박완서 소설의 자아실현욕망 연구

Abstract

Wan Seo Park is recognizing as a female author who shows criticalconceptions about reality through keyword such as 'women' and 'desire.' Also, she is recognized as both popularly and critically for many serialnovels and full length novels. Although Park doesn't reveal her desirethrough the work directly, she shows the desire which tries to overturn thereality for precise conception and description of reality. This study looks into the femininity and values that Wan Seo Park isfundamentally seeking based on female characters' desires and thecharacters which are developing utopias to maintain their fantasy. In the1970s and 80s, novels didn't escaped from the boundaries of modernity andthe routine world. Therefore, this study considers the process to developidentity and desire of characters for self-realization. Self-realization is notonly a fundamental human's desire but also the final goal to beacknowledged from other people. In this regard, this job to search thedesire of female characters is also meaningful. In chapter 2, this study looks into female subjects who have their owndesires based on awareness of male ideology. There exist isolated womenbecause of the demands of traditional values, and women who are willing toactively seek their own desires with the advent of the modern society. Thefemale characters' self-image of her works is revealed as too realistic orstruggling to overcome male ideology. In addition, this kind of feature isdemonstrated through the ambivalent attitude about the Father Law. In chapter 3, this study looks into female characters which violate theFather's law and interrupt to the Mother's law. These characters are verysimilar to Antigone who was willing to break the Domestic Relations Law. The reason why this study focused on not the relationship of the motherand the daughter but the relationship with father is that the female subjectwho is willing to violate the symbolic order has the tendency to bethreatened by the Mother's law and deny this rather than be identified withthe mother. After all, female characters accept positive ego in their mind,and create their own utopias. We can find strong willed female characters who accomplish in an idleworld through positive desire and identification for others. Their behaviorsseem to regress regarding to return to being 'self', but we can know thatthe fantasy which Wan Seo Park shows is not far away from reality throughhostility and pity for others, and the process of discovering self-identity. Despite the evaluation that her works leaned to autobiography, this studyagrees with the opinion that she is an author who can show the limitationsand alternatives for women and tries to scrutinize the meaning of herworks.;박완서는 여성 작가들 중에서도 현실에 대한 비판적 의식을 ‘여성’과 ‘욕망’이라는 키워드를 통해 잘 보여주는 작가로 인정받고 있다. 또한, 그는 수많은 단편과 장편의 작품들을 통해 대중성과 작품성을 동시에 인정받고 있는 작가이기도 하다. 비록 박완서는 작품들을 통해 직접적으로 욕망을 드러내지는 않지만, 치밀한 현실 인식과 묘사를 통해 현실을 전복하고자 하는 욕망을 잘 나타낸다. 박완서 문학에서 궁극적으로 지향하는 욕망은 주체가 이상세계를 마련함으로써 억압적이고 폭력적인 현실로부터 스스로를 보호하고, 현실과의 타협점을 찾아서 주체가 가진 한계를 극복한다는 것이다. 그 과정에서 끊임없이 현실에 편입하거나 저항하려는 주체의 의지가 나타나며, 결국 인간이 닿을 수 없는 심연이나 숭고미까지 동경하게 된다. 여기서 한 가지 주목할 점은 불가능한 영역을 꿈꾸는 주인공들이 현실 너머에 있는 세계를 동경하고, 이를 통해 비로소 자신의 욕망과 정체성을 깨닫게 된다는 것이다. 박완서는 작품 속에서 현실과 이상의 경계에 서 있는 인간의 한계와 모순을 잘 보여준다. 그리고 이러한 모순이야말로 그 당시 사람들이 가진 현실 인식에 어떠한 문제가 있으며, 어떠한 방식으로 왜곡되어 있는지 간접적으로 보여주는 역할을 한다. 본 논문은 박완서 작품들에 나타난 여성 인물들의 욕망을 중심으로 정체성을 형성해가는 과정과 자아실현 의지를 살펴봄으로써 박완서가 궁극적으로 추구하는 여성성 및 세계관이 무엇인지 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 흔히 전후 세대로 일컬어지는 1970ㆍ80년대 소설들은 근대성과 일상성이라는 범주에서 크게 벗어나지 못하고 있으며, 박완서에 대한 연구들도 대부분 이러한 범주 안에서 이루어지고 있다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 그동안 일상성으로 대표되어 온 박완서 소설들을 중심으로 자아실현을 향한 인물들의 욕망에 주목하고자 하였다. 자아실현은 인간의 근본적인 욕망 중 하나인 동시에 타인으로부터 인정을 받기 위한 최종적 목표라고 할 수 있다. 그런 점에서 여성 인물들의 자아실현을 향한 욕망을 밝혀내는 작업 또한 의미가 있을 것이다. Ⅱ장에서는 프로이트와 융의 이론을 중심으로 가부장적 이데올로기의 억압 아래 소외되는 여성 주체에 대해서 살펴보았다. 먼저 전통적 가치관의 요구로 인해 소외되는 여성이 존재하고, 근대사회의 등장과 함께 적극적으로 욕망을 달성하려는 여성이 존재한다. 박완서의 작품에서 여성의 이미지는 전반적으로 세속적이거나 남성 질서를 극복하기 위해 적극적으로 투쟁하는 모습으로 나타난다. 그리고 이러한 모습은 아버지 법에 대한 이중적 태도를 통해 좀 더 분명하게 드러난다. Ⅲ장에서는 아버지 법에 대한 환상을 중심으로 이를 위반하고 어머니의 세계에까지 개입하게 되는 여성 인물들에 대해서 살펴보았다. 친족법을 어기고 스스로 남성 혹은 여성이 되고자 했던 안티고네처럼 박완서 소설의 인물들 역시 이러한 이미지를 많이 닮아 있다. 이 장에서는 주로 라캉과 버틀러의 이론을 인용할 것이다. 본고에서 모녀 관계가 아니라, 아버지와의 관계에 더 주목한 이유는 상징 질서를 위반하려는 여성 주체는 어머니와 동일시되기보다는 가부장제를 대신하는 어머니의 질서에 위협을 느끼고 이를 거부하는 경향을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 결국 어머니와의 화해를 통해 자신의 내면에 있는 긍정적인 자아를 인정하게 되고, 거기서 한걸음 더 나아가 자신만의 유토피아를 창조하게 된다. 타자에 대한 절대적인 이해 없이는 주체의 존재 또한 불가능하다는 레비나스의 말처럼 박완서 소설의 인물들 역시 타자를 향한 적극적인 욕망 또는 동일시를 통해 이상세계를 이룩하려는 의지가 강하게 엿보인다. ‘자기’로 다시 돌아간다는 점에서 여성 인물들이 보여주는 행위는 퇴행적인 것처럼 보일 수도 있으나, 타자에 대한 적대감과 연민, 그리고 스스로의 연민을 통한 자아 찾기의 과정을 통해 박완서가 보여주는 욕망이 결코 현실과 동떨어진 것이 아니라는 사실을 잘 알 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 박완서가 자전적 글쓰기에 치중한 작가라는 기존의 평가에도 불구하고, 박완서야말로 여성으로서 가진 한계와 대안을 잘 보여줄 수 있는 작가라는 사실을 바탕으로 그 의의를 찾고자 하였다.
