Abstract
The objective of this is to research Johannes Brahms' first violin Sonata, in G Major, op. 78 of 1879, with a special reference to his life, musical characteristics, and the relationships of both. Brahms was one of the most outstanding chamber music composer in the latter half of the 19th century. brahms(1833~1897) was a romantic composer inheriting German orthodoxy from J. S.Bach(1685~1750) through L.v. Beethoven(1770~1827) and he has powerful and romantic characteristics in his music. He was a composer of Neo- classicism and his works are based on his own lyrical and romantic sentiments in the form of traditional Classicism in opposition to the Program music, the prevailing musical tendency of his time. In this thesis, Violin Sonata No.1 in G Major Op. 78, its composition method& musical characteristics which appeare in his chamber music,are breifly examined. Violin Sonata No.1 in G Major,which was first published in his forties,was composed in 1879.His works are the best masterpieces of the romantic violin sonatas. As his first G Major was composed in a beautiful lakeside city, Peretchaha in Austria,not only it was refreshing as if had reminded that beautiful scenery there, but also it was elegant and its dignity is rich. This tune is the work of the third period in his creative work. The analysis of this violin sonata is focused on tracing forms and keys,harmonic progressions and rhythmic structures,and motivc elements. This work consists of 3 movements; the first movement is taking the sonata form, the second taking ternary form, and the third taking Rondo forms, thus following the structure of the classicsonata. The melody of his song "Regendlied",which appears in the introduction of the third movement, has already appeared in expanded form in the theme of the second movement. Similar melodies in each movement have close and mutual relationships. Elegant melodies&lyrical melodies progessing in each theme show us his romaticism. The uniformity and organic structure of the work is well established through the enlargement and abridgement of the rhythm in each movement. In the method of progression in each motive& figure, one can clearly see his counterpoint techniques;imitation,repetition and sequential progressions. Also in the progression of harmony,diminished 7th chord,secondary dominant chord & dominant 7th chord were used many times, and above all,drastic modulation and enharmonic modulation show us his attempt of romanticism. The modulation and the role of the piano are not important to the seniars but in his music the piano accompaniment and peculiar rhythm are in pressive. In conclusion it may be stated that while following the Classical style in terms of form,this sonata is replete with Brahms' own lrricism and romanticcism in terms of harmony,melody and tone color.;J.Brahms(1833-1897)는 고전주의 형식위에 그의 서정적이고 낭만적인 풍부한 정감을 혼합시켜 동시대의 음악적 흐름에 동요하지 않은 독자적인 세계를 구축한 신고전주의 작곡가이며 절대음악을 향한 그의 건축적 사고는 자주 베토벤(L.V.Beethoven)과 비교되곤 한다. 그의 창작시기를 모두 넷으로 나누어 볼 수 있는데 그 중 제3기인 1876-1890년에 작곡된 그의 작품에서는 고전주의 양식과 낭만성의 융합이 확립되었으며 3개의 violin sonata들은 모두 이때 작곡되었다. 3개의 바이올린 소나타중 제1번인 op.78은 3악장으로 구성되었으며, 1악장은 소나타 형식(sonata-allegro form), 2악장은 3부형식(ternary form), 3악장은 론도형식(rondo form)으로 고전주의의 소나타 형식을 따르고 있다. 각 주제의 선율은 우아하고 서정적으로 진행되어 그의 낭만성을 엿볼 수 있으며 그의 가곡에서 착상된 제3악장의 도입부의 선율은 제2악장의 주제에서도 발견된다. 각 동기나 음형의 전개방식에 있어서 대위법적 기법, 즉 모방 진행, 반복진행, 동형진행이 두드러지게 나타난다. 그리고 제 1악장의 주요 리듬형이 동기적, 선율적 통일성을 이루어 전 곡을 통하여 순환적 기능을 취하고 있다. 리듬에 있어서 부점 리듬이 전 곡을 통하여 지배적으로 사용되었으며 당김음, 교차리듬등을 사용함으로써 다양한 형태의 리듬을 구사하고 있다. 화성 진행에 있어서도 감7화음, 부속7화음, 딸림7화음을 주로 많이 사용하고 있으며 급격한 반음계적 전조와 이명동음을 통한 전조에서 그의 낭만적인 시도를 엿볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 violin sonata No.1 in G Major op.78을 분석하여 그의 작곡 기법과 음악적 특징을 살펴보았으며, 분석에 앞서 그의 실내악 작품에 나타난 전반적인 특징에 대해 간단히 고찰하였다.
