Abstract
In this study, research was conducted by examining emotional clarity and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness as mediators of the relationship between self-silencing and depression among Korean female undergraduates (N=314). Participants completed 4 self-report measures: the Emotional Clarity from the Trait Meta-mood Scale (P. Salovey, J. D. Mayer, S. L. Goldman, C. Turney & P. Palfai, 1995), a Korean version of the Ambivalence Over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (L. A. King & R. A. Emmons, 1990), the Silencing The Self Scale (D. C. Jack & D. Dill, 1992) and a Korean version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (L. S. Radloff, 1977). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed using SPSS v.17.0. The results of the study are as follows: First, there were significant correlations between self-silencing, emotional clarity, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and depression. Depression was positively related to Self-silencing and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and negatively related to emotional clarity. Among the four subscales of the Silencing The Self Scale, the relationships between depression and 'externalized self-perception' and 'care as self-sacrifice' were stronger than others. Second, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness partially mediated the relationship between self-silencing and depression. Third, emotional clarity partially mediated the relationship between self-silencing and depression. The results of the present study suggest that self-silencing could be one of the important variables affecting depression in Korean women, which was consistent with previous researches in western cultures. In addition, mediational analyses suggest that in order to decrease depression, clinicians need to identify clients' self-silencing behaviors and help them aware their true feelings and thoughts and understand the potentially unhealthy consequences of their emotional suppression.
