Georges Bizet의 가곡에 나타난 이국적 요소에 관한 연구

Abstract

Georges Bizet(1838-1875) is one of the most representative French composers in the late 19th century. Although he did not leave a large number of works due to his early death at the age of 37, Bizet's operas, strongly exotic in style and character, are recognized for its musical excellence, and acclaimed by many music lovers to this day. Although not as widely known as his operatic works, Bizet's mélodies also wonderfully capture and display his musical characteristics, and are originative in its musicality and mysterious in atmosphere. Bizet's lyrical songs, influenced by Gounod, his teacher at Paris Conservatory of Music, are known for its charm and beauty. But in this research, the attention is given to Bizet's songs in exotic style, which are characterized by splendid local colors and innovative and unique melody, thus, are outstandingly attractive and captivating. <Adieux de l'hôtesse arabe> is one of his representative songs, and Bizet uses the augmented 2nd of the Arabic scale, and expresses the sorrow of parting through minor chords and melody. In <Ouvre ton cœur>, a mélodie in bolero rhythm, ostinato accompaniment provides the rhythmic pattern, and the trills help create and capture the exotic colors of Spain. In <Le matin>, Bizet uses the folk rhythm of Provence in repetition, in order to bring out the bright and brilliant local flavors, and main melody is used again in 『L'Arlésienne』(1872) which is the representing orchestral suite of him. In <Tarentelle>, Bizet takes after the fast and passionate dance of Naples, 'Tarantella,' and depicts cheerfulness by frequent use of temporary marks, dissonant chords and their resolutions. As mentioned above, the characteristics of Bizet's mélodies in exotic style can be summarized as follows: 1) ostinato accompaniment, which sets the mood for the entire song through the repetition of the unique rhythms borrowed from musical traditions of diverse regions; 2) melody, which avoids the monotony typical of strophic songs through the use of ornamentations, trills, and long melismas; 3) minor scales and chords, including the Arabic scale and chromatic scale; 4) the use of dissonant chords and their resolutions, which express sensuality. In conclusion, Bizet effectively uses such exotic elements in his music, and succeeds in creating mélodies that are full of passion and vivacity, and, uniquely his.;조르쥬 비제(Georges Bizet, 1838-1875)는 19세기 중후반 프랑스를 대표하는 작곡가이다. 37세의 젊은 나이에 세상을 떠났기에 작품 수는 많지 않으나 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 음악, 특히 강렬한 이국적 색채를 드러내는 그의 오페라는 작품성을 인정받으며 현재까지도 큰 사랑을 받고 있다. 오페라만큼 잘 알려져 있지는 않지만, 비제의 음악적 특성이 잘 드러나는 그의 가곡은 매우 독창적이며 신비로운 분위기를 가진다. 파리 음악원의 스승이었던 구노의 영향을 받은 서정적인 가곡들 외에도 화려한 지방색과 혁신적이고 독특한 선율을 가진 이국적 스타일의 가곡들은 특히 매력적이다. 증 2도의 아라비아 음계(Arabic scale)를 사용한 <Adieux de l'hôtesse arabe아랍여인의 이별>는 그의 대표적인 가곡으로 단조적인 성격의 화성과 선율을 통해 이별의 슬픔을 표현하고 있다. 또한 볼레로 리듬의 가곡 <Ouvre ton cœur그대 마음 열어주오>는 오스티나토 형태의 반주부가 리듬감을 주며, 꾸밈음을 사용하여 스페인의 화려한 이국적 색채를 느끼게 한다. 비제의 대표적인 관현악 모음곡 『L'Arlésienne아를의 여인』(1872)에도 쓰였던 <Le matin아침>의 프로방스 민요 리듬과 주요 선율은 곡 전체에 지속적으로 반복되어 화려한 지방색을 보여주고 있으며, 나폴리의 빠르고 열광적인 춤곡인 ‘Tarantella'의 리듬을 차용한 <Tarentelle타란텔라>는 잦은 임시표, 그리고 불협화음의 사용과 해결을 통해 경쾌한 느낌을 표현하고 있다. 위의 가곡들에서 알 수 있듯이 비제의 이국적 가곡의 특징으로는 여러 나라에서 가져온 독특한 리듬의 반복으로 곡 전체의 분위기를 주도하는 오스티나토형 반주부, 장식음과 꾸밈음, 긴 멜리즈마 등을 통해 유절가곡의 단조로움을 탈피한 선율, 단조를 바탕으로 아라비아 음계, 반음계 등을 사용하여 이국적 색채를 강조한 화성, 그리고 관능미가 느껴지는 불협화음의 사용과 해결 등을 들 수 있다. 이렇듯 비제는 개성 넘치는 이국적 요소들을 적절히 사용하여 그만의 독특하고 생동감 넘치는 가곡들을 작곡하였다.
