winter Words], in which Britten showed both the characteristics of 20th century music and his own unique musical style.;Benjamin Britten(1913-1976)은 영국태생으로 20세기 초반과 중반에 걸쳐 활동한 작곡가이며, 17세기 Henry Purcell(1659-1695)이후 영국 최고의 작곡가 중 한 사람이자 20세기의 성악음악을 발전시킨 대표적 인물이다. 그는 다재다능한 음악가로 오페라를 비롯한 성악음악뿐 아니라 여러 분야의 음악에서 그의 뛰어난 음악성을 발휘하였다. 그의 음악양식은 20세기의 다양한 기법들을 사용하여 절충적인 경향을 나타내고 있으며, 특히 영국의 전통음악 위에 영향 받은 여러 음악양식을 영국의 음악기호에 알맞게 융합시켜 자신만의 독창적인 음악어법을 개발해 냈다. 본 논문에서는 Britten의 80여곡에 달하는 많은 성악작품들 중 연가곡 [Winter Words] Op.52를 중심으로 그의 성악음악의 일반적인 특징들을 연구하고자 한다. [Winter Words]는 Thomas Hardy의 8개의 시에 붙인 연가곡으로 선율은 자유로운 유형을 사용하였고, 넓은 음역자 도약음정에 특히 4도관계를 빈번하게 사용하고 있으며 또한 Purcell의 영향으로 보이는 recitativo 양식과 낭창기법을 사용하고 있다. 화성은 주로 3도, 7도, 9도의 음정안에 3화음을 쌓거나 첨가음을 사용하여 단2도 음정을 이루는 유형이 많으며, 조성은 장조, 단조와 선법, 5음음계, 온음음계 등을 사용하고 있으나 때때로 임시표와 반음계 사용으로 조성을 모호하게 만들기도 한다. 각곡에서의 구성에 있어서는 새로운 음형들을 많이 사용하기 보다 한 두개의 phrase가 지속되며 이것이 계속적으로 발전해 가는것을 이작품의 특징으로 들 수 있다. 논자는 [Winter Words]의 분석을 통하여 그의 성악음악의 일반적 특징들을 살펴보았으며, 이 작품에서 Britten은 20세기 음악의 특징 뿐 아니라 그의 독창적인 음악양식과 특히 시와 음악의 친밀성을 이 작품을 통해 잘 나타내주고 있다.
