This research aims to suggest metadata elements for digital arts archiving that emerged along with the development of digital technology. Series of literature research, domestic and overseas case studies, intranational facts and surveys were conducted for this particular study. Literature reviews included the definition and characteristics of media arts and considered elements for constructing metadata. Foreign case studies were reviewed and analyzed such as metadata elements of OASIS(Open Archiving System with Internet Sharing) project, artbase of Rhizome, V2 Archive, Database of Virtual Art, ICC Archive, Ars Electronica Archive and MANS(Media Art Notation System) that have focused on documentary aspects in preserving media arts. Intranational facts and surveys were analyzed to examine current situation of media arts conservation and domestic media arts metadata element development.
This study proposes media arts metadata elements which are reflecting domestic circumstances based on Dublin Core Metadata Element Set through overseas case studies, intranational fact analysis and results of interview. and were added to fifteen elements of Dublin Core. In total, thirteen mandatory elements were selected and later segmented to sub elements. , , , , , , , , , of Dublin Core were utilized, but sub elements were suggested to reflect and represent characteristic of media arts.
