레오노라 캐링턴(Leonora Carrington) 작품에 나타난 다문화적 특성 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영국 태생의 화가이자 작가인 레오노라 캐링턴(Leonora Carrington, 1917-)에 대한 연구이다. 캐링턴은 멕시코와 미국에서 오랫동안 살았고, 불어와 영어, 스페인어로 광범위하게 저작활동을 하였다. 영국인 아버지와 아일랜드인 어머니, 불어 가정교사와 이탈리아 프로렌스(Florence)에서의 수학 등은 이와 같은 저작 활동 및 작품 활동의 근간이 되고 있다. 말하자면 캐링턴은 유년기부터 이질적 문화들에 지속적으로 노출되었고, 여기에서 비롯된 다양한 문화의 관습을 기반으로 자신의 정신세계 및 작품세계를 형성해갔던 것이다. 다문화적 환경 속에서 성장한 캐링턴의 삶은 초현실주의와의 접촉을 통해 독특한 예술적 세계를 형성하게 된다. 1937년 파리에서 초현실주의자들과의 만남이 있던 초기부터 캐링턴은 초현실주의 운동에 참여하였고, 초현실주의 작가들로부터 많은 관심과 주목을 받는다. 앙드레 브르통(André Breton, 1896-1966)을 비롯한 남성 초현실주의 작가들은 그녀를 일컬어 팜므 앙팡(Femme Enfant)으로서 또한 뮤즈로서의 영감적 역할을 완벽하게 가진 존재라고 언급한다. 그러나 캐링턴은 이처럼 남성초현실주의 작가들이 부여한 팜므 앙팡이라는 테두리를 벗어나 자신이 다양하고도 왕성한 창작활동을 통해 독자적 정체성을 가진 예술가이기를 원하였다. 본 논문은 캐링턴의 이와 같은 면모에 근거하여 그녀의 작품에 나타난 다문화적 특성을 통해 그 작품의 본질을 규명함에 목표를 두고 있다. 이를 위해서 먼저 캐링턴 작품의 배경으로 작용한 다양한 삶의 이력들을 지리적 배경, 예술적 배경, 종교적 배경으로 분류하여 살펴보고 있다. 이 배경들에 대한 고찰은 그녀 작품의 일관된 특징들 즉 관습이나 이분법적 사고의 거부, 자유에의 지향과 같은 특징들을 이해함에 있어서 필수적이라고 할 수 있겠다. 실제로 그녀의 예술세계 및 정신세계는 유년기부터 노출된 다문화적인 환경과 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있다. 캐링턴 작품의 캘틱 문화와 멕시코 토착 신앙, 그리고 카톨릭, 유대교, 신비사상에서 비롯된 여신, 랍비, 혼종적 이미지 혹은 연금술적 이미지의 반복적인 차용은 이러한 점에서 이해될 수 있을 것이다. 또한 이와 같은 다문화의 경험은 그녀를 자연스럽게 다원적인 세계에 대한 인식과 전통적 관습에의 거부로 이끌어 가고 있다. 예를 들어 유대교 랍비의 모티프를 작품에 나타내지만 이를 희화화시켜 풍자적으로 표현한다든지, 남성 중심적 세계에 대한 거부의 의미로서 창조적 여성상을 끊임없이 작품 속에서 구현해내는 것은 바로 그로부터 비롯된 것이라 하겠다. 그러나 예술가로서의 캐링턴의 역량, 그리고 초현실주의 작가들로부터의 깊은 관심, 그녀의 작품에 대해 당대 화단 및 문단에서의 호평들에도 불구하고 캐링턴에 대한 연구는 의외로 깊게 이루어지고 있지 않다. 그녀에 대한 연구는 대부분 초현실주의 여성 작가들에 대한 연구들 속에 포함되어 진행되었거나, 이를 제외하면 대다수 간략한 논평들이다. 독립적 정체성을 지닌 예술가이기를 원하였던 캐링턴의 태도를 고려할 때 그녀의 예술적 특성에 대한 깊이 있는 몇 편의 연구가 아직 남과 여라는 이분법에 근거한 페미니즘의 측면에서 이루어지고 있다는 점은 매우 아이러니컬하다고 할 수 있다. 기존의 연구 태도를 벗어나 독립적 한 예술가로서 캐링턴의 삶과 예술을 조명하고자 하는 본 논문은 바로 자유와 통합의 세계를 지향했던 그녀의 삶과 예술에 대한 분석으로부터 비롯된 것이라고 할 수 있다.;This thesis researches about Leonora Carrington(1917-) who is painter and writer born in England. Carrington has lived in Mexico and United States for a long time, she wrote wide range of works in French, English and Spanish. Many writings and various art works are under influences of English father, Irish mother, French Tutor and study in Florence, etc. So to speak, Carrington has formed her thought and artworks through a variety of cultural custom which was from continuous exposure of different cultures. The career of Carrington who had grown up in multi cultural environment has been formed of unique art through contact with Surrealist. In 1937, Carrington attended at the Paris Surrealism from the beginning of Surrealist movement and many Surrealists gave their much interests and attention to her. Man Surrealism artists, including André Breton(1896-1966), mentioned Carrington is a perfect model of inspiring role as Femme Enfant and Muse. But Carrington wanted to be an artist of independent identification by her own various and energetic creative activity and made herself free from category of Femme Enfant. This thesis take aim at investigation of essence of her work through multi cultural characteristics in her works. For this aim, this thesis researches her diverse career of her life and works in aspects of geographical, artistic, religious background. Investigation about these backgrounds is essential to understanding of consistent characteristics, in other words, the reject of custom and dichotomy and pursuit of freedom. Actually Carrington's art and thought have an inseparable relation with consistent exposure of multi culture from childhood. Characteristics of her works such as borrowing from Goddess, Rabbi, half breed images and alchemical images from Celtic culture, Mexican native religion, Catholics, Judaism and Mystic Philosophy will be understood by this point. Experiences of these multi culture leads to Carrington's understanding about plural world and refusal to traditional custom. For example, she describes Rabbi motif in her painting satirically and embodies creative woman images repeatedly by meaning of the reject of man centered society. But in spite of her ability as an artists, deep interests from Surrealists, favorable notice from artists and the literary circles in those days researches about Leonora Carrington is not progressed. Most of researches about Carrington was progressed in studies about Woman Surrealist artists or otherwise short comments is majority of researches. Considering her attitude of being an artist who wants to be an independent identification, some of Carrington's researches which are still made in aspect of feminism based on dichotomy of man and woman is very ironical. The attitude of this thesis which is aimed to the investigation of Carrington's life and art as an independent artist comes from analysis of Carrington's life and art heading for freedom and unification.
