P. B. 셸리의 "사랑"의 시학 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서 필자는 『해방된 프로메테우스Prometheus Unbound 』에 구현된 셸리Percy Bysshe Shelley의 “사랑”의 시학을 고찰한다. 물질주의를 비판하고 인간의 정신능력을 옹호하는 셸리의 시학에 있어 “사랑Love”은 핵심적인 개념이다. 셸리의 “사랑”은 『사랑에 관하여 On Life』 뿐 아니라, 『삶에 관하여On Life』, 『시의 옹호A Defence of Poetry 』, 『형이상학에 관한 고찰Speculations on Metaphysics』,『도덕에 관한 고찰Speculations on Morals』, 그리고 『해방된 프로메테우스Prometheus Unbound』의 서문을 통해 이해할 수 있는데, 본 논문의 Ⅱ장에서 필자는 셸리의 산문에 나타난 “사랑”을 파악하고, 이를 토대로 Ⅲ장에서 『해방된 프로메테우스』를 분석하겠다. 셸리가 산문에서 말하고 있는 “사랑”은 좁은 개인적 자아의 한계를 벗어나게 하는 원동력, 낙원Paradise 로 포현되는 이상세계를 향한 열망, 그리고 대형(對型)antitype와의 결합 욕구로 요약된다. 그리고 “사랑”은 시인의 정신과 마찬가지로 모든 형태를 아름답게 변화시키는 힘을 지니고 있다. 『해방된 프로메테우스』에서는 이러한 “사랑”이 세 가지 의미로 나타난다. 첫째, “사랑”은 이상세계를 향한 공감의 동인이다. 프로메테우스의 각성을 직접 전해 듣지 못한 인물들은 초월적인 형상들을 보고 그 의미를 탐색하면서 혁명의 필요성을 깨닫게 된다. “사랑”은 등장인물들이 이상세계에 대한 인식을 얻고 그것을 갈망하게 하는 힘이 되고 있다. 둘째, “사랑”은 타인과의 결합에 대한 희구로 나타난다. 프로메테우스와 아시아의 재회뿐 아니라 작품 안에는 여러 인물들의 만남과 결합을 통한 조화가 형성되는데, 인물과 인물간의 합일, 나아가 인물과 배경인 전우주의 조화는 좁은 자아를 벗어나 거대한 “하나의 정신One Mind”이 이루어지는 과정을 보여준다. 마지막으로, “사랑”은 변화하고 소멸하는 세계 내에서 무한한 불멸의 예술작품을 창작하고자 하는 의지로 나타난다. 혁명 후 동굴에 은거한 프로메테우스는 자연에 있는 것을 소재로 보다 새로운 것을 만들어내겠다는 의지를 표방하는데, 이것은 인간의 유한성을 극복하고자 하는 셸리의 낭만주의적 예술관을 반영한 것이라고 할 수 있다. “사랑”을 중심으로 진행되는 『해방된 프로메테우스』의 혁명과 그 결과는 곧 이상적인 시가 창작되는 것에 대한 비유라고 할 수 있다.;This thesis examines Percy Bysshe Shelley's poetics of Love in Prometheus Unbound. Shelley criticizes materialism and advocates the value of the human mind. "Love" is the key word in Shelley's poetics. Shelley's prose works, A Defence of Poetry, On Love, On Life, Speculations on Metaphysics and Morals, and the preface of Prometheus Unbound show the meaning of Shelleyan "Love". Chapter Ⅱ traces the concept of Love in Shelley's prose. Chapter Ⅲ explores how Shelley embodies his concepts of Love in his poem Prometheus Unbound. In his essays, Shelley says Love is an attraction toward an ideal world and to enables one to escape the limits of the individual self. Also, Love is the desire for a union with one's own antitype. It has the power to transform all things into beautiful forms. There are three meanings of Love in Prometheus Unbound. First, Love is the attraction towards an ideal world. The characters of Prometheus Unbound can not directly hear the awakening of Prometheus. They feel the necessity of the ideal change through tracing the meaning of the vision and floating shapes. Love makes the characters feel the necessity to change and cooperate with each other for the completion of the ideal world. Second, Love is the desire for the union with others. Prometheus is reunified with Asia, and other characters also find their links with one another and even with the universe. "One Mind" is achieved by this union of the characters and their harmony. Third, Love is the will to create the immortal and unchangeable works of art in the finite and mutable world. After the revolution, Prometheus retreats into the cave with Asia, and there he makes "strange combinations" out of common things. As an artist, Prometheus embodies the Romantic consciousness of Shelly. Thus, the course of revolution through Love in Prometheus Unbound is a metaphor of the ideal writing of poetry.
