반복적 구성을 통한 시각적 표현연구

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to develop the work of art through exploring how the use of repetition creates visual impacts and what significance it has to it. During the postgraduate course I made several trips in and out of Korea, and produced pieces of art work based on the impressive sights or images that inspired me throughout the trip. For me, traveling functions as a significant instrument to experience the new world. For artists who are engaged in creative activities, it is their instinct to chase after originalities. Having a new experience at a new place encourages them to keep fresh minds and motivates to approach visualizing the new thoughts into pieces of artwork. In the process of composing the inspiring sights to a picture I have introduced a formative principle which refers to repetition. In this context, repetition implies an ordinary. A Part of the world that I have encountered for the first time is also a slice of an ordinary. The sky above us, the earth we stand on and all the creatures and cultures were not built in a single day. They are the products of history which continues transforming themselves today and tomorrow. Ordinary days are considered as tedious and meaningless repetition but the slight transformation in each day brings a new result as a consequence. This result as a whole certainly has a significant impact as it impresses people in an artistic way. Repetition is one of the basic formative principles that create a visual symmetry. Through experimenting the repetitive composition on a flat surface I have achieved such visual impacts; movements, symmetry, firmness. Repetition creates rhythmwhich could be applied to shake people's emotions. Moreover, its stability is a key element of symmetry. When myriads of objects are composed in a repetitive order they turn out to appear as one firm structure. However, when a single figure is plainly repeated, the picture could appear dull and fails to accomplish any visual expression. To avoid looking monotonous and to give a hint of dynamic to the repetition, I have applied variations in the objects size, and their positions and colors. Various patterns of repetition resulted in diverse visual impacts which then be structured to story telling illustrations. This study will be a starting point to initiate the process of developing my work further, and I will continue to examine the effect of repetition and its visual impactsthrough more journeys around the world.;인간은 삶을 살아가면서 자신이 겪은 소중한 순간을 머릿속에 오랫동안 기억하고 싶어 한다. 특히 아름다웠던 순간이나 경험은 삶의 큰 의미를 부여하고 싶은 충동을 느끼게 하여 사람들은 사진이나 글로서 그 순간을 저장한다. 그리고 이러한 추억을 가끔 돌이켜 봄으로써 자신을 뒤 돌아 보고 행복의 의미를 찾게 된다. 본인에게 있어서 여행의 경험은 새로운 세상과의 만남이라는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다. 일상에서 볼 수 없었던 새로운 풍경, 사람, 문화를 만날 때 인생의 큰 변화를 느끼게 되고 이러한 경험 중 아름다웠던 순간은 그림으로 남겨 다른 사람들과 공유하고 싶은 욕구를 느끼게 한다. 이에 본인은 여행에서 있었던 아름다웠던 경험을 작품화 하였다. 작품을 제작함에 있어 눈으로 본 것을 그대로 옮기는데 그치지 않고 여행에서 겪은 경험 중 인상 깊게 본 대상을 개체화 하여 반복적으로 구성하였다. 반복이라는 성질은 보편적인 자연 질서로서 안정적이며 조화로움을 표현하는데 기본이 된다고 할 수 있다. 본인은 여행에서 인상 깊게 보았던 대상을 화면 가득 반복적으로 표현하여 조화로움을 추구함과 동시 반복에 의미를 부여하였는데, 똑같은 개체가 반복되면 연속성이 생기고 하나의 큰 리듬으로 보여 진다. 이러한 리듬은 반복되어진 개체의 일상이 모여 만들어진 삶의 리듬을 의미한다. 리듬은 반복하는 방법에 따라 여러 가지 유형으로 표현될 수 있고 그 시각적 효과가 달라 이야기를 전달해야 하는 일러스트레이션에 반복적 구성이 한 형식이 될 가능성을 찾게 되었다. 본론에서는 본인의 작품 소재인 여행의 동기와 의미에 대해 서술하였고, 여행을 다니며 작업을 하였던 작가를 분석함으로써 본인의 작품과 비교하였다. 또 본인작품에서 나타난 반복적 구성에 대한 고찰로, 반복의 개념과 특징을 문헌자료를 통해 알아보고 선행적으로 반복을 사용한 작가를 분석하여 반복이 주는 시각적 조형성에 대해 연구하였다. 이러한 객관적 근거를 바탕으로 본인의 작품에서 나타난 반복의 의미와 시각적 효과에 대해 알아보았다. 시각적 효과는 본인의 연구작을 통하여 분석하고, 작품에서 반복을 사용한 방법에 따라 유형별로 분류하여 각각 특징에 대해 알아보았다. 마지막으로 실제 제작된 본인의 작품을 통하여 여행 일러스트레이션에서 반복적 구성이 어떻게 구현 되었고 어떠한 효과가 있는지 살펴보았다. 이러한 과정을 통하여 지금까지 작품의 표현형식과 의미에 대해 이론적으로 정리하여 지난 작업을 성찰하고 더 발전된 작업을 하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.
