Abstract
;Jean-Philippe Rameau(1683-1764) was a contemporary of J.S.Bach, G.F.Handel and D.Scarlatti. He was one of the leading french composers in the first half of the 18th century and a representable composer of a classic school in France. His operas numbering to 32 world express the dominant features of french music which are explicitness, elegance, moderation and dignity. As well, he was famous for his abundant production, and he was well known for his papers on harmony. He was both an inspired composer and a gifted analyst. The theme of this study, 「Hippolyte et Aricie」was his first opera and shows his distinguished musical talent. This opera failed to attract public attention at that time, but it is gaining a great reputation lately. The story of this opera was written by the famous abbot, Abbe Pellegrin and it is a mixture of Hipplytus written by Euripides, and Phedre written by Racine. In this opera, recitatives are not distinguished from areas, and the recitatives were composed with exact rhythmic notation. As he was interested in harmony, every melody was composed based on harmonic principles. Also, counterpoint was employed in his melodies more than in Lully's works. He made great advances in the role of the orchestra. It gained great importance as an innovation to the drama, and it depicts details of each scene. Choruses and ensembles became magnificent, diversified and splendid and they were utilized mainly in dramatic parts. In this study, Rameau's career and general features of his operas are examined. The, 「Hippolyte et Aricie」, his first opera is analyzed. At the end, his aria, "Rossingnols Amoureux" is analyzed to better understand Rameau's operatic world.
