‘시각적 표현 요소’로써 국기의 정의와 그에 따른 태극기의 표현 연구

Abstract

현대 시각디자인영역의 많은 부분에서 하나의 시각적 요소가 여러 가지로 확대되는 현상을 흔히 접할 수 있다. 기업의 CI, 아이콘(Icon), 국기. 광고, 심벌, 캐릭터 등을 하나의 '시각적 표현 요소'로 적용하여 표현이 가능하며, 이것은 또 다른 콘텐츠(Contents)로 자리 잡게 된다. 그 중에서도 국기는 기업의 CI나 광고, 심벌처럼 상업적으로 만들어진 콘텐츠가 아닌 한 나라를 상징하는 국가 아이콘으로서 강력한 상징성을 지니고 있으며, 다양한 시각디자인 영역 중 자발적으로 하나의 문화콘텐츠로 발전한 '시각적 표현 요소'이다. '시각적 표현 요소'로써 국기는 다양한 변이와 반복을 통해 특정한 상징과 의미를 지니고, 그 의미를 부여하는 다양한 의미체계 안에서 그것이 하나의 커뮤니케이션(Communication)의 도구로 발전한다. 국기는 한 국가를 상징하는 아이콘으로서 의미상으로는 국가를 대표하는 매개체이지만 현대 사회에서 국기는 국가적 상징과 보편적 문맥을 벗어나 문화 콘텐츠(Contents)로써 자리 잡게 되었다. 이러한 '시각적 표현 요소'로써 국기는 다양한 사례를 통해 접할 수 있으며, 본 연구에서는 그러한 사례를 분석하여 양상을 분류하여 보았으며, 우리나라의 국기인 태극기에의 적용함으로서 태극기가 지니고 있는 시각적 소재들을 다양하게 사용하는데 그 목적이 있다. 우리나라 국가상징인 태극기의 상징성은 어느 한 순간에 인위적으로 만들어 지는 것이 아니라 국가가 형성되어지는 오랜 세월을 거치면서 그 민족의 역사와 전통을 기반으로 국민적 공감대가 형성되어 만들어진 하나의 상징물이다. 또한 태극기는 조형적인 측면에서 단순하면서 명료한 요소들은 훌륭한 디자인 모티브가 될 수 있다. 미국의 성조기는 다양한 접근과 시도를 통해 미국을 대표하는 상징으로서 사회, 문화적으로 그 쓰임새가 널리 퍼져 있는 것에 비해, 태극기는 국가의 상징성을 높일 수 있는 좋은 시각 콘텐츠(Contents)임에도 불구하고, 그 쓰임새가 다양하지 못하다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 사례를 통해 추출한 양상을 '시각적 표현 요소'로써 태극기에 적용함으로써 시각디자인 분야에서 국기에 나타나는 현상의 특성을 제시하는 것은 의미 있는 접근이라 생각한다.;Defining National Flag as Visual Expression Element with Expression on Taeguekgi In modern visual design, visual elements are visually simplified and it contains specific meaning. Elements have specific meaning by itself, and they are repeated and changed as design content without changing the meaning. In visual design, meaning of elements change very often but some simplified and specified elements compose a big meaning as a whole which can be found very easily. This element can be found in C.I., icon, national flag, advertisement, and symbol character. Especially, C.I. or advertisement is created for business contents purpose, but national flag is a symbolic icon representing a country which was developed to cultural contents by its own. In this paper, national flag is defined as a content of visual expression element. National flag as visual expression element has particular symbol and meaning through various changes and repetitions, and it becomes a tool of communications. In general, national flag is a symbolic icon representing a country, but it became a cultural content in modern society. The case of national flag as visual expression element can be found in well-known countries or countries with big issues. With the pattern explained above, national flag as visual expression element is defined and analyzed as visual contents with various changes. Visual expression element of national flag is classified by context and element and it is considered as an expression method. In this paper, meaning of visual expression element is defined, and national flag as visual expression element is analyzed by cases. In addition, it shows how a visual content applied to our national flag called Taeguekgi. With more systematized design format and visual element of Taeguekgi, one visual expression content could be developed.
