아시아 여성신학자 이선애 목사의 생애와 신학

Abstract

본 논문은 아시아 여성신학의 선구자 역할을 하였고, 한국 여성신학과 아시아 여성신학 발전에 주춧돌 역할을 한 이선애 목사를 추모하는 글이다. 본 논문의 연구방법은 이선애에 대한 선행연구자료가 없었으므로 인터뷰와 그가 남긴 글들을 기초로 하였다. 이선애의 삶은 유년기부터 학창시절, 유학시절부터 1차 귀국까지, 그리고 제네바에서 2차 귀국까지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그는 가정교육에서 기독교인으로 사회적 책임을 가지고 자신의 일에 대해서 책임있는 역할을 다하되 이웃에게 인격적인 대우를 하는 것을 잊지 않도록 가르침을 받았고 그의 삶에서 항상 지켜왔던 것을 볼 수 있다. 그런데 한국적 상황이 주는 여성에 대한 제한된 사회적 역할에 대해서 이선애는 분노하였다. 그리고 이 분노는 홀로 해결할 수 없음을 깨닫게 된다. 남편의 임지를 따라 제네바, 미국, 싱가포르에 거주하면서 활동의 제한을 받던 시절이 있었지만 그는 에큐메니칼 리더 부인으로만 남기를 거부하고 싱가포르에서 여성운동을 시작한다. 그는 아시아적 상황에서 억압받는 여성들의 움츠러져있는 목소리를 내도록 아시아에서 최초로 신학여성잡지 In God's Image를 편집하였고 EATWOT의 아시아지역 코디네이터로 활동하면서 아시아 여성들의 대변인 역할을 하였다. 또 그는 아시아 여성신학자료센터(AWRC)를 세워 아시아 여성신학의 기틀을 마련하고 정립할 수 있는 장을 마련하였다. 이선애의 신학은 아시아의 종교문화 상황에서 여성들의 고통과 억압을 배경으로 한 아시아 여성신학이다. 그의 신학은 여성 평등사상과 에큐메니칼 파트너십 사상이다. 그는 여성 평등사상을 일깨우기 위해 여성적 성서읽기를 주장하였다. 그는 구원론적 관점에서 성서읽기를 통하여 여성은 해방을 이룰 수 있으며, 해방된 그들은 아시아의 억압받는 모든 여성들의 예증적인 해방자가 될 수 있다고 보았다. 그의 종말론적 관점은 자기중심적이고 개인적이며 상황 도피적인 혼돈의 상태에 있는 여성들에게 부활의 희망을 갖게 한다. 그는 아시아의 여성들에게 공동체의 일치와 공동의 선을 이루는데 참여하라고 촉구한다. 또 이선애는 아시아의 여성들에게 교회변혁을 위한 에큐메니칼 파트너십을 가지라고 격려한다. 그리고 교회를 뛰어넘는 종교간의 대화를 통한 에큐메니칼 파트너십을 이루자고 한다. 더 나아가 하나님의 개방성 아래 온전한 에큐메니칼 파트너십을 이룰 것을 주장한다. 그가 여성의 평등을 위해 아시아 여성들과 에큐메니칼 파트너십을 나누며 헌신적으로 활동한 삶은 한 알의 밀알이 되어 움트고 있다. 그의 영향은 아시아와 한국 여성들의 활동 가운데 나타나고 있다. 이선애는 아시아 여성신학의 산파로 기억될 것이다. 그는 학문에만 머무르거나 활동에만 치우치지 않으면서 아시아 여성들의 아픔을 들어주고 함께 해결하고자 하였다. 아시아 여성 사랑을 가지고 활동한 이선애의 생애와 신학을 통해 아시아 여성신학을 연구하는자의 자세를 새롭게 할 수 있다.;This thesis paper is in memory of the late Reverend Sun-Ai Lee, who was the pioneer of Asian and Korean feminist theology. The method of research for this thesis is based on the interviews and the writings that she has left, for there are no prior research materials about her. Her life has been examined in three sectors; from her youth to school life, the time of studying abroad to her first return to Korea, and her time in Geneva to her second return. She had been educated from her parents so that she will bear all social responsibilities of a Christian and at the same time be human to the neighbors. Such qualities were everpresent in her life. However, Sun-Ai Lee had been outraged by the limited social role that Korean society has given to women. She realized that this anger could not be dealt with by herself. Although she had had partial restrictions to her activities while she followed her husband to Geneva, the U.S.A., and Singapore, she refused to stay as a wife of an ecumenical leader, and started a feminist movement in Singapore. She tried to help the women in Asia to voice out their opinions from their social restrictions, and published the first Asian feminist theological magazine, In God's Image, and worked as the Asian coordinator of EATWOT, where she worked as a representative of Asian women. Also, she has established Asia Women's Resource Center(AWRC) to establish the grounds for Asian feminist theology. Theology of Sun-Ai Lee is based on the context of oppression against women under Asian religious culture. Her theological focus is about equality and ecumenical partnership. She wanted to raise the awareness of equality of women and called for the feminist interpretation of the Bible. She suggested that through soteriological reading of the bible, women could be liberated, and those women that were liberated could be the living proof of the liberation of the women in Asia. Her eschatological perspective provides hope of resurrection to those who are self-centered, individualistic and evasive of their situation. She called for the Asian women to participate in the community's collaboration and common good. Also, she encouraged Asian women to strengthen ecumenical partnership for the renewal of the church. She wholeheartedly wished to fulfill the ecumenical partnership that will allow inter-religious dialogue. Furthermore, she stressed on the importance of achieving a full ecumenical partnership under "God's openness." Her life of dedication to the ecumenical partnership in fulfillment of women's equality is bearing its fruit like a single seed of wheat. Her influence is portrayed among the activities of Korean and Asian women. Sun-Ai Lee will be remembered as the maternity nurse of Asian feminist theology. She did not limit her scope of work around scholarly boundaries, but reached out beyond to listen and solve the sufferages of Asian women. The author of this thesis argues that by studying the life and theology of Sun-Ai Lee who lived a life of love towards Asian women, we can renew our faith and attitude towards studying Asian feminist theology.
