클레오파트라의 복식과 상징성

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the Fashion Design and its image of the "Queen Cleopatra(69 B.C. - 30 B.C.)" of Egypt , depicted in the movie <Cleopatra, 1963, actress Elizabeth Taylor>. Based on the study, the direction of the future research on the design of the stage or movie costume. Also, three stage costumes as a whole have been designed and created. The cultural background of the Queen Cleopatra was reviewed using the related historic documents and evidences of contemporary costumes shown at the ancient Egyptian wall paintings, relics and available photographic pictures. Movie <Cleopatra> directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz in 1963 was analyzed using the articles, critics, and columns reported in many movie and fashion related magazines inside and outside of Korea, Documents and data available at internet web-sites, as well as many photographic pictures captured from related DVDs, were also used. In movie <Cleopatra>, the costume of Cleopatra included the trend of Queen's costume of ancient Egypt New Kingdom, the fashion of the early 1960s and Elizabeth Taylor's personal clothing taste. On the base of this, movie clothing with simple silhouette like sheath skirt and chemise dress, and variety of vivid colors, such as red, green, and turquoise, and black was created. Cleopatra's characteristics and ancient Egypt Osiris mythology were added to this, and these kinds of symbolic meanings were described as movie costume's patterns and colors. While the symbolic meanings of the costume were chiefly represented in textile pattern, embroidered design or pattern and color of ornaments, costume expressed allegory through color rather than pattern. Characteristics of Cleopatra is described as multilingual, intelligent and diplomatical woman in historical records and as passionate, dignified, fresh, full of variety and vampire type woman in Shakespears' 「Antony and Cleopatra」, the original work of the movie. Also, in order to make the most of condense of movie image, the color of clothes was used to give hint for Cleopatra's characteristic, attitude, appearance and emotions. Red represents passion, black represents intelligence and dignity, green represents fresh characteristic and emotion of love, yellow represents the feeling of jealousy, turquoise represents delightfulness, and blue represents hope. When looking at the symbolic meaning of ancient Egypt color, white symbolizes light of the sun, red symbolizes the power of Isis god, black symbolizes territorial greed, scarlet red symbolizes the grief of farewell, gold symbolizes eternal royal authority, yellow symbolizes nobility, green symbolizes sacredness of Osiris god, new life and prosperity, and blue symbolizes the protection of the death. When looking at the symbolic meaning of the pattern, alive flower symbolizes birth of light and pure power, Djed symbolizes man and endurance, Nephthys god symbolizes the master and protection, Re-Harakhty god symbolizes light of the sun Ankh symbolizes new creature, lotus symbolizes revival, in other words, eternal life. The color and pattern of ancient Egypt represent the concentrated power centering around the Sun god which was used to maintain royal authority. Just like this, color and pattern represented religion symbolically in order to symbolize absolute royal power in the movie <Cleopatra>. Adding modern trend to the result of study so far, the image of Cleopatra who wanted to identify herself with Egyptian gods was planned to be expressed in a new version of fashion design. Cleopatra's characteristic as shown above, passionate characteristic and god power of Isis god that red symbolizes, intelligent characteristic and dignity that black symbolizes, emotion of love that green symbolizes, and delightfulness that turquoise symbolizes were selected. On the base of this, composition of the work was formed with black as a general base color in order to represent Cleopatra's dignity, confidence and territory and with concept of Kemeto of Cleopatra, Dignity of Cleopatra and Love of Cleopatra, three stage costume as a whole was designed and created. This study arranged the symbolic meaning of contemporary color and pattern with the costume of period of ancient Egypt New Kingdom by looking for the costume in movie <Cleopatra>, main character of which is Elizabeth Taylor. And using Cleopatra's image and symbolic meaning of ancient Egypt design to be developed. Moreover, it suggested the way that movie costume and stage costume design research to do.;본 연구는 역사적인 인물 클레오파트라와 셰익스피어의 극(play)「안토니와 클레오파트라」를 영상화한 조셉 L. 맨케비츠(Joseph L. Mankiewicz) 감독의 시대극 영화 <클레오파트라(Cleopatra, 1963, actress Elizabeth Taylor)>를 통해서, 주인공 클레오파트라의 이미지, 클레오파트라의 복식, 그 복식에 나타난 문양과 색채의 상징성 등을 탐구하여 이 컨텐츠를 패션 디자인을 위한 자료로 활용할 수 있게 하며, 더 나아가 무대의상을 디자인하고 제작하는데 연구 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 우선 실존인물이었던 클레오파트라(69 B.C.-30 B.C.)를 이해하기 위해서 문헌자료를 통해 당시의 문화적 배경을 살펴보고, 고대 이집트의 벽화와 유물, 복식사 관련 문헌의 내용과 시각자료를 중심으로 역사 복식을 고증하였다. 그리고 1963년 제작된 조셉 L. 멘케비츠 감독의 영화 <클레오파트라>의 DVD타이틀 영상자료를 중심으로 여주인공 클레오파트라의 복식과 문양, 색채 이미지 등을 연구하였고, 본 영화와 관련된 영화관련 정보지, 국내외 논평, 패션 정보지 및 영상 관련 문헌과 인터넷 검색, 영화의상에 관련된 자료에서 영화 내용과 성격, 감독의 시각 등을 고찰하였다. 영화 <클레오파트라>에서 여주인공 클레오파트라의 복식은 고대 이집트 신왕국 시대 왕비 복식, 1960년대 초반 패션, 엘리자베스 테일러 취향의 의상 등이 공존하여, 네크라인을 깊이 파고 시스 스커트나 슈미즈 드레스의 단순한 실루엣과 빨강색, 녹색, 터키즈와 같은 강한 원색과 검은색 등의 다양한 색상으로 제작되었다. 또한 클레오파트라의 복식에는 그녀의 성격과 고대 이집트의 오시리스 신화가 접목되었는데, 이러한 의미들은 영화 의상과 장신구의 색채와 문양을 통해 상징적으로 표현되었다. 특히 의상은 문양보다는 색채로 우의를 표현하였다. 클레오파트라 복식의 문양의 상징성을 살펴보면, 생명의 꽃 문양은 빛의 탄생과 순수한 힘, 제드 문양은 남성과 인내심, 네프티스 문양은 주인과 보호, 라 하라크테 문양은 태양 빛과 생식력, 앙크 문양은 새로운 생명, 연꽃 문양은 부활 즉 영원한 생명 등을 상징하고 있다. 색채 상징성을 살펴보면, 흰색은 태양 빛, 빨간색은 이시스 신의 신권, 검정색은 영토욕, 주홍색은 이별의 슬픔, 금색은 영원한 왕권, 노랑색은 존귀함, 녹색은 오시리스 신의 신성과 새로운 삶, 번영, 파란색은 죽은자 보호 등을 상징하고 있다. 이에 더하여 영상 이미지의 축약성을 살리기 위해, 의복 색으로 클레오파트라의 성격과 태도, 외모와 감정 상태를 암시했다. 빨간색은 열정적인 성격을, 검정색은 지적이고 당당한 성격, 위엄과 자신감 있는 태도를 나타내었고 주홍색은 이별의 슬픔을, 녹색은 신선한 성격과 사랑의 감정을, 노란색은 질투의 감정을, 터키즈는 즐겁고 기쁜 감정을, 파란색은 희망의 감정 등을 나타냈다. 이와 같이 고대 이집트의 색채와 문양이 태양신을 중심으로 한 응집력 있는 힘을 형상화하고 그 힘이 왕권유지를 위해 사용되었듯이, 영화 <클레오파트라>의 복식에서도 절대적인 왕권을 상징하기 위해 색채와 문양에 종교가 상징적으로 표현되었음을 알 수 있었다. 이상의 연구 결과를 가지고, 이집트 신들과 동일시되고자 했던 클레오파트라의 이미지를 새로운 버전의 복식 디자인으로 기획해 보았다. 위에서 살펴 본 클레오파트라의 성격과 이집트의 상징성 중에서 빨간색이 상징하는 열정적인 이미지와 이시스 신의 이미지, 검정이 상징하는 지적이고 당당한 이미지, 위엄과 자신감 있는 이미지, 녹색이 상징하는 사랑의 감정의 이미지, 터키즈가 상징하는 즐겁고 기쁜 감정의 이미지를 선택하였다. 이와 같은 클레오파트라의 성격과 이미지를 표현하기 위해, 작품의 구성은 검정을 전체적인 주조색으로 하고, Kemeto of Cleopatra(클레오파트라의 영토욕), Dignity of Cleopatra(클레오파트라의 위엄), Love of Cleopatra(클레오파트라의 사랑)을 컨셉으로 하여 총 3점의 무대 의상을 디자인하고 실제로 작품을 제작하였다. 본 연구는 엘리자베스 테일러 주연의 영화 <클레오파트라>에서 여주인공 클레오파트라의 복식에 관해 살펴봄으로써 클레오파트라 이미지, 고대 이집트 신왕국 시대의 복식, 당시의 색채와 문양의 상징성 등을 정리하여 이 컨텐츠를 패션 디자인을 위한 영감의 출처로 활용할 수 있게 하였다. 나아가 영화의상과 무대의상 디자인 연구의 방향을 제시하였다.
