Abstract
In this thesis, focused on Jongmyo Jeryeak(宗廟祭禮樂), Royal Ancestral Ritual Music, I have studied about music books or music scores with various notations. At the same time, with recorded materials, I have compared the music with the books or scores. The results are as follow: First, Jongmyo Jeryeak(宗廟祭禮樂), Royal Ancestral Ritual Music, was initially created in Joseon Dynasty's 4th King, Sejong's reign, for being used in royal palace banquet, and then it was modified as suitable for the ceremony under Sejo's reign, which has been handed down to the present fover 500years. In 16th century, the music had been halted by wars or civil-wars for decades but after the national crisis, fortunately the government decided not to change the procedure of ceremony or the contents of the music so that without large alteration the music and the ceremony could be handed down entirely. Second, from 『Sejosillokakbo(世祖實錄樂譜)』to the present, there are lots of musics books or music score for the music over 500years. and the music was written in various notations like jeongganbo(井間譜), yuljabo(律字譜) and the staff notation. Jeongganbo(井間譜) was created by the King Sejong the Great. Yuljabo was in Koryo(高麗) Dynasty in 12th century and the staff notation was introduced in the early 20th century. Music books written in jeongganbo(井間譜)-notation handed down from 『Sejongsillok(世宗實錄)』 to 『Gukakjeonjip vol.18(國樂全集 第18集)』 by the National Center for the Korean Traditional Performing Arts(NCKTPA) for the people who want to study the traditional music. In Jeongganbo-notation in a row there are 32jeonggans(units) in the reign of King Sejong the Great. And then in the reign of King Sejo there are 16jeonggans(units). Now in a row there are 20jeonggans(units). Yulajabo has no units for beats and only has Chinese character for pitches. Now Yulajbo is handed down in 『akjangyouram(樂章要覽)』, 『Piri Gueum jeongakbo(피리口音正樂譜)』 and 『pirijeongakbo(피리正樂譜)』. The staff notation is shown on 『akakbuoseonbo(雅樂部五線譜)』in 1920s, 『Hangukeumak vol. 11(韓國音樂 11集)』 in 1974 and 『Hangukeumak vol. In those music books, there are no signal for tempo. At the music books by the staff notation, there is a signal for tempo in 『akakbu oseonbo(雅樂部五線譜)』, 『Hanguk eumak vol. But in 『Hangukeumak vol. 35(韓國音樂 35集)』 there are many signals for each piece of the music. On the names of each piece, after war against Japanese, in 17th century a song was added to praise King Seonjo(宣祖) named Junggwang(重光) and then yonggwang(龍光) and Jeongmyung(貞明) is united to one song and this piece called Yonggwangjeongmyung(龍光貞明). And on the reign of King Youngjo, the gevernment decided to prohibit any change of the songs and procedure of ceremony. After that under Japanese colonial period, Japanese government compelled to change the name of Yonggwangjeongmyung(龍光貞明) to Yeolgwangjeongmyung(烈光貞明). In 2000s, after independence of Korea, the name was taking back. It shows cultural invade is not easy to be corrected in a short time. At the 8th piece of Jeongdaeup(定大業), the name is ‘寵緌’. Its name is confused by NCKTPA because of 『Gangheejajeon(康熙字典)』 by Chinese in 18th century. In this Chinese- Korean Dictionary it is pronounced 'Chonsoo' but old dictionaries 『Yoohap(類合)』 or 『Sinjeungyoohap(新增類合)』 by Korean scholar in 16th century it is pronounced 'Chongyoo'. The pronunciation is a matter of choice. But I think the tradition of pronunciation is more important than the dictionary by Chinese At the start and ending of the music, the documentation about start and ending is not revealed before 『Hangukeumak vol. 11(韓國音樂 11集)』 and 『Gukakjeonjip vol. As notioned above, there are mixed notation by needs in the books. So mixed contents could make difficulties for people who is analyzing the music. Third, at the change about music, extreme change is shown at Jeonpyeheuimoon(奠幣熙文). In the changes of times, tempo of Jeonpyeheuimoon is quite slowed by three times over. In 1920s it took only 1 minute 30seconds but in 2006 it took 9minutes long. And ornaments in this piece are enlarged and weave into main melody so the roles of ornaments are changed. Before 1970s, sacred songs are taking main parts for the music but now piri has taken leading role. In 11pieces of Botaepyung(保太平) there are some changes about inserted tone(間音) between the same tones. The inserted tone is shortened in duration on Jipnyunng(輯寧), Yonggwangjeongmyung(龍光貞明), Junggwang(重光) and Yeoksung(繹成). And the same phenomena are shown in 3pieces of Jungdaeup(定大業): Tagjeong(濯征), Singjung(神定) and Jeongse(靖世). Even though these phenomena are shown in some pieces, the main melody line or music skeleton is not changed largely. In general, tempo of the music is slowed as shown in the recorded materials. Fourth, on the comparison the recorded materials with the music books, there are lots of differences. For example, in heuimoon on with 『aakbu oseonbo(雅樂部五線譜)』, Heuimoon in is similar to Jeonpyeheuimoon in the presents because of tempo and by enlarged ornaments. And in Doggyoung(篤慶) and Tagjeong(濯征), there are difference between characters of pitches and real pitches. This differences between character of pitches and real pitch have to be studied furthermore. In 1950s, music book named 『Giakbo(器樂譜)』 has a role for music score of Jongmyojeryeak with percussions like pyunjong(編鐘), pyunggyoung(編磬), drums(鼓), and wind instruments. There are revealed some inserted tones between the same tones connected in a phrase. And in Jeongdaeup, same characters with different pitch are indicated by symbol. In 1970s, on 『Hangukeumak vol 11(韓國音樂 11集)』 by the staff notation, those pieces printed in duple meter but played in triple meter and there are many ornaments for wind instruments but not played at all now. In 2000s, on 『Hangukeumak vol.35(韓國音樂 35集)』 those pieces are written in triple meter and tempos are shown at each piece so this volume is quite similar to music now. But many musicians don't use this volume because they prefer yuljabo or jeongganbo to the staff notation. Instead of the staff notation, the musicians use their own music books for their instruments. And their music books are written in the traditional notation on triple meter. They use music books by the traditional notation like their ancestors. As we can see, Jongmyo Jeryeak - Important Intangible Cultural Properties No. 1 - was selected as 'Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity', with Jongmyo Jerye, Important Intangible Cultural Properties No. 56. We must preserve this music well and must deliver to our descendants without damages.
