S. Rachmaninoff의 <Variations on a theme of corelli, op.42>에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 본인의 석사 과정 이수를 위한 졸업 연주회 곡목중 하나인 라흐마니노프 (S. Rachmaninoff)의 「코렐리 변주곡」 (Variations on an Theme of Corelli, Op. 42)에 관하여 연구한 것이다. 본 논문은 라흐마니노프의 음악 어법과 「코렐리 변주곡」의 특징을 살펴봄으로써 보다 정확한 악곡 해석에 의한 연주에 도움을 주는 것을 목적으로 한다. 러시아 출신의 라흐마니노프(1873-1943)는 후기 낭만주의 전통의 마지막 작곡가인 동시에 당대의 뛰어난 피아니스트이자 지휘자였다. 당시의 유럽 음악계에는 낭만주의 사조에서 탈피한 진보적이고 개혁적인 음악이 다양하게 선보이고 있었다. 하지만 라흐마니노프는 이러한 조류에 편승하지 않고 서정적인 선율과 풍부한 음향의 전형적인 낭만주의 어법을 사용해 자신만의 독특하고 섬세한 음악 세계를 표현하였다. 그의 피아노 음악은 길고 서정적인 선율과 수직적으로 꽉 찬 화성이 특징이며 특히, 피아노라는 악기의 특징과 장점을 효과적으로 보여줄 수 있는 여러 가지 화려한 테크닉을 보여주고 있다. 라흐마니노프의 「코렐리 변주곡」은 1931년에 쓰여진 그의 마지막 피아노 독주곡이다. 이 곡은 각기 성격이 뚜렷한 20개의 변주로 이루어졌으며 인터메쪼(Intermezzo)와 코다(Coda)를 포함하고 있다. 「코렐리 변주곡」의 각 변주는 유기적으로 연관되어 있는데, 느리게 시작하여 점점 빨라지는 템포의 변화에 의해 3부분으로 나뉘어질 수 있다. 「코렐리 변주곡」의 선율과 화성은 낭만주의의 특징인 반음계적 진행이 주를 이루며 주제는 분산 화음, 꾸밈음, 도약진행 선율 등으로 수식되거나 변형되었다. 리듬은 3 연음부 리듬, 붓점 리듬, 당김음 리듬 등 한가지 패턴을 정하여 강조했으며 액센트를 사용해 주제를 수식하였다. 조성은 d 단조이나 제 14변주, 제 15변주에서 잠시 D-flat 장조로 전조된다. 또한 잦은 변박으로 일정한 박절감에서 벗어나 긴장감을 조성하였다. 이상과 같이 「코렐리 변주곡」은 라흐마니노프의 피아노 음악에 나타난 특징을 잘 보여주는 곡이다. ;This thesis is a study of 「Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42」by S. Rachmaninoff which was a part of the repertoires of this writer's recital for the completion of Master's degree. The purpose of this study is to help in playing the 「Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42」 through more accurate interpretation by looking into the languages of Rachmaninoff's piano music as they relate to the particular features of 「Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42」. S. Rachmaninoff(1873-1943) was the distinguished composer and the last great representative of Russian late romanticism, as well as being one of the finest pianist and conductor of his time. At the time in Europe, various musical trends were emerging whose revolutionary innovative styles contrasted sharply with those of the romantic tradition. Instead of following these new tendencies however, Rachmaninoff expressed his own unique and emotionally sensitive music world by adhering to the nineteenth century romantic tradition, through the use of lyrical melody and rich harmony. His piano music is noted for its long-breath melody and opulent chordal harmony and especially in its ability to demonstrate the unique qualities and advantages of the instrument by employing brilliant techniques. 「Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42」 was written in 1931 and his last piece for solo piano. It is made up of twenty variations, including Intermezzo and Coda. Each variation has distinctive and unique quality. It followed after the theme of 「Violin Sonata Op.5, No.12」by A. Corelli and in fact, it is not Corelli's original work but was derived from the traditional dance form originated in Portuguese called "Folia". Each variation of 「Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42」 has organic relation and can be considered to be divided into three parts on tempo changes which star slowly and gradually faster. The melody and harmony of the 「Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42」borrow mostly from the chromatic progression, which is one of the noted characteristics of romanticism. In each variation, the melody is expressed through arpeggios, ornaments and disjunct motion melody. Each variation shows various rhythm patterns such as dotted rhythm. Syncopation, triplet. The theme is embellished by ornamentations and accents. The key is D-minor but momentarily changes into D-flat minor in the fourteenth and fifteenth variations. Also, within one variation, it frequently changes its meters so as to give to rise to tension. As seen thus far, 「Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42」epitomizes Rachmaninoff's musical achievement.
