Rebecca Clarke의 Sonata for Viola and Piano의 분석 연구

Abstract

Composer and violist Rebecca Clarke (1889-1976), who performed in the early 20th century, was born in Great Britain. She played the viola in orchestra and chamber orchestra, and composed nearly 100 works including songs, choral works, chamber pieces and music for solo instrument. Her music spans a range of 20th-century styles including Impressionism, Post-Romanticism, and Neo-Classicism. Being a female musician, her life was typical for composer-performers in the harsh milieu after the First World War. Such characteristics are present in his work <Sonata for Viola and Cello>, which is treated in this thesis. The sonata was composed in 1919. It consists of three movements: a sonata form, a rondo form and sonata-rondo form. Especially cyclic motives was appeared in the 3rd movement, themes of the 1st and 2nd movements accordingly was repeated in development. Whole-tone scale, pentatonic Scale and chromatic scale used throughout the work are to express the ethnic, rhapsodic and mysterious sound. Also she used quartal or quintal chords, poly-chords and irregular rhythm, the music she composed and performed is a revealing current of the modern style of the early 20thcentury. This project is about research composer Rebecca Clarke's life, her works, musical inclinations and characteristic. This paper is focused on the musical structure, harmony, rhythm and dynamics of the music, laying weight on the composer’s musicality and intention.;작곡가 겸 비올리스트인 Rebecca Clarke(1889-1976)은 20세기 초반에 왕성한 활동을 펼친 영국 출신의 여성 음악가이다. 그녀는 오케스트라와 실내악 단체에서 비올리스트로 활동하는 것뿐만 아니라 가곡, 합창곡, 실내악곡, 독주곡을 비롯한 100여 작품을 작곡했다. 그녀의 음악은 인상주의, 후기낭만주의, 신고전주의 양식을 포함하고 있으며, 여성 음악가로서 활동하기 힘든 시기였던 1차 세계대전 이후에 작곡가 겸 연주자로써 왕성한 활동을 펼친 대표적인 음악가이다. 이러한 Rebecca Clarke의 특징은 그녀의 작품에서 잘 나타나는데, 본 논문에서 다룰 <Sonata for Viola and Piano>는 1919년에 작곡된 것으로 그녀의 음악적 특징과 이상을 보여주는 작품이다. 이 작품은 3악장 구성으로, 1악장은 소나타 형식, 2악장은 5부분 론도 형식, 3악장은 소나타론도 형식으로 구성된다. 특히 3악장에서는 순환 동기가 나타나는데, 발전부에서 1악장과 2악장의 주제들이 재등장 한다. 곡 전반에 나타나는 5음음계(Pentatonic Scale), 온음음계(Whole-tone scale), 반음음계(Chromatic scale)등은 민속적 혹은 신비적이고 랩소디적인 효과를 불러일으킨다. 또한 4도 &#8228; 5도 구성의 화음이나 복화음, 불규칙한 리듬 등을 사용하며 20세기 초반에 나타났던 음악적 경향을 보여준다. 본 논문은 <Sonata for Viola and Piano>를 분석하기에 앞서 Rebecca Clarke의 생애와 작품을 살펴보고, 작품 경향과 특징에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 또한, 작품의 분석에 있어서는 각 악장의 형식, 화성, 선율, 리듬, 다이나믹등의 음악적 요소들의 세부적인 연구를 통해 작품을 심도 있게 조명하고자 한다.
