English Web Guide to Goyang City, Korea

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to provide travel information on Goyang City for foreign visitors and residents, and to create a well-designed English Website with plentiful information on the city. Goyang City, located near downtown Seoul, has been developed into a cultural center and its population, including foreign residents, has rapidly increased. However, Goyang City’s English Website is still not informative enough to inform foreign residents on Goyang’s features and places of interest and it needs to be improved from a design aspect as well. Therefore, this project aims to create a well-designed, high-content Web guide to Goyang City, which will contribute to increasing foreign residents’ wellbeing. This Web guide is accompanied by a theoretical paper, which discusses specific principles of Web design and Web writing for creating an attractive and effective website, provides an analysis of the existing Goyang English Website, and presents the design and results of a practical usability test that was applied to improve the new English Web Guide to Goyang City, Korea. Results of the usability testing showed that users are highly satisfied with both design and information of the new Web guide. The clear organization, neat page layout, familiar font styles, and aesthetic color coordination of the Web guide increased users’ understanding of and satisfaction with the Website. The in-depth information on places of interest added to the new Website was the most highly improved feature compared to the existing English Website based on measures of users’ satisfaction.;본 논문의 목적은 고양시에 거주하는 외국인이나 여행객에게 고양시의 주요 관광지와 특징을 알리기 위한 유용한 영문 웹사이트를 구축하고, 이를 통해 고양시의 많은 관광 자원을 홍보하는 것이다. 뉴스위크지에 세계 역동적으로 성장하는 10대 도시로 손꼽힌 고양시는 증가하는 인구와 함께 그 위한 또한 높아졌으나, 아직 그에 걸맞는 영문 웹사이트를 구축하지 못하였다. 따라서 본 논문의 목적은 고양시에 대한 전반적인 정보와 관광지를 중심으로 한 폭넓은 실용적인 정보를 외국인에게 알리는 것이다. 동시에 본 논문은 학구적인 연구와 더불어 실제 활용 가능한 영문 자료를 인터넷 상에 제공하기 위한 것이다. 본 논문에서는 웹사이트를 구축하는데 필요한 기본적인 웹 디자인과 웹 글쓰기의 이론을 논하고, 그 이론을 바탕으로 유용한 웹사이트를 구성하는 세세한 계획과 그 적용을 논한다. 또한, 유용성을 확인하기 위한 유용성 테스트의 방법과 그 결과의 적용을 통하여 어떻게 웹사이트를 향상시킬 수 있는지도 논하였다.
