Abstract

A master pedagogue, he also educated many young musicians from all over Europe and particularly from northern Germany. The Amsterdam Oude Kerk (Old Church), where Sweelinck once worked as an organist, was originally a member of the Roman Catholic Church but later converted to Calvinism circa 1580 as with the Protestant Reformation. Since the Protestant denomination banned the use of instruments during worship, the role of organ was not pivotal at that time. The municipal authorities, however, considered the instrument at the church one of the national properties and supported it with proper policies, allowing the musician to freely pursue his creative endeavors. The 17th century Netherlands was an epicenter of not only political and religious turmoils but also trade and commerce of northern Europe. Naturally, the country attracted musicians from all over the continent and they influenced Sweelinck to a significant degree. His compositions of fantasia, echo fantasia, toccata and variation show a virtuoso mix of various musical techniques of Britain, Spain, Italy and other countries as well as German melodics. Particularly in his variations, there are clear indications of the influence of English figural techniques and Spanish compositional structures. "Mein junges Leben hat ein End" of the Variations on Secular Tunes is an excellent example of characteristics of the period in question, consisting of six variations utilizing a German folk song as a central melodic theme. The piece masterfully shows the composer's unique eclectic style, a combination of his Dutch heritage of exquisite polyphony and the English virginalist technique, the Spanish differencia as well as the Italian toccata. The melodic theme of the composition appears in cantus planus or cantus coloratus for mostly soprano, showcasing, throughout the piece, a wide range of techniques such as juxtaposition, stretto, sequence and echo as well as the English figural technique. Not only that, Sweelinck transformed the simple monophony into a masterpiece with his own genius contrapuntal techniques. As reviewed above, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck invented his own idiosyncratic forms by combining traditional musical techniques of European countries with emphasis on the English virginalist school, rather than creating a completely new style of music. More importantly, the Dutch organist passed his musical tradition to his students from northern Germany who later expanded and developed it to the next level. As a composer, organist and educator, Sweelinck served as the pivotal link to the matrix of music of the Baroque era.
