Abstract
This thesis analyzes ambivalence and multiplicity in the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres(1967-1996), thereby exploring the methodological shift from modernism to post-structuralism in art criticism. Revealing the limitations of previous studies that have emphasized the artist’s sexual identity, I attempt to move beyond the realm of identity politics to further analyze his work from multiple social contexts and aesthetic discourses. Moreover, I bring to light that conflicting values interact and coexist with one another within the work of Gonzalez-Torres, in order to reclaim values that were previously neglected under dualistic division of modernist criticism. Art after modernism distances itself from modernist faith in medium specificity as well as neglect of narrativity. As a result, modernist criticism based on formalism shows limitations in its ability to understand newly developed art such as conceptual art, performance art, and institutional critique that has emerged during the 1960s and 1970s. Post-structuralism’s 'multiple reading' has therefore become valuable in analyzing this art, especially the art of Gonzalez-Torres that demonstrates multiplicity in its content and meaning. In the work of Gonzalez-Torres, different attributes are not put in order but rather in simultaneous coexistence. Within his art coexists aesthetics of minimalism, conceptual art, and public art, which demonstrates that the artist in effect contributes to collapsing the modernist classification of genres. On a similar note, despite his work’s formal resemblance to minimalist art, Gonzalez-Torres’s art is open for multiple interpretations, thus functioning as an 'open text'. The processes of display and reception, for example, allow a possibility for political critique and engagement, resulting in the shift in focus from the artist (author) to the viewer (audience). In terms of the content, Gonzalez-Torres reveals no sharp distinction between the questions of life and death, and he tells of his personal stories to engage with larger sociopolitical issues. His art effectively demonstrates that artistic endeavor can take on the function of a text that responds to changes in social and cultural discourses and narrativatizes them. Through his particular aesthetic approaches to subject, as well as his play with the relationships between form and content, author and audience, Gonzalez-Torres seeks to propose the possibility for art to embody divergent values rather than subjugating them under one value system. This embodiment is undeniable evidence that his art exemplifies a form of art that emerges after modernism. The significance of Gonzalez-Torres’s artworks is then the co-presence of conflicting values—what modernism missed in the midst of its emphasis on dualism—and his art calls for a new methodology with which to interpret and understand art.
