송희승의 "The Ruth" for Orchestra 연구

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to look at musical characteristics of “The Ruth” for Orchestra written by Heeseung Song from 2006 to 2008 as a part of effort to study modern creative Korean music. “The Ruth”, an orchestral work for three wind instruments, consists of 303 bars in a single movement 20 minute long, based on the stories from ‘the Book of Ruth’. It examines ‘the Perfect Fourth Mode Acoustic Space Technique’ which is a new composing technique created by Prof. Joo, Young-ja, along with traditional Korean rhythm, presenting two families, four houses and eight people (Elimelech, Naomi, Mahlon, Chilion, Orpah, Ruth, Boaz and Obed). The plot of “The Ruth” gets divided into 5 chapters and again into 10 smaller parts. The first chapter depicts a quiet and peaceful village starting with an entrance of Elimelech and Naomi. The second chapter illustrates good and poor harvest. Also, the third chapter presents a requiem for Mahlon and Chilion with Naomi, Orpah and Ruth grieving over their deaths. Mahlon and Chilion sing duet here. The fourth chapter celebrates a marriage of Boaz and Ruth and good harvest of the year, whereas the fifth describes the birth of Obed, a grandfather of Jesus Christ. The scale of the work consists of nine notes employing the Fourth Mode Acoustic Space technique. The first pillar of the scale represents husbands, i.e. men. On the other hand, the second pillar consists of five notes symbolizing wives, i.e. women. Also, with Boaz and Ruth representing the sky and the earth respectively and their son, Obed (a grandfather of Jesus Christ) the human, they embody a harmonizing family. The traits of eight characters were grouped according to a house of the Boazs and three houses of the family of Elimelech for scale and melody based on the Acoustic Space. Also, it was shown that the melody was counter pointed and applied to steretto when the characters sang duet, trio or codetta (in the fourth chapter). In addition, the progression of rhythm is in line with the characters using traditional Korean beats (Buddhist prayer, Dodri, Yeominrak 1, 2, 3, Sangyoungsan of Kwanak Youngsanhoisang, Sujeocheon, Dongdong’s beat, Jungjungmori, Saeyoungsan of Youngsanhoisang, Karakduli rhythm, Saemachi, Jajinmori and Gyeonggi Goodgeori rhythm). The Acoustic Space was employed or combined as it is based on the Fourth Mode Acoustic Space technique. Execution of instruments (tremolo, accent, glissando, trill, mute, pizzicato, etc),dynamic marks and articulation are in sync with each instrument group, exhibiting musical techniques for string instruments. “The Ruth” is considered to make a big contribution to the globalization of modern creative Korean music with its employment of the Fourth Mode Acoustic Space Technique and traditional Korean rhythm.;본 논문은 송희승의 "The Ruth" for Orchestra의 음악적 특징을 연구한 내용으로 되어 있다. "The Ruth"는 성경 “룻기”의 이야기를 소재로 3관 편성의 관현악 곡이며 2006년에서 2008년에 걸쳐 작곡한 약 20분 길이의 303마디 단악장 작품이다. "The Ruth"에는 작곡가 주영자(1945~ )의 기독교적 세계관에 입각한 천지인 합일사상과 음양오행설을 음악에 융합한 새로운 작곡기법이 사용되었다. "The Ruth"에는 두 가문, 네 가정, 8명의 인물이 등장하며, 전 곡은 완전 4도모드 음향공간기법(The Perfect Fourth Mode Acoustic Space Technique)이 수평․수직구성에 적용되면서 한국적인 장단 특징과 함께 전개된다. 구성은 제 5부, 10부분으로 전개되며 제 I부는 평온하고 평화로운 마을을 엘레멜렉과 나오미의 등장으로 시작하고 제 II부는 풍년과 흉년을, 제 III부는 기룐과 말론의 죽음에 대한 레퀴엠으로 기룐과 말론의 이중주로 슬퍼하는 나오미, 오르바, 룻을 삼중주로 표현하였다. 제 IV부는 보아스와 룻의 결혼과 풍년을, 제 V부는 예수 그리스도의 조부인 오벳의 탄생을 음악적으로 나타내었다. 4도모드 음향공간기법을 사용한 음계는 두 개의 구조가 있는 9음 음계로 되어 있으며 제 1구조는 남성인 남편을, 제 2구조는 여성인 아내를 상징하는 5음 음계로 구성하였다. 보아스家(보아스, 룻, 오벳)의 보아스와 룻은 天과 地로 아들 오벳(예수의 조부)을 人으로 천지인 합일하는 가정을 표현하였다. 8명의 등장인물의 특징은 보아스家의 한 가정과 엘레멜렉家의 세 가정으로 구분하여서 음향공간에 의한 음계와 선율을 살펴보았고 이들 8명의 등장인물이 이중주나 삼중주 될 때 혹은 코데타(제 IV부)를 연주할 때 선율이 대위적으로 스트레토 됨을 알 수 있었다. 리듬진행도 한국 장단(긴염불, 도드리, 여민락 1, 2, 3장 관악 영산회상 中 상영산, 수제천, 동동의 장단, 중중모리, 영산회상 中 세영산, 가락덜이 장단, 세마치, 자진모리, 경기 굿거리 장단)을 이용하여 등장인물에 따라 표현하였다. 또한 음향공간은 4도모드 음향공간기법에 의하여 그대로 사용하거나 결합하였다. 악기주법(트레몰로, 악센트, 글리산도, 트릴, 약음기, 피치카토 등), 셈여림, 아티큘레이션 등은 악기군 별로 결합하여 관현악의 다양한 음색을 사용하였다. "The Ruth"는 새로운 음악기법인 4도모드 음향기법과 한국장단으로 작곡한 작품으로 한국현대 창작음악의 세계화에 교두보 역할을 할 것으로 생각된다.
