Abstract
This thesis examines anti-Petrarchism in Elizabethan epyllions, especially in Marlowe's Hero and Leander and Venus and Adonis, and explores how anti-Petrarchism in these works can be interpreted as anti-establishment sentiments. Petrarchism together with Neo-Platonism was the most dominant ideology in the Elizabethan court, as Petrarchan sonnets were circulated by courtier poets with a political aim to seek favor with queen. Thus it can be said that anti-Petrarchism may imply anti-establishment attitude. In Hero and Leander and Venus and Adonis, anti-establishment sentiment is implicitly expressed through a negative portrayal of Queen Elizabeth. Epyllion, as a resistance literature, successfully satirized Petrarchism and laid the foundation of more free-spirited eroticism in the 17th century. Chapter II examines the relationship between Neo-Platonism and Petrarchism and explores how Elizabethan court circulated Petrarchan love and Neo-Platonism with a political calculation. Noting that epyllions were mostly written by young poets, this thesis suggests that there was certain antipathy among young writers toward the mainstream literature and Petrarchism. Epyllion writers may have created this genre to challenge the status enjoyed by the Petrarchan poets in the Elizabethan court. However, epyllion poets had an ambition to become a courtier poet; thus, Elizabethan epyllions failed to fully realize hostile attitude toward the authority, stopping at expressing only anti-Petrarchism. Chapter III explores the way Hero and Leander criticizes Petrarchism through the depiction of erotic love of two young lovers. The description of Hero and Leander seems similar to that of a Petrarchan lady and a lover, but the extremely exaggerated and awkward description seems to satirize the exaggeration in Petarchan metaphors. The love affair between Hero and Leander is described as physical actions rather than a spiritual love. Unlike Petrarchan love, the love of Hero and Leander is mutual and physical. Thus, Hero and Leander, represented as Petrarchan lovers at a first sight, are actually anti-Petrarchan characters. Hero, who looks like a Petrarchan lady, is in fact a flirt in the court. The setting of the poem Sestos is a place of chaos, governed by erotic desire and Venus. The description of Venus in the poem stands at the opposite side of the virgin queen of Love and Beauty in orderly England. The anti-Petrarchism in Hero and Leander thus suggests an anti-establishment sentiments. Chapter IV examines the relationship between Venus and Adonis, who are depicted as lovers and as enemies. In this poem, the conventional gender roles delineated in Petrarchan sonnets are reversed; Venus is masculinized while Adonis is feminized. Adonis assumes the role of a Petrarchn lady who worships Platonic love; he is a man lacking in sexual desire. And he remains silent in the first half of the poem, like a Petrarchan lady. On the other hand, Venus is presented as a Petrarchan male lover. She describes the beauty of Adonis and her love about him in Petrarchan terms. Her desire toward Adonis is expressed as a physical force. In this gender reversal, their love affair escalates into a power struggle, in which Venus wants to acquire her love while Adonis strives to resist. With the death of Adonis at the end, however, this struggle ends in vain. His death is a punishment for both Adonis and Venus for being Petrarchan.;본 논문은 말로우(Christopher Marlowe)의『히어로와 리앤더』(Hero and Leander)와 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare)의『비너스와 아도니스』(Venus and Adonis)를 통하여 에필리온(epyllion)이 궁정의 예술이자 당대의 주류문학이었던 페트라키즘(Petrarchism)에 대한 저항적 성격을 띠고 있다는 점을 밝히며, 아울러 이 반페트라키즘이 당시의 지배체제에 대한 반항으로 발전하는 과정을 살펴볼 것이다.
