누레예프 고전발레 작품의 예술적 재의미에 관한 연구

Abstract

21세기에 접어들어 예술은 복잡한 사회와 급변하는 문화적 환경을 배경으로 급진적인 발전을 거듭하고 있으며, 이러한 시대적 흐름 속에서 발레 예술은 전통에 대한 새로운 인식과 개혁을 통해 현시대적 감각과 지성에 맞는 혁신적인 발레를 구현하기 시작했다. 이에 많은 현대의 안무가들은 고전발레의 경직되고 고착화된 표현방법에서 벗어나 그들만의 독창적인 재해석을 통해 표현성을 더욱 확대시키려는 시도를 끊임없이 하고 있다. 그 대표적 인물의 한 사람으로서 루돌프 누레예프(Rudolf Nureyev)는 다른 남성 무용수들과 비교할 수 없는 화려한 테크닉과 표현력 그리고 작품의 해석력을 겸비한 타고난 무용수이자 안무가였다. 그는 일생을 오로지 춤에 전념하고 헌신함으로서 작품을 통해 발레 기교와 구성의 다양성, 그리고 폭넓은 표현성을 제공하여 많은 관객을 감동시키는 자신만의 고유한 춤을 창조하였고 이론적인 연구와 논리적인 분석력을 통해 작품을 독창적인 관점에서 재해석함으로서 설득력을 갖춘 현대적 감각의 고전발레 작품을 탄생시킨 진보적인 안무가였다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 누레예프의 작품 <Romeo and Juliet(1995)>, <Sleeping Beauty(2000)>, <Swan Lake(2005)>을 선정하여 작품 전개와 인물묘사, 음악의 사용과 움직임의 구성 면에서 분석하여 고전발레 작품에 대한 그의 재해석 관점의 시각과 표현능력을 연구하고 그의 예술적 특성을 살펴봄으로서 누레예프 안무 작품의 재해석 의미를 고찰해 보는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 문헌연구를 중심으로 고전발레의 역사적 배경과 형식의 특징, 누레예프 생애에 걸친 작품 활동과 업적을 살펴본 후, 위의 세 작품을 분석한 결과 다음과 같다. 첫째, 작품 전개와 인물묘사에 있어서 누레예프는 주로 여성 주역 무용수에게 초점이 맞추어졌던 원작에 반해 남성과 여성 주역 무용수의 역할을 동등하게 부여하여 주인공으로서 남성 무용수의 주체성을 확립시켰다. 또한 현 시대에 맞는 진보된 캐릭터로서 인물묘사를 더하였을 뿐만 아니라 작품에 설득력을 갖추기 위해 원작에 없었던 새로운 장면을 포함시키는 등 논리적이고 극적인 동기를 제공하기 위해 암시적이고 상징적인 연출을 고안해내었다. 둘째, 음악의 사용과 움직임의 구성에 있어서는 철저한 음악의 사전 조사와 분석을 통하여 음악을 재사용하거나 편성하여 그에 따른 동작을 새롭게 구성함으로서 음악과 동작의 일체를 추구하였다. 동작 구성에 있어서는 신체의 순수한 움직임을 강조하고 폭넓은 과감한 표현을 위해 창의적인 발레 스텝을 개발하였다. 또한 남성과 여성 무용수의 불균형을 시정하고 군무 구성에서 남성 군무와 여성 군무를 따로 분리하여 남성과 여성을 대표하는 특질을 살리는 다양하고 차별화된 테크닉과 형식으로 구성하여 작품의 수준을 높였다. 이와 같이 누레예프는 작품을 이끌어가는 인물들을 자신만의 독특한 관점에서 재해석하여 작품에 논리적인 설득력이 돋보이는 연출을 하였고, 동시대 문화를 반영하는 현대적 감각을 갖춘 고전발레를 탄생시켰다. 뿐만 아니라 발레 스텝의 한계점을 극복하기 위한 시도로서 발레 고유의 특질에 다양한 춤의 요소들을 결합시킨 혁신적인 스텝을 개발하여 현대 발레의 발전에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 이러한 연구를 통해 누레예프의 예술적 특성을 통한 안무 작품의 재해석 특징으로는 작품의 재해석에 따른 독창적인 전개, 남성 무용수 활동 영역의 확대, 동작구성 과 장면연출 범위의 확장, 군무연출의 다양화 등으로 집약할 수 있으며, 이것은 발레 역사에서 고전발레 가치를 재인식하고 다양하고 새로운 시각의 발레창작의 활성화에 기여할 것이다. 오늘날 무용예술은 다양한 춤의 어휘를 습득하고 융화시켜 장르의 구분을 넘어선 폭넓은 형태의 작품으로 탄생되고 있으며, 다소 위축되었던 고전발레는 다양한 해석으로 표현력을 강화시키려는 안무가들의 실험적인 작업과 노력에 의해 정형화된 체계에서 변모된 모습으로 대중들에게 다가가고 있다. 따라서 이러한 발레예술을 보존하고 계승하기 위해서는 현시대적 감각과 사회, 문화적 요구에 부응하는 고전발레 작품의 실험적인 연구와 안무활동이 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.;Art has continued to undergo radical change and advancement in a complex and rapidly-changing environment in the 21st century, and in this trend of the times, ballet art embodied innovative forms that suit the contemporary sentiment and intelligence through the new recognition and reform of tradition. As a result, many contemporary dancers attempted ceaselessly to shift from the rigid and stereotyped way of dance and expand the features of expression through their independent reinterpretation. One of the persons who stood at the center of such trend was Rudolf Nureyev, who was incomparable to any other male dancers in terms of his excellent technique, expression, and interpretation of works. He was entirely dedicated to dance throughout his life, and created his own distinctive dance that moved the heart of audience with his ballet technique, diversity of ballet dance structure, and extensive features of expression. Reinterpreting works from independent perspective based on his academic research and logical analysis, he was a progressive dancer who created classical ballet works of contemporary sophistication and appeal. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to review the artistic characteristics of Nureyev that were revealed in his works by analyzing <Swan Lake(1964)>, <Sleeping Beauty(1972)>, <Romeo and Juliet(1984)>, one of his works, from the standpoint of development of the work, depiction of characters, use of music, structure of motions, and researching on his viewpoint of reinterpretation and his ability of expression. For that, his artistic activities and achievements throughout his life were reviewed along with the historic background of classical ballet and its characteristics through the literature study, on which basis, the following findings were drawn from the analysis of the aforesaid three works: First, Nureyev added abundant emotional expression of characters in his works and detailed description of their psychology, escalating dramatic tension. And he focused on the depiction of image and mutual motivation in relation to the resulting relationship of characters in order to minimize unnatural presentation that had been overlooked in original works. In other words, he created implicit and symbolic representation by inserting new character or removed the existing character, depending on various reinterpretation of each work, and inserting new scene which did not exist in original work to increase the appeal, all of which were intended to provide logical and dramatic motivation. Second, Nureyev pursued the match between the music and motion by excerpting tunes used for other acts in original work through the thorough prior survey of music and analysis or restructuring existing tunes and reorganizing the motions accordingly. He put an emphasis on the pure physical motion of body and developed creative ballet step for bold expressions when organizing the motions. Unlike other dancers who emphasized the female group dance and the challenging and highly sophisticated techniques of group dance and the leading role, he organized male group dance and female group dance separately, raising the level of work through diverse and differentiated technique and forms. In that way, Nureyev presented his works with more logistical power and appeal through the reinterpretation of leading characters in works based on his own distinctive perspective, and created classical dance with contemporary sophistication that reflects contemporary culture. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in the advancement of contemporary ballet by developing innovative steps that combine many different elements of various dances with unique characteristics of ballet, an attempt to overcome the limit of ballet step. Today, dance art has been evolving into wide-ranging form of art that goes beyond the genre by incorporating and assimilating vocabularies of various dances, and pursues comprehensive ballet that is blended well with music, fine art, and literature. Classical ballet, which remained somewhat low profile in the aforesaid context, has shifted from the stereotyped form and is getting closer to the public, bolstered by the experimental works and efforts of dancers who try to strengthen the expressive feature of classical ballet through various interpretations. Therefore, experimental researches and works on classical ballet need to continue in a way that may suit the contemporary sentiment and meet the requirement of society and culture, ultimately preserving that form of ballet art and passing it down to future generations.
