Abstract
CES-D(The Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression Scale)을 사용하였으며, 조모의 삶의 만족도에 관한 척도는 양옥경(1994)의 삶의 만족을 측정하는 5점척도를 사용하였다. ;This study is devoted to examine actual condition and characteristics of grandmothers who were taking care of their grandchildren in working mother's place as well as their mental health and life satisfaction. This research was done with grandmothers' mental health and life satisfaction as dependent variables, and characteristics of rearing their grandchildren as independent variables. In this study, CES-D(The Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression Scale) was used as an scale of measuring the dependent variable, the mental health of grandmothers, and Yang Ok-Kyung's five-point scale was used to measure their life satisfaction. Questionnaire regarding rearing grandchildren, which was independent variable in this study, included motives for rearing, rearing hours, difficulties with rearing, helpers, their relationship with their children, and their opinions on rearing their grandchildren in working mothers' place. The questioned were the grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren instead of mothers working at fourteen elementary, middle and high schools as teachers, four general hospitals as nurses and 12 community welfare centers as social workers. The data for this study were collected for about 30 days from October 9 to November 10, and total 162 cases were used as data for analysis. The main outcomes of this research are as follow. First, it was revealed that individual grandmother took care of as many as 1.3 grandchildren, and spent 11.27 hours a day in doing that, for 37.25 months, or about three years on average. It showed a significant drop in their participation in social activities. About a half of them were paid some money from their children, and had helpers. Research found grandmothers sometimes had a talk with their sons and daughters regarding raising their grandchildren, yet in some cases, they had disagreements with each other on the method of rearing. According to the research, most of the grandmothers are tired with rearing their grandchildren, therefore found little amount time to take care of themselves. About 40% of the questioned answered that they were satisfied with rearing their grandchildren, while approximately the same percentage said they had no choice but to continue rearing their grandchildren. Second, looking into grandmothers' mental health, the average point of their emotional depression reached up 20.27, which was relatively high in comparison with clinical standard of depression of 15 points. The degree of their life satisfaction averaged normal 3.07 points. Third, grandmothers' mental health and life satisfaction differed according to their actual condition and characteristics for rearing their grandchildren. It was founded that grandmothers suffered from high emotional depression and low life satisfaction when the period was long, when they had no helper, and when they had little talk, and a relatively poor bond of affection with their children. Meanwhile, grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren willingly and voluntarily showed good mental health condition and high life satisfaction. Fourth, characteristics of grandmothers' rearing their grandchildren were influenced by grandmothers' individual and family-environmental variables. It was shown that more talks took place between grandmothers and their children, working mothers when grandmothers were younger, of higher education background, and better off. Their motives to raise their grandchildren on behalf of children's working mother were enhanced when they had a spouse and working experience themselves, and were affordable to spend to their living expenses on their own. When questioned if they were willing to continue raising their grandchildren, they were more affirmative when they had a better relationship with their children, had helpers, and when they expressed gratitude of talking pains. Fifth, it appeared that grandmother' mental health and life satisfaction varied according to their individual and family-environmental variables. That is to say, they showed better mental health and higher degree of life satisfaction when they had higher education background, and when they were richer. In addition, they were happier when their raising children of their son than children of daughters. Sixth, study proved that grandmother' subjective thoughts influenced their own life satisfaction under the situation of their individual and family-environmental variables being controlled. In addition, grandmothers' relationship with their children and their future plan varied according to their mental health and life satisfaction. Based on the study results, we can find that grandmothers, who are raising their grandchildren in working mothers' place, had dissatisfaction and difficulties such as little participation n social activities and physical problems. This indicates that their surrogate raising of their grandchildren does not have positive effects only on them. Also, grandmothers need to take care of their own health which can be easily neglected while raising their grandchildren considering their physical condition are closely related to their emotional depression. In conclusion, in order to enhance grandmothers' mental condition and degree of life satisfaction, we can discuss plans for social welfare as follows. First, the average age of the questioned is 60.5, which means they are in their late middle years. As a consequence, we need to introduce diversified programs and social supports in order to help encourage them participate in healthy and various leisure and social activities, Change in our conception on grandmother's role based on the traditional spectrum of families are bearing responsibilities fir contemplating and drawing the most effective way to raise working mothers' children. Secondly, working mothers have preferred depending on their mothers to take care of their children ti using social facilities due to insufficient number of public nursery and unsatisfactory quality of child-care service. So, we need ti increase public baby care nursery and existing child-care nursery in number, also improve their service that service that satisfy needs of working mothers and their children. Lastly, forming a support group for grandmothers raising their grandchildren instead of working mothers could help them cope with stress they encounter through successful support.
