Abstract
Reproduction art and print art appeared during the period of the open-door. Newspaper advertisements, as a part of print art, is essential in studying early Korea's print art. During the period of the open-door, Western culture and new civilization was introduced in large quantities and had much influence on the images used in newspaper advertisements. Japan especially had a strong influence, and this influence was made evident in the visual images, and can also be understood that the visual images that were used in advertisements lied in the tastes of the general public and the sponsor. The visual images in newspaper advertisements during the period of the open-door is diverse. In the early period, images would consist of characters, and later on would change to trademarks, special characters, ornamental rule marks, and pictures to make the advertisement eye-catching. Advertisements that consisted of characters would have simple and uniform fonts that were made as headlines and sub-headlines, changing into various compositions. Also, to catch the viewers attention, special characters, icons, and illustrations were used, and to differentiate from other advertisements, ornamental rulemarks were used. To increase the buying power, illustrations and photographs that showed or suggested the advertising material were used. During the period that newspaper was first issued, Japan already was striving using the model of the Western countries, building a powerful army and a capitalistic society through the Meiji Restoration. Comparably, the Joseon Dynasty was under the policy of seclusion, which did not allow them to build a capital market, thus needless of advertisements that promote consumption. Adopted images were mostly brought in from foreign images, as they have already set the basis for advertising purposes. Visual i턴mages that were adopted have been altered according to the different standards or have been newly created, displaying mixed conditions.
