1910년대 시조의 변화 양상과 그 의미

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to overview the resource used for Sijo (traditional korean poem) during 1910's and to study the position and contribution of 1910's Sijo to the entire history of Sijo by reviewing how 1910's Sijo was changed in term of contents and structure. This is done with overview of scale and pattern of 1910's poem, which has been relatively neglected in the history of Sijo study so far. Furthermore, the thesis examined major media published during 1910's to identity how the content and structure of Sijo was influenced as people who appreciate and/or manner of appreciation changes. We reviewed newspapers such as <Maeilsinbo> and magazines such as <Soneyon>, which were published in the beginning of 1910's through the latter half of 1910's. Chapter II investigates generally how the media addressed earlier were characterized, when the media was founded and published the first edition, who were editors of those media and what was mission of foundation for each media. We subsequently evaluated the characteristics of Sijo published thru the media and also characterized the respective media by looking at what kind of Sijo was published. We also study how each media was differentiated in terms of structure and content of published materials. This is done with by categorizing the Sijo into type of format and type of subject and evaluating how the feature of each type appeared in each media. Chapter III analyzes change of the formats and themes in Sijo in 1910's. The use of the change of lines and symbols are increased for easy to read. Sijo in 1910's existed between song for sing and literature for read. And also Sijo in 1910's shows change of the themes or idea compared with previous works, which represents a sign of the times. On the contrary, more than half shows expressed to a personal impression than the social criticism. Chapter IV looks into the changes of communication methods from sing to read literature based on the integration of contents discussed in chapter III. There were various changes in format of a Sijo. Many works tried to use change of lines, symbols and restore abbreviation of tribrach for easy to read. Theme of a Sijo was about personal life which emphasizes on tracing the root of human being. These reflect that the writer fitted in time changes. In this vein, the aspects of the changes in the Sijo in 1910's are meaningful in that Sijo develope naturally and change actively, reflecting the phases of the times. To described the history of Sijo in 1910's generally and minutely, the exact study on the history of Sijo is a problem to be solved in the future.;본고는 1910년대 시조 자료의 실상을 살피고 나아가 형식과 내용 면에서 변화 양상을 고찰하여 1910년대 시조의 시조사적인 위상을 밝히고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 그 동안 시조 연구사에서 홀대 받아 왔던 1910년대 시조 자료의 정확한 규모와 창작 양상을 살피고, 나아가 향유층이나 향유 방식의 변화가 시조의 형식과 내용에 어떠한 변화를 가져오게 되었는지를 1910년대 발간된 중요 매체를 중심으로 살폈다. 여기서 중요 매체로 활용한 매체들은 시조 자료가 게재된 분량이나 지속성을 중심으로 선정되었으며, 1910년대 초반부터 발간된 『매일신보』와 『소년』, 중반에 발간된 『청춘』, 그리고 비슷한 기간 창간된 『신문계』 마지막으로 1910년대 후반에 미국에서 발간된 『신한민보』가 그 매체들이다. 논의된 바를 각 장별로 정리하면, Ⅱ장에서는 앞서 제시된 매체들의 전반적인 성격과 특징, 각 매체가 발간되고 창간된 시기 등을 알아보고, 개별 매체마다 창간 목적과 편집진의 구성 현황, 게재된 시조들의 전반적인 성격을 정리하여 1910년대에 시조가 게재되어 있는 중요 매체들의 전체적인 특징과 함께 개별 매체의 개성적인 면모를 살펴보고자 했다. 또한 각 매체별로 형식적인 면과 내용적인 면에서 세부적인 특징이 어떻게 드러나고 있는가를 살폈는데, 이를 알아보기 위해 각 매체별로 형식별 시조 유형과 주제별 시조 유형을 분류하여 각각의 특징이 각 매체의 시조 자료에 어떠한 양상으로 나타나고 있는지에 관해 알아보았다. Ⅲ장에서는 형식적인 변화와 주제적인 변화가 1910년대 시조에 있어 어떠한 변화 양상을 보여주는가를 살핀다. 발생했을 때부터 창을 전제로 한 시조와 달리 읽는 것을 전제로 한 근대시 사이에서 근대의 시조는 그 중간 지점에 위치하며, 그러면서도 점차 시조 쪽에서 시 쪽으로 변화하는 양상을 보여준다. 1910년대 시조는 문장 부호를 사용하거나 행갈이가 보편적으로 인식되는 등 시조의 형식이 변화하면서 시적인 리듬감이 시각적으로 확보되어 나가며, 작가 표기나 개제 형태 등 작품 외적인 면에서도 점차 외형적인 형식을 존중하는 양상을 보인다. 이념과 가치관, 심지어는 향유 방식마저 달라진 1910년대에 창작된 시조들의 경우 그 이전의 시조와는 작품 내적으로도 확연히 달라진 양상을 보인다. 기존의 소재를 활용하면서도 기존과는 다른 새로운 의미를 부여하는 작품들이 나타나는 한편, 완전히 새로운 외국의 언어나 신문물을 주제나 소재로 사용함으로서 당대적 공감이나 흥미를 얻고자 한 시조들을 볼 수 있다. 또한 1910년대의 특수한 시대적 변화에 대응하여 특정한 목적을 지향하거나 지극히 개인적인 서정을 노래하는 방향으로 점차 시조의 주제가 전환되는 양상을 보인다. Ⅳ장에서는 Ⅲ장에서 연구한 1910년대 시조의 변화 양상을 종합하여 결과적으로 1910년대 시조가 각 대표 매체와 관련하여 노래 문화에서 시 문화로 소통방식에 변모가 나타난 양상을 살핀다. 18세기에서 19세기에 이르기까지 시조 창작에서 주도적인 역할을 하고 있었던 계층은 전문 가객이었으며, 그들은 주로 가집을 편찬함으로써 시조를 발표하였다. 그러나 신문 등의 대중 인쇄 매체의 발달로 인해 활자 중심의 시조로 변이되는 현상이 1900년대 초반에 급격하게 일어났다. 한정된 사람만이 볼 수 있었던 가집과는 달리 대중에의 접근성이 뛰어나다는 점에서 이들 매체는 급속도로 그 세력을 확장해 나가게 된다. 대중매체, 특히 신문의 등장은 시가사의 흐름을 ‘노래하고 듣는 것’에서 ‘읽는 것’으로 바꾸어 놓았다. 본래 화자와 청자의 관계 속에서는 즉각적으로 서로 소통할 수 있었던 시조 갈래는 작가가 특정한 매체를 통하여 독자에게 일방적으로 이야기하는 시 문화로 변화하였다. 이상의 논의를 통하여 본 연구는 그동안 홀대받아 온 1910년대의 시조 자료가 매체에 게재된 실상을 살피고, 개별 시조의 분석을 통하여 시대적 변화 양상을 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 시조는 한일 병합 조약이 맺어져 본래의 이념적 기반과 향유층을 잃어버린 1910년대 이후에도 꾸준히 창작되어 왔으며, 이전 시기의 시조를 그대로 답습한 것이나 일정 정도 변화를 시도하고 있는 시조, 상당한 변형을 거친 시조 등이 혼재되어 나타나는 등 시조의 전변을 예고하는 시발점으로서 흥미로운 양상을 보이고 있다. 또한 1910년대의 시조는 학술적으로 연구되고 의식적으로 부흥하고자 하기 전 단계로, 그 구체적인 양상을 살펴보았을 때 20세기 초의 변화하는 시대상에 대응하는 능동적인 형식적·내용적 변화 양상이 확인된다는 점에서 시조사적인 의의가 있다.
